So for context, the Fallen were once a proud civilization. Advanced and blessed by the Traveller as humanity was. The Traveller fled when the forces of darkness came and nearly wiped The Fallen from existence. As they chased the Traveller to get it back, they lost themselves dividing up into groups called houses, almost like space pirates. The House Devils, House Kings, House Wolves, House Winter, House Judgement and more. The House of Wolves was the strongest and united the others to wipe out humanity after the Collapse and to reclaim the Traveller(they call it the Great Machine). The Awoken, (the Queen and her followers) stopped the House of Wolves from showing up to the great battle, known as the War of Six Fronts. After imprisoning the leader, House of Wolves bowed to the Awoken Queen and she was merciful. (Fallen houses have a cool hierarchy system.) However, Skolas, Kell of the House of Wolves escaped the prisons and the Wolves rebelled against the Awoken and slaughtered many of them. Hence why the ask the Guardians for help. The Fallen are actually called the Eliskni but after their collapse they were known as Fallen. Hope this helps. If im missing anything, im sure others will fill in. Also a Skiff is a Fallen ship.

@@ChristSaves984 I’m all fairness, it’s gotten a lot better. As someone who has play from Day 1, Destiny with the seasons and dlc in between, the story has gotten very linear and interesting and more so ingame. The seasons really make you feel like part of the arc

Also they can't make anything themselves any more. They automated everything, absolutely everything, and had the AI's in the floating spheres run everything. So they're like cave men that a space man hands out guns and drugs to.

19:06 If you don't know the "House of Wolves" are trying to use a Vex security system to erase Guardians from time. Thankfully the player is a veteran of the "Vault of Glass" raid. Which means the Guardian already knows how the traps work ;)

@@feralprocessor9853 Even then, it works outside of their technology locations. When the Vex erased Praydeth from existence, it worked outside the vault and everyone forgot who Praydeth was, until our mission into the Vault during the mission Paradox and suddenly we realized he existed.

also 10:53 Petra "earned" her post as the Queen's Wrath when her previous Wrath, a woman named Sjur Eido was killed. Sjur and the Queen were in love and her death devastated Queen Mara, and Mara did not want to choose another Wrath, so Petra was appointed in a very sad way.

Ah Variks! Hes definately one of my favourite characters in Destiny! Hes an interesting character, who cares a lot for his people. His biggest thing is to hope that Fallen (or the eliksni, the actual name of the race) could live peacefully, even if he at times is willing to be harsh. In Destiny 2 he gets more storystuff and I would love to give the old spacecrab a hug. Seeing the fall of your race aint easy and Variks sure has seen the worst of it.

Petra Venj is a very interesting character. One of the seven Paladins of Awoken military she was demoted and sent as emissary to the Guardians in the Tower because in her first encounter with two Guardian fire teams she bombed their target site, not even their ghosts could survive that. After all, none would be stupid enough to run head on to enemy fortress and fight all over the place with no strategy, only skill and overpowered weapons, right? Except that is exactly how Guardians operate, since they reanimate, they go after hardest targets first and mow down the weak ones, they do not bombard the area with bombers and artillery and shoot from distance and slowly advance from cover to cover as regular military does. So as a result of her not understanding Guardians she killed six of them and their ghosts and it froze relations between The Tower and The City on one side and The Reef on the other for centuries, until this expansion came about and Guardians were allowed into Reef and trade began between them. Reef cryptarchs still consider Tower Cryptarchs to be ignorant scavenging opportunists, and Petra is still weirded out by how unquestioning Guardians are of their own existence and powers, but relations are getting better slowly. She eventually gets her rank of Paladin back, even as she remains stationed in the Tower and goes on missions with some Guardians, even becomes friendly with some of them like Cayde-6.

During that Silent Fang fight, they cut one of my favorite lines of dialogue from Variks. [Silent Fang Captain shouts something at the guardian] "He just called you a... well... it was an insult..."

The awoken are the crew (and their descendants) of a human colony ship that tried to escape earth during the collapse. As light and dark collided their ship was caught at the point of impact and when the violent clash caused a micro-singularity (a mini black hole) their ship was sucked in. Mara was the first to be pulled in but somehow was able to will a safe haven into existence within the black hole. When uldren and the rest of the crew were pulled into the singularity moments later they arrived in a paradise, and found that the clash of light and dark had changed their bodies into the awoken. Time moved differently in "the distributary", as they called it, so the new awoken society was able to advance for thousands or millions of years in total safety, while in our own universe only a few years passed. Then, for some really long and convoluted reasons, Mara and a large portion of the awoken left the distributary and returned to our system. Then another group split off from hers and went to live among humans. As a result of their origin, the awoken naturally have their own type of "magic" which is completely unique to them. Most awoken can't do very much with it beyond simple parlor tricks, but Mara and her coven of Techeuns (essentially witches) can use them to destructive effect. In combat Mara can conjure weapons known as Harbingers, basically black holes she can launch and direct at enemy armies or fleets. Petra's title is "queen's wrath" which is kind of like being her right hand. She leads Mara's personal guard, marshals the larger awoken army in wartime, and just generally does whatever the queen needs her to do. She gets along with Cayde-6 and occasionally collaborates with him on assignments. Uldren is the queen's brother and her left hand, acting as chief scout and spymaster. He has a strong dislike for all guardians and is extremely loyal to his sister.

