I'm thinking the best thing to do is pull the spark plugs out a petrol or glow plugs / injectors out a diesel whatevers easier then crank the engine over until it sprays all the water back out without compressing it. Definitely don't park the car using the starter motor in gear or even try to restart the engine. Will insurance or warranty even cover those fools or are they about to get shafted by the stealership! Love how the Tesla ate that for breakfast. Everyone goes too fast! Need to crawl through it instead. Air intake is behind the grill unless the range rovers take in from back of bonnet. In Australia we fix a tarp across the front of the car to keep the water out of the engine bay . Helps keep your motor dry. It creates that nice bow wave protects your radiator. You take it off straight after you cross or it impedes air flow and your car overheats . But it does wonders for the crossing .

During my career as a mechanic I dismantled several engines that were wrecked due to hydraulic lock up. When water enters the combustion chamber on the compression stroke it has nowhere to go, and water cannot be compressed. When the piston reaches the top of it’s stroke it meets the uncompressible water, and the usual result is a broken piston and/or a bent con rod. It only takes an eggcup sized amount of water to enter the engine to destroy it.

Years ago, having fitted a cold air intake/induction kit I drove through a not very deep flood and proceeded to hoover it into my engine. @LMF50003 жыл бұрын
The air intake is typically right above the manufacturer's logo at the front of the car. If the water gets higher than about 1 inch above the logo, the car is going to swallow water. That's why it's essential to drive dead slow to avoid making a wave that pushes water up and over the intake. If the engine swallows water, with a petrol you might be able to maybe run it after it dries out but probably not. With a Diesel it's even more unlikely because the high compression means you'll bend a connecting rod if the engine tries to compress water. Honestly, the best car out of all of these is the Tesla because it doesn't intake anything to run. That thing will keep working probably even totally submerged if the seals around the electronics hold.

In this case there is literally a depth gauge and I think someone said it's at 2ft. My number 1 rule for water is never go dapper that half way up your tires MAX. Usually once you're above your hubs you're dangerously close to things like your transfer case, dif and tranny breathers. Then above that is usually your air intake tucked somewhere in the bumper. Hell my Celica routes the intake right to the front grill, right at the bottom so maybe 6" off the ground at most it's actually below my tranny breathers.

As so many have pointed out, water in the air intake is going to cause hydrolock, and most modern vehicles now have low level air intakes due to compact packaging requirements - but it's also interesting just how many petrol vehicles seem to be runners after the event, but running really badly due to damp looms and water surrounding the ignition coil modules.
@StrokeMahEgo3 жыл бұрын
There's often a drain to evacuate water from the air intake, provided you're not still underwater. I live in Louisiana where we have to deal with water in the roadways fairly often. Your really can't tell how deep the water is before you're in it and going around every little bit of water you see because you can't tell if it's 2 inches or 2 feet deep isn't practical at all. That said, 99 times out of 100 the police will barricade a roadway if its too deep to drive through so if you don't see a barricade like in this video, most people just go for it. The people that intentionally sneak around barricades and get stuck absolutely deserve it though lol

I especially love the part where they keep trying to start the car after its hydrolocked. Your cars valves also love that part

I have never seen so many people blow up so many engines in such a small stretch of road way. That's mind boggling. Every single one of those newer cars has at least 10k$ of damage.

Seriously!? Who in their right mind would do such a thing without an intake snorkel?
@TheSaintBigFoot2 жыл бұрын
Lol right? It's literally using the intake as a bucket. The second the start going up the other side it drowns the engine

i would drive through it in my mercedes sprinter, because it has the air intake on top of the engine, so about 4 foot from the ground.

@3DPeter2 жыл бұрын
@@porthmeor1 i know, but because my air intake is placed so high, i would dare to drive through. But then slowly so that no wave can fill up the engine compartment, because that's the biggest mistake alot of people make there.

Having driven a car through deep water, they are going too fast. You need to create a bow wake that stays in front and creates a lower water surface just in front.
@TheWhatman212 жыл бұрын
About to say this. On many occasions I've had to cross 4ft in my 2000 buick lesabre. Nice easy consistent slow speed and I dont even get water through the doors. The whole time watching the bow wake
@AndreFG2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if they crossed the flooding in reverse some cars would have survived, once the water goes above the hood (air duct) its over for the engine but in reverse the "wave" would be at the back of the car. Idk if the escape pressure can keep the water out, though
@Art_of_Ramon2 жыл бұрын
@@AndreFG I've never tried it, but it does sound like a good idea. The water level does appear lower at the rear end. I got my experience trying to get a flight out of Houston during a Hurricane. I made it to the airport, but unfortunately not enough the airport workers made it there and flights were cancelled. The only negative side effect, the starter was a little rusty trying to start it several days later. But, it did start and the vehicle had no issues.

Not only this, but you want traction when driving through water. You go fast you're likely to get swept away if the water is moving at all, which only increases the deeper the water. Not to mention with flooding that bad it could cause road erosion. I had to drive through water in a truck and I could feel pieces of the road breaking up under me
