I have the Design model, I do a round trip to and from work of 65 miles, my speed is set at 62 mph and my fuel consumption is an impressive 70 mpg +, I don't have to try hard to get those figures, last month I drove 1300 mile with my overall mpg of 86 mpg for the month, I'm impressed with the fuel economy, It's a fuel sipping car. This Prius will drive on full electric mode up to 80 mph before the engine kicks in. I've had 2 4th gen Prius and this 5th gen knocks the ball out of the park with the look's and drive ride now. Good review on the new Prius, Jim

You don't say how much of each journey is using electricity, if on 65 miles you use say 50 miles on electric power then to only get 70 mpg calculated over the full 65 miles means the 15 miles of petrol power is using a lot of petrol.

@@yanto63 I believe, the Design model is a match for an SE trim here in Canada. Both fine cars. Ours is a 24 edition. In summer temperatures we can reach very close to 100km in EV Mode and, that's not really "trying". Impressive. We've now driven the car for nine months and put 13,300km on it. We still have some of its just fourth tank of fuel onboard.

Great honest, thorough, real world review of a car. No rubbish about driving dynamics, torsional rigidity etc etc, just a review of what the car was built to do and how well it meets its brief. Great looking car too, yes there have bee some ugly duckling Prius over the years , however they were all very good cars

Toyota all the way. This is another good one. Having owned 2 cars with the previous 1.8 hybrid engine I moved up to the Rav4 plug in hybrid. Huge performance 306bhp but drive it sensibly you can return 70mpg + on longer journeys. Most I have had around town on battery alone is 62miles and 43miles at motorway speed. Glad the tech is moving to the Prius.

I’d love a PHEV Toyota Corolla Touring Sports as long as it had the same seats down boot space, length and flat loading. I could sacrifice a bit of under boot space and a side cubby hole for the extra battery. If the cross is identical dimensions but higher suspension, even better.

You may have figured out by now that while you were complaining about the lack of wireless charging your left hand was resting over the slot where phones go to wirelessly charge.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru 2 ай бұрын
Zero wireless charging in this one. If it was there it didn’t work. Sometimes press cars are preproduction but seems unlikely given that this is not a new car (just new to uk) - so it was either knackered or not there.
@briancorreia2923
@briancorreia2923 2 ай бұрын
@ Did you notice the thin slot underneath your hand in the center column near the shifter? That’s the wireless charging slot. I can see the slot on video but I can’t tell you if the charging function is equipped in your market on that trim. But the slot is there and it’s designed for your phone to go in on its side long edge first.

@ The North American market the lowest trim level has the slot but not the charging. It appears in your video that you were overlooking the slot all together. But it could also be that you were well aware of the phone slot and knew it didn’t change.

@ Didn’t you say there were two trims levels for the UK? I’d guess the one you filmed was the greater of the two based off the size of the infotainment screen and the wheels…It’s a silly thing for Toyota to skimp on. Sorry for misinterpreting your presentation.

Definitely the best looking prius so far!👍👌👏👏 The last generation was just plain odd looking IMO.👎😨😖😤☹️ Better in lighter colours that show off the lines of the car,👍 than the bland solid looking blue colour You've got on test.👎 With a big sloping rear window, it would've a lot easier & less techy just to fit a rear wash wipe rather than a digital rear camera.👎😖😤 With only a small boot, I can't see it being used as a taxi compared to previous versions, you'd have thought. But overall a good effort by Toyota on this one!👍👌👏👏

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Hi Jim, thank you for the honest review. We own a 2024 Prius Prime and your comment points match our experience with the vehicle. In respect to the colour(s), as brought-up by Rahmann936, we agree the lighter hues best compliment the design. At the ordering phase my wife fancied the red paint while I voted toward Guardian Grey. After an almost two year wait (for a red one), our dealer telephoned to say a Windchill Pearl was "looking for a home", come, have a gander. We did. We both felt our thoughts about how the red model "looked so good" upon ordering seep from our heads. The Pearl colour is the definitive one for us. Two days later we collected our new Prime. It took months before we noticed the car is not actually white. On a bright day, if you peer as close, as you can focus your eyes, close, you'll find the finish really is like a pearl. Regarding range: When I drive (which is 90% of our travels), we are able to reach 90+km in EV Mode. However, on numerous days, at that travel distance, there was still close to 10% SOC remaining. i.e., the battery would have carried us past 100km. Now nearing 12,000km on the OD. we have burned, precisely, three tanks of petrol. When my wife drives the results are less, sadly, but that's why she insisted on a red one.................