Fallen is already a derogatory name for them. They earned that name from a couple centuries of pillaging, raiding, murdering, burning London to the ground, repeatedly attacking the city, eating children.... no, that's not a joke. There used to be countless cities and thousands of small settlements all over the solar system, slowly rebuilding human civilization after the collapse. They're all dead and gone now, the Last City isn't just a name, it's a very literal title. It's because of the Fallen's actions that only the Last City remains and why it's walls are so colossal.

Skiff is what you call their smaller crew ships. The massive ones are called a Ketch. The only derogatory name for the Fallen is well... Fallen. Thats the name the humans gave them, their actual species name is Eliksni. Queen Mara is Queen because she is the first and most powerful of the Awoken. You guys should also look up raid footage from the King's Fall raid and watch it after the main campaign of Taken King. You'll love it I promise.

The Battle of Twilight Gap Petra and Variks mentions was one of the largest battles in Destiny, with all the Fallen houses uniting to reclaim the Traveler (The Great Machine they call it), and it was one of the closest moments to losing the Last City (it was just shy of the city's borders, you can go to that location in game). It was basically the Helm's Deep of Destiny, with Mara Sov being like Gandalf and using Awoken magic to destroy the House of Wolves before they got out of the astroid belt to join the fight and made them serve her and her people. And the rocket you see get used here briefly is an Exotic weapon called Gjallarhorn, which in lore was forged with the armor of fallen Guardians from Twilight Gap to honor their legacy, and even carries their Light still. In game, it was the most OP weapon to use for Year 1 of the game before it got nerfed a bit lol

A lot of people have already explained the greater overall context of the House of Wolves, but where I see a lot of people get confused is how Skolas escaped in the first place. The first time Skolas was imprisoned, Mara Sov gave him to the Nine, a collection of dark matter entities, as a gift in order to placate them after the Awoken intruded in their territory. However, Xur, one of the Nine's emissaries to the real world, freed Skolas from his cell, though it's unclear if Xur did this of his own volition or at the command of one of the Nine. After Skolas was recaptured, he was returned to the Prison of Elders, where he would face a trial by combat at the hands of the Guardians, and would ultimately be executed. Before his death, however, Skolas began rambling about a "dark force" encroaching on the solar system, which is how Mara learned about Oryx's approach. This is when she began to develop her plan to confront Oryx and stop him from pushing too deep into the system, although I don't think she was expecting Oryx to have a superweapon at his disposal.

This was a pretty fun dlc. On the patrol areas they updated it, so a small group from house of wolves would wander around and you could hunt them down. Then a small boss would spawn that you had to take down. Also the introduction of prison of elders, so fun and challenging

For some context, the Kell of Kell comes from a prophecy from the House of Rains. Basically it's the Fallen version of the Messiah, a great uniter. Also, Variks has a grudge against Skolas because he cut off Variks' arms, the top ones that don't grow back. It was the last straw for Variks and was the reason he switched to the Queen's side.

Despite being one of the short filler expansions before we got the big Taken King expansion this one still has a place in my heart if nothing else because we got a opportunity to get the Awoken ship from vanilla D1 story for our own. Now I may be wrong in saying this. But Bungie may have had the "it" designation come from Mara because we can play as either male or female guardians so it was easier to have her say that than two different lines for the genders for coding ease and such. Also lest we forget that we are for all intents and purposes living corpses so being called "it" wouldn't be too far off on that as well.

Funny that you compared him to Dothraki. The Fallen did once have their own version of Game of Thrones. They had their own "houses" like GoT. They were all peaceful on their homeworld, but when the Traveler left during their own collapse, they fell wound up fighting each other. There were quite a bit of them, but were all destroyed by Saint-14 during his crusade against them. There's currently 3 houses: Dusk, Light, and Salvation. There were 9 previous houses as well: Devils, Exile, Judgement, Kings, Rain, Scar, Stone, Winter, and Wolves. Then there is also the Houseless, Spider's Crime Syndicate, "The Kells Scourge", and the Scorn.

