The customers types will greatly influence these reliability ratings. Whats interesting is that VW is almost on par with Vauxhall now and the Cupra brand was made to complete directly with the like of Alfa. Seems like they went for the same reliability as well 😂

@tomyg2766 Software issues should be an easy fix for the dealer who must be really poor. I've noticed when putting my 2018 Mazda 2 for each service, my dealer has performed 'additional downloads' to software on each occasion. The car has been faultless and the small family Mazda dealer I use is excellent.

Most of them are in the 90% range which is good given the complexity of modern vehicles. The difference between makes is a fraction of a percent in many cases so you have to bear that in mind when looking at a list like this.

The German brands (VW/AUDI) were always praised for their reliability and they've been trading off of this for too long, as the Chinese enter the market they need to be wary they don't leapfrog them. The German brands do know how to make a nice door clunk but that's the same as putting lead weights in headphones to make them feel heavier and "more premium" people will see through it. I think in a recent survey Tesla is now the #1 brand when asked if they'd buy the same brand again.

I think you were quite lucky, the Zafiras seem to be really hit and miss, I've got a mate with one that is used as a beater and he can;t kiil it no matter how hard he tries. I know of plenty of others (Infact had one on a call the other day) who replaced almost an entire car and still got constant problems. There seems to be almost no middle ground with those cars which is really odd. Great things when you get a good one though.

I’ve owned 15 Land and Range Rovers since 1996, bar 1 ( a 2014 diesel Evoque that ate DPF O2 sensors every 10days ) they have all been used offroad a lot. In that time I’ve had 2 that needed unscheduled mechanical repairs - a 1999 Discovery 2 TD5 and after a long long gap with totally reliable cars I now have a Defender D250 90 - it was off the road for nearly a month over March and April with a knackered DPF. There has been a run on JLR DPF’s on the most recent Ingenium 6 cylinder diesel engines but to have no use of the car because there isn’t stock of replacements (the phrase used by the dealer is “they are in back order with the factory” my reading is that the supplier is waiting forJLR to pay outstanding bills before the manufacturer will give them any more stock). I have 2 friends who have had PHEV Defenders, Jaguars and RRS’s sat in the dealership workshops for 3 & 4 months with a heating fault that stops them using their cars. The most reliable long term owned Land Rover I’ve owned was the 1996 Defender TDi300 - owned for 21 of its 26 years by me and all that it needed outside of standard servicing was a new battery at 19 years old and a replacement chassis for one that dissolved with rust at 11 years old - sum total of repairs in 26 years! Not a single one of the Range Rovers and RRS’s or New Defenders have been kept outside of their warranty and my current Defender 90 is likely to be my last JLR product as they are just getting stupidly expensive to buy and there isn’t yet a sensibly priced electric or PHEV JLR product. I’ve owned 3 Mini’s since 2018 - a PHEV Countryman, an electric Mini Cooper S E and now a new style electric Countryman - 1 recall on the the PHEV’s “granny charger” to replace an sticky label on it and one on the Mini Cooper S E to fix a warning that the charge port door was open when it was visibly closed have been the sum total of non service items on my Mini’s - they are way way better assembled than any Range Rover at 2-3 times the price of the Minis that I have owned.

The 3rd generation mini is looking pretty reliable. Much more so than the 2nd generation. That makes the 2nd generation much better value used especially as a convertible. Couldnt justify nearly 5k more on a 3rd gen but if you've got the money then the 3rd gen is likely to give far less trouble. The engine to avoid in 2nd gen is the N14 prince engine. Lots went wrong with that. I've got the N18 which fixed a lot of the wrongs but is still a complex thing so you will get faults. For instance i get reduced performance light on due to a sticking vanos solenoid. Puts the car into 1.0 equivalent naturally aspirated performance mode once a fortnight or so! It'll still do 60. Turn off and on and all is well again. I've had 2 coil packs fail. Each time one can drive home fine but with a misfire if you put your foot down. Find a good specialist as ive done and repair costs are not too bad though. The most expensive cost has been new spark plugs! Which are long life ones. But when i ask for other stuff to be fixed like new vanos solenoids they tell me they rarely fail and can be cleaned out. My specialist is often telling me how to fix the car myself for a cheaper cost! Thats good service but i get them to do it anyhow as I'm not the most mechanically minded. 1st generation are pretty old now but more simple than 2nd generation so a good example might be ok.

Great video as always and very interesting results. I must admit I am impressed with Cupra’s current line up of cars so that was a bit of a shock. The only thing I would consider with this survey is that What Car only report % so if there is only a small return for one manufacturer a few bad ones can skew the results. My last Volvo lease only had one issue but several software issues which required a return to the dealer for each but now most software is fixed over the air.

Interesting to see how much Tesla has improved. I have a 2019 Model 3 built (or should I say thrown together) in California. Build quality was shocking (on collection one rear window 'closed' with a 1cm gap due to misalignment). That said, now that everything's been fixed (can't fault the service centre), I love the car. Had it 4.5 years and I'm looking to replace it. I test drove the refreshed Model 3 and loved how much improved it was. I'd have ordered one in a heartbeat if it wasn't for two things - the dangerous removal of the indicator stalks and Tesla's obsession with using the cameras to trigger the windscreen wipers instead of using tried-and-tested rain sensors. Genuinely have no idea what to go for next, other EVs all lack something compared to the Tesla, be it range, standard features or they have awful software. Guess I'll be extending the lease yet again until I make up my mind.

