The amulet that Pike wears is the holy symbol for her goddess "The Everlight" (The goddess's real name won't come up in the series due to copywright issues so for the purposes of the series the goddess will be The Everlight). 2:32 & 7:58 There's a meta joke/easter egg here: The coat & weapons-check half-elf is drawn in the likeness of Matt Mercer, the party's Dungeon Master in the original streamed campaign. Matt also appears as the guy Scanlan peed on by the bulletin board in the first episode. (He voices a bunch of characters through the series, including Trinket and Sylas Briarwood, but the visual cameos tend to involve his character having a Bad Day due to Vox Machina.) 14:40 Pike/Pickle's deity is the Everlight. Also known as Sarenrae, but that's a copyrighted name. (See also: Changing the safeword from Jenga to "Chenga") 16:00 "Now your soul is forfeit" is one of many legendary improvised lines by Taliesin Jaffe (Percy) from the original streamed D&D campaign. We Critters (Critical Role fans) have lots of "HE SAID THE THING!!" moments throughout the show. Two big ones so far were Grog's "I would like to RAGE" (what the player, Travis Willingham, always said when he wanted to use this game mechanic) and this Percy line. We like to call him *No Mercy Percy* when he acts the way you saw at the end of this episode. :) Great discussion & speculation at the end. I don't always watch those, but am very much enjoying your takes on the show. Oh, and please enjoy this short clip of Scanlan's originator/player/VA performing That Song. Also shows Matt Mercer. The first two episodes were mostly an intro, compressing the two years of their home game from before they started streaming. This is where the on-screen story begins, where they can start taking their time. In the actual game, the big battle with the Briarwoods went a little differently (for a few reasons), but Vax did almost die. Reason for the Dragon to be "over" so quick: When Critical role wanted to make their first Campaign into a cartoon, and started a Kickstarter campaign, they wanted a "pilot" something that hadn't previousely been shown in on video before. as the Kickstarter grew larger than they anticipated, the pilot grew into a 2 parter. I, as one who found Critical role 3 years ago knew about the story of Brimscythe/"General Krieg" from what is called the "pre stream" era, as the campaign of Vox Machina was a home run game before Critical Role started Streaming on Twitch. Everything after those two first episodes however is based on the games streamed live. It's pretty amazing how great the story is considering it's based (with a lot of trunkation of course) on the improvised sessions of D&D from years back. if you want to see for yourselves consider watching the streams! I know hundreds of 3-4 hour episodes can seem daunting, but they are quite literally some of the greatest entertainment I've had.

Percy's mask isn't so much a raven as a literal plague doctor mask. In the campaign, he would use it to try to protect against gaseous attacks and traps. As others here have pointed out, the Raven Queen is one of the deities of this world's pantheon (called the Matron of Ravens or Duskmaven here due to copyright). The raven in the intro is a nod to her, and the golden light is the thread of fate, which is one of her domains (along with the transition from life to death)

Welcome, new Critters Ken and Bethany! New viewer and subscriber, catching up on all the TLoVM reactions I missed last year, in anticipation of Season 2 next month. Just hopped in to say how delighted I am at Ken's savvy predictions, and Bethany's deep knowledge of mythological lore! Not many people noted the crow/raven appearance of Percy's shadow, and she's right about the importance of crows and ravens in mythology. Crows would often teem in the sky over battlefields, waiting for corpses: They were ill-favored harbingers of doom ("Gandalf Stormcrow," said Grima Wormtongue in LotR). In Irish mythology, the Morrigan (or Morrigu) is the goddess of war, fate, foretelling doom, death or victory in battle: Often appearing as a crow, the badb. She incites warriors to battle and can help bring about victory over their enemies. Different from ravens, even though they're also associated as guides and messengers. In Norse mythology, Odin (the Raven God) is accompanied by two ravens, Hugin and Mugin (Thought and Memory). Like any good storyteller, writer Matthew Mercer draws heavily from mythological lore, modern media, and often tweaks existing monsters from the Dungeon and Dragons game into his own "home-brewed" original creations: Something a good Dungeon Master does to keep experienced players, familiar with game monsters, on their toes with something new and horrifying.

4:08 -- That's Simon the one-eyed trouser snake. Vax has 2 belts -- one turns into Simon; the other is responsible for his daggers returning back to his hand after he throws them. Percy's main power is usually just his inventor's (Batman-level) intellect. His smoky "power" will be explained in time. Most of their "powers" in the game were just the spells they learned to throw as they gained experience. They're going to show Scanlan "learning" one of his spells in a later episode to make it digestible for those who don't play D&D. They have a decent fight scene in every episode. It's a plague doctor mask -- they wore them in the middle ages in hopes of keeping one safe from the Black Plague. They didn't understand disease yet; they put herbs and flowers or other wierd-smelling stuff into the beak in the hopes of keeping away the "bad air".