I don't think there is as much story in it, but I was hoping you would react to the Crotas End raid. 6 guardians must go down into the pit and infiltrate Crotas throne world giving him a final death. This raid is the climax and ending to The Dark Below, it will also give more context to the next expansion The Taken King.

Loving the Destiny vids still, ill say this now, and will continue to say but hopefully when you guys do get into Destiny 2 that hopefully some of the seasonal gameplay is shown. I can't comment about the early D2 seasons (i had taken a hiatus from the game) but i do know that the seasons in between the expansions of D2 contained story elements (more so after shadowkeep i think?) so it would be good for you guys to be able to get that context as some of the seasons have good story elements or even tie into the next expansion etc.

I like House of Wolves better than Dark Below for a few reasons. It has a larger cast of characters that are more colorful and engaging (I adore Eris now but she was pretty one-note at the start), as well as more missions and more intrigue in its story. You definitely feel like a bounty hunter during it and it’s cool. It also does a much better job of giving the story relevant details than Dark Below did. That said, there’s still some neat lore so I’ll do my best to summarize it and not get too wordy. As others have stated, the Traveler previously blessed the Eliksni people with a golden age, but when the Darkness followed it to their worlds, it fled and abandoned them. Many Eliksni pursued it in great fleets and after an unknown length of time, arrived in our system to see it resting above Earth. They were enraged that Humanity had “stolen” their Great Machine, as they call it, and were more or less immediately hostile. We took to calling them the Fallen. The Fallen besieged the last city for many years with a few notable battles. The first was the Battle of the Six Fronts where the House of Devils attacked six entrances to the city and were handily repelled. Their failure inspired the other Fallen houses, usually territorial and at odds, to put aside their feuds and assault the City together. This battle wojld be known as the Battle of the Twilight Gap and the city very nearly fell. The House of Wolves was the last Fallen house to enter the system, planning on entering the battle to turn the tide. Their massive fleet stopped at Ceres in the asteroid belt to refuel and this is when Mara Sov decided to interfere. She deployed super weapons called the Harbingers to wipe out half of their fleet, kill their Kell (basically the leader of a house) and blow up the entire dwarf planet. Afterwards, the event known as the Reef Wars began. A brutal succession war between multiple factions of would-be kells and the Awoken. Mara Sov won, claiming the remaining Wolves as her own. Those that did not bend the knee were locked away in the Prison of Elders. Until a certain Skolas escapes, but you know the rest of the story. Okay I guess that was still pretty wordy. Something for me to work on haha

I saw that puzzled look of yours when they brought up the Nine. I think it's fine if I spoil it a bit, since I do believe you wouldn't find out what they are in game youd have to look up their grimoire or outside the game. The Nine are basically gods. well direct quote from them is "WE ARE THE SHADOWS OF YOUR WORLDS' MASS."- The Nine. Before the vex, before the Traveler and the Darkness, they were the biggest and baddest thing in the solar system.

If you are wondering why Ghost has been quiet since the main game, this was still during the Peter Dinklage days. I'd say it was a good thing he was replaced so we could hear Ghost more often. They had six different voices for the player, so it's a bit understandable that they wanted to minimize the player dialogue. It's not until way later, way after Destiny 2 launched and many of it's expansions, that they decided to cut the voices to just two. After that the player has been speaking more, but is still very much the strong and silent type.

I feel like a lot of Destiny 1 players, including myself, have a much greater appreciation of Variks than of Petra. Due mostly to the fact that there was a game mode created in the House of Wolves DLC called the Prison of Elders, which was based on killing waves of enemies in different rooms, with different types of enemies, in order to win loot and valuable prizes. Variks was the announcer of the challenges in Prison of Elders, and it was always fun listening to his voice. He's in D2 as well, however so far he's played more of a story role like Petra did, and so is not seen as much as before.

A skiff is just what one of their small troop ships is called. If you want a derogatory term for the fallen just keep calling them the fallen. The species actual name is Eliksni. Fallen is a slur given to them when they reached earths solar system to make fun of them for having a collapsed society. Later on in destiny 2 you make some more Allie’s among the Eliksni and learn not only that they aren’t called fallen, but that they actively dislike being called fallen. They just never spoke up about it because they were kind of at war with humanity and so demeaning each other was to be expected.