BMW has a great Mechanical reputation, couldn't fault them. But they have always been a joke when it came to electrics. Always a running joke when buying a second hand Beemer: 'It'll be easier to list the things that still work' I reckon the manufacturers that move toward fully EV will have lower and lower scores (Nissan being the perfect example) Whereas the ones that stick to Hybrids (Lexus, Honda and Toyota) will maintain the rep as the top brands. I also question the survey, are the way some of these brands are driven taken into account? Fiats and Minis are bought by people who barely do 2k miles a year, But Mercs, Beamers and Audis are doing 10k+ miles a year. More drivetime, more chance of things going wrong

What is the sample size - where cars from the same stable have very different ratings you have to ask how statistically significant those results are. Thank you for this. As a serial BMW owner, I am fairly happy, while they are not the best, they are in the top half, and certainly not as unreliable as the BMW hating gang would love everyone to think they are.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Absolutely ! I know there have been a very small number of BMW engines with some common faults (timing chain issues, rod bearings, etc), but in reality 95% of BMW engines are in fact, absolutely brilliant and reliable. Anything petrol and 6 cylinder has always been regarded as brilliant, and some engines have constantly been in the top 5 'best engines' lists for many years. The current 6 cylinder B58 is widely regarded as the best petrol engine on sale, very reliable, very strong, amazing low down torque yet revs to 7000, and very good efficiency too, it's the peak of ICE tech, and I doubt it will every be bettered as we move away from ICE to EV and possibly Hydrogen.

I agree, it’s the diesels that have been a bit of a let down, largely due to their “hopeful” oil change intervals which in reality just need to be shorter. I love a beemer personally.

I bet the majority of VAG reliability concerns were due to that awful buggy infotainment system and or the driver aids. So glad i have a golf 7.5 and not an 8! That said i do think they have lowered the quality a bit too recently. Audi plastics in some of the new cars are worse than their predecessor and if they're cheapening out then they might do it elsewhere too.

Yeah. They've put some of the controls back and upped the quality a bit. It does amaze me that manufacturers insist on trying to get rid of controls. Tesla with the indicator removal. I guess not an issue in USA because they have almost no roundabouts. But it would put me off buying it for using in UK

I mean I owned a 2nd hand mito for a couple of years and apart from DPF warnings, flickering lights on the heater controls and a piece of trim falling off it never broke down. It did nearly break my back though with rock hard seats and suspension so it had to go. I don't think they're miles behind but you may get a few niggles. Also I've kept track of cars I sold and the Alfa made it to 11 and 90k miles before being SORN. It failed a lot of MOTs and lots of advisories most times. Other brands I've had have made it to 14 and over 120k

I drove my first Alfa (2 ltr Alfetta) in 1979 but thereafter a long list of different company cars (BMW, Ford, Merc, Renault but no Alfas). Once I could choose my own car, it's been just Alfas and that's over 20 years. The cars are fine but they do need servicing. I ran my (much derided) 3 ltr 166 for 12 years and 120k miles with no problems apart from routine tyre/brake changes. I really loved that car! My Guiletta QV Linea was kept for 7 years (just a new battery needed) and it was then part exchanged for a Guilia. The Guilia is a fantastic car and I've had zero problems after two years. It's also very strange that the JD Powers (2023) Long Term Reliability survey placed Alfa third - above all other European brands. If there are any issues with Alfas, then it is the 'variable' quality of the dealership network. Get yourself a good Alfa dealer or workshop (talk to other Alfa owners) and life with your Alfa will be good. PS And why be surprised about this? My Guilia has a ZF Gearbox, Bosch electronics and many other parts common with so many other multinational brands these days. What others won't give you is the drive quality and the drop dead gorgeous looks! 🙂

@@VintageLynx you don't push the glass, you would push the boot, or pillars, and your fingers would be on the glass warming your fingers which then heats up your hands, as long as it isn't sub-zero temperature outside, which for a lot of cars from that era, then it killed the battery quicker trying to start a cold engine, since then technology has gotten better, and the climate hasn't been as bad as the early 80's for snow of 2 feet deep even in low laying area's.

@maff257

Perhaps sticking to what they know has meant reliability is better. Hybrids being the most reliable power train generally. Maybe the other legacy manufacturers rushing into electric cars, VW for example, meant they possibly let reliability slip elsewhere.

@@maff257I hardly think legacy auto have been been rushing into EVs. More like, dragged kicking and screaming away from their ICE vehicles which are their cash cow. They are all behind the curve of Tesla\BYD and Toyota especially so. Hybrid sales are strong now but that’s not going to last.
@maff257
@maff257 4 ай бұрын
@@crm114. VW by their own admission rushed development of the ID3 as they weren't really ready to move that quickly into EV's. Manufacturers have panicked to get EV's ready for the EU's requirement to sell set percentages of zero emissions vehicles to a timetable or risk fines. We are perhaps beginning to see early signs that some of these targets may be relaxed. EV's actually make sense for the driving that most people do everyday but convincing people is not easy and it has to make financial sense. Very few EV's are available or sold in the manufacturers home Japanese market so they have to look to source them from elsewhere like Honda with the Chinese built e:Ny1. Unfortunately some cars designed for China are not going to be as favourably received here, the e:Ny1 being a prime example. But with the EU rules currently in place what choice do they have.

Please stop getting at Angela Rayner and Starmer, the country needs them badly. Please hear me out before you go any further. We are desperately short of comedians in the U.K. right now. I know we have Allen Carr, Jimmy Carr and Ed Milliband, but to lose someone as funny as Chaplain, Benny Hill or Laurel and Hardy would be a major loss in these Woke times, she’s as good as Bernard Manning with a dress on. Together they are nearly as good as the Chuckle Brothers. They could be the face of the U.K. on the world stage in near future and making the world laugh with us Brits.