A lease is probably the best way to go if you fancy a new EV, as technology is progressing steadily, and things will no doubt have moved on quite a bit in 3 years, when most leases end.... Plus with leasing you won't take the full depreciation hit, the leasing company does...
@wintersun398

The so-called luxury tax is a big issue here. Excel gives you the things you need, but you have to accept the standard paint. Any other and you go over £40k. And it makes no difference if the dealer gives you a discount, or gives you the paint for “free”. The govt is only interested in the selling price prior to discount. I found this out on my car, and now I have a £600 tax bill each year despite being well below the £40k limit.

We've had our 24 Prime for close to ten months now. The A pillars.......... . I put it this way; you need to be an experienced driver as, some, left hand turns can be a challenge. However, no more so than the 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 work truck I drove. With that, between the tree-trunk sized pillar and the side-view mirror that's as big as a 70's portable TV, hard left turns were often "blind". With either vehicle (as it should be with any), you have to be aware of your surroundings. We love the car and it has been flawless. We're getting 100km on a charge, that's close to 25% over the stated range.

EPA in the states measure empty battery mpg and get low 50s which is low 60s for UK mpg. How well does it work as a short range EV, can it heat/cool without the engine coming on, can you preheat on cold mornings, can you use a decent amount of power without the engine? I looked at an older Prius PHEV and you couldn’t in that.

I found it great as EV only but only drove for 5/10 miles locally in EV only mode and it was great - I tend to use a PHEVs in Auto most of the time. For me the car should just work without becoming a project and for me this was good in that regard. It's been pretty mild here so perhaps better to ask the heating question to someone in the wilds of Canada or Sweden.

I did want to buy but be careful £600 for road tax until 2030 then go down to £180 no way even if you buy with discount price but original price is over £40000 unless you buy basic model with 17 inch alloy wheels or blue colour in this model which is under £40000

Can you DC charge it or is it AC only ? Thanks.

It will be AC only. Minimum on 3.6kW. Not sure if it has a 7kW on board charger

@wintersun398 That is disappointing as home charging is not an option for me.

@ I know doesn’t make it right though, and on this even if you bought one there’s nowhere to put it , no use as an uber lol

I agree but it’s the world in which we live. You get a can of tyre jollop these days in the vast majority of cars. It’s not designed for Uber anymore; they feel the Corolla fits that use way better.

Looks isn't everything at the cost of practicality, visibility and affordability which traditionally made the Prius a popular all rounder, a general dogsbody, old priuses were popular for doing a hefty trip to homebase, move furniture or full of 5 occupants snd their suitcases full to the airport; this new "sporty" Prius, hardly. If this is the best Toyota can do now and not back in 2015 then without question Toyota has squandered itself into irrelevance and uncompetitiveness, like VW they're settling for luxury brand status, they might as well made the new Prius a 3 door coupé. I'm more dismayed by the cynical bZ40, CHR and the unforgivable AygoX "microSUV". Toyota is deep in decline.

This is a brilliant car, as it the CHR.

 besides the point, they're a wider market trend going upmarket to salvage diminishing profits against inflation, hence the proliferation of crossover-SUVs. And I absolutely can't stand the new and old CHR, claustrophobic levels of outward visibility and too much reliance on SUV feel, posh niceties and giant alloys, etc. No question why traditional automakers and politicians fear mongering Chinese EVs. Hell, Toyota wasted over a decade dismissing EVs and betting the house in hydrogen.

Toyota in deep decline ?? Really 11m vehicles sold, stuck to their guns regarding electric only and are now reaping the benefits. VW/Audi closing factories, laying off workers, Nissan laying off 9,000 worldwide, Stellantis profits & revenue plunging as old models lying in dealers stocks, Ford model range in Europe is hopeless, culled every popular car model they sold, BMW can't make a performing brake system so can't sell particular models, I think I'd rather be in Toyota's shoes with a huge range of cars that obviously people are buying worldwide

Bland car and that colour is naff. Imagine standing washing that on your driveway on a Sunday. You'd be embarrassed telling your neighbour that was your new car. Toyota cars maybe reliable but they are as exciting as eating a can of cold rice.

Yes much better to be washing your German/French/Italian/British pride & joy on Sunday in preparation for it to make it's inevitable journey on the tow truck to the garage on Monday