"Petra is awesome" She is my favorite female character in the universe. I would talk more about her but that would quickly devolve into me swooning about her to no end Skiff is the name of the little ship Skolas escaped with. The derogatory term for the Fallen is "Fallen". Their actual name is "Eliksni". The name "Fallen" refers to their fall from grace Be kind to Variks. He said that not begrudgingly it is just his accent but if you wanna go with him saying it begrudgingly it actually has a reason. He is the last of a noble house of Eliksni and now serves the people who wish to kill his people. He is specifically trying to broker peace between the Eliksni and the Guardians hence the "not all the Fallen are bad yes?" Meanwhile the other Eliksni see him as a coward who bowed to their enemies. Don't call him palpatine T-T Also not all the members of House Wolves are evil. In Destiny 2 you meet a former House Wolves Captain who sees that Guardians aren't their enemy. You also get more of the tragic story of Variks (yes it gets tragic). The Queen's Wrath is only the Queen's right hand woman. The Queen is not just someone that needs to be impressed and a good leader. She is just that full of herself. She is smart, she is powerful but her hubris fails her a few times in the future Petra is great. I would die for her and I detest Mara Sov for what she makes Petra go through in destiny 2 as well as a character called "The Crow"...she sees him as a tool and never saw him as anything else

I do want to point out there is still more story missing from these videos in the form of the strikes. While not super important some of the strikes have consequences for later. Example of one is the strike from this dlc called The Shadow Thief. Strikes were missions given out by the Vanguard for important tasks such as important targets or just general helping out with things. The Shadow Thief followed us heading into the Hellmouth on the Moon looking for a certain important Fallen target by the name of Taniks the Scared. It starts out with a message from Variks saying (Taniks has no House. He kneels before no banner, owes allegiance to no Kell. He is a murderer, and very good at what he does. I have been tracking him since Wolves broke their chains, yes? Now Taniks works for Wolf pack… but not for long.). These strikes add importance to events later on in the game and in destiny 2 and also add importance to lore pieces but some times end up resolved within these strikes. Example of that is Cayde 6 has history with Taniks. You see Taniks has fought many a guardian and has been killed a few times. However he is now more machine than Fallen. He now comes back as much as he needs to thanks to Fallen tech but can only do so with help of those that follow him. Cayde is involved with whats known as the vanguard dare. You see Hunters have a dare they do. They issue it with each other and can range from simple to very hard things. Before Cayde was Hunter Vanguard he took a dare that involved Taniks. The dare was whoever killed Taniks first becomes the next Hunter Vangaurd. Well no Hunter wants to be Vanguard though so this dare is very important. This dare is between the current Hunter Vanguard and Cayde and as you can guess Cayde wins the dare. However Taniks returns and kills Andel Brask the previous Hunter Vanguard. More on Taniks later

When Master Ives says "I hope not to disappoint you, too much" he's referencing an issue in vanilla Destiny 1 where when you decrypted high rarity loot drops into gear, he'd give you much worse gear than the item you gave him (say, you give him a Legendary, and he returns an Uncommon). For some reason, the probabilities in the loot pool weren't tied to the actual rarity of the drop, so you could get just about any rarity drop from what you gave him, and a lot of times it was worse. Plus he vaguely looks and sounds like Squidward, so no one likes Master Rahool.

Once I did kill the Demon of the Great Disaster, Crota Son of Oryx and got splashed by his blood, which tasted like Diet Mountain Dew for some reason. Seriously though, I got my favorite Ship in the entirety of Destiny between 1 and 2, the Hildian Seeker that is the same ship model the awoken fly after killing Skolas and the Queens Web Shader that has a glow in the dark effect with plate armor. Plus that gun seen near the beginning of the Campaign is the Grasp of Malok and that one never left my side when I had mine.

Even though he comes across as clever in the dialogue, Variks is even smarter than he seems. The broken English dialect he speaks in is a front to make it seem like he is less intelligent so that he seems like he could be less of a threat. There’s a moment in Destiny 2 when he gets incredibly angry at a character, and as he shouts at them he speaks fluently because he is so overcome with emotion that he doesn’t think to keep up his lie.

@@supercato9613 not really. I suppose he sounds a little less like he did in D1 in general, but if you listen to his dialogue when he’s yelling at Eramis near the end of the campaign compared to any other point there’s a definite difference.

I forgot how bad the stories were in Destiny 1, when it released. Thankfully the game became so much better when The Taken King released, when He arrived to our solar system to avenge the death of His son Crota.

Mmm Destiny, it starts to get good at the Taken King but kind of drops off until around Shadowkeep. It's a good story, just wasn't told very well in game. It was more like a book with pages you had to find. From Shadowkeep on though, the in-game story-telling gets much better.

I fell asleep listening to the awful dialogue exposition dumps this game has and the gameplay is so generic. Bungie really dropped the ball on this game, its a shame too because the world is artistically stunning, and the soundtrack is top grade. Raids are fun with friends. The story is god awful and confusing. the only people who still play destiny are people who love grind and loot drops from raids and maybe some strikes. If you want a game to get invested into the story destiny and destiny 2 are not the games your looking for. There are so many more better sci fi fiction games out there with a wayy better more cohesive story. halo, starcraft, dead space, killzone, doom, mass effect ect just to name a few