@trollnystan2 жыл бұрын
As far as Percy is concerned, his "special power" is really his intelligence and his guns, as he is the inventor of them in this universe. There's a little more to it than that, but as far as magic goes he doesn't really have any. Here's a breakdown of races, subclasses and classes for them (as far as where they currently are in the show): Grog - goliath, (called half-giant in the show due to copyright) Beserker Barbarian - basically the tank of the party who can also deal a lot of damage. Keyleth - half-elf, Circle of the Moon Druid - draws her magic from nature and can shift into animals (and perhaps other things later on). Druids are versatile and can double as a tank and/or melee damage dealer in certain animal forms. Percy - human, Gunslinger Fighter - his guns pack a punch but occasionally jam or break or misfire midcombat. The class gives no magical powers, but there are other ways to get them. Pike - gnome, Life Domain Cleric - main healer of the group, drawing her power from her goddess Everlight, she is also very effective against undead. Oh and she can eff ish UP. Scanlan - gnome, College of Lore Bard - he deals in illusions and charm through the power of music but can also do some damage and support his team mates with buffs. Vax'ildan - half-elf, Assassin Rogue - if he can get the drop on someone he can deal a ton of damage. Has no magic per se, but has plenty of magical items; the snake belt and the belt that lets his daggers return to him after he throws them for example. Vex´'ahlia - half-elf, Beast Master Ranger - clever with a bow and has a animal companion, in this case Trinket. In DnD has magic but the show doesn't show that much if at all. Also has a preferred enemy (dragons in her case) and preferred terrain, giving her advantages in those circumstances. Though this class (and this particular subclass) gets a lot of crap in DnD circles, Vex does a lot for the group in both damage and a support role. Pity animal companions are nerfed though, Trinket's the best!

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 one thing with Keyleth is that Druids in 5e are probably one of, if not the, strongest class. But a lot of that comes from picking the right spells at the right time. Marisha, who played/portrayed Keyleth, had a habit of accidentally using the wrong spell at the wrong time, leading to MANY hilarious situations. They've been showing this through the show is a variety of ways, such as her striking the dragon with lightning, awesome spell against almost any target except that kind of dragon. @DefinitelyNotDefinitive22 жыл бұрын
We’ve filmed most of our reactions other than the last two episodes. But we do catch the raven in the intro later 😜😁

The reaction of the rest of Vox Machina in the cartoon is pretty close to the the reaction of the players in the live stream when Percy/Talisin did that. Including the line "Your soul is forfeit!" There's a couple more lines like that in the show that you haven't gotten to yet.

Love that these are some real lines from actual campaign gameplay 😀

A brief run down on DnD magic. To perform magic spells, you may need to fufill some requirements. SOme spells need a hand gesture, some need words and some need actual materials (gold dust, caterpillar coocoon, etc.). You can circumvent the need to carry a large BS pouch full of weird junk if you use a focus. That is why Keyleth has a staff. Clerics can use a symbol of their god while bards can use an instrument. That's why the cracked symbol should be seen as a bad sign.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 one more thing. There really isn't an in game mechanic for neutering your players. So Pike could really just stop by Wallmart and get a new symbol if she doesn't care about DnD roleplay. It's clear that they are going for the more narratively rich route. Rather than being rule lawyers in this adapted series
@unicyclist972 жыл бұрын
You got really close to the reason for Keyleth's hesitance to cast spells. I don't know whether that event will be referenced in the show but it was regularly brought up in the live stream.

Keyleth (the green elf girl) is... complicated. Marisha Ray, her player, created her backstory to be a coming of age story because she straight up loves them. She is essentially royalty in training, and as part of a cultural right of passage, she is sent out into the world looking for the villages of her people, the Ashari. She is living with the future of her people on her shoulders and lived a very sheltered life up until recently, and this understandably makes her the way she is. And don't worry, none of this is spoilers for the animated series yet.
@DefinitelyNotDefinitive22 жыл бұрын
😎👍🙂 We come up with a different backstory for her that you will see later (we like to film most of these before releasing them because not everyone is cool about not spoiling things) So when you see us say things that have already been explained it’s because we hadn’t read these helpful comments yet 🙂

This is something to keep on the back burner for after the season is done probably but Critical Role put out a series of 6 videos (before the show came out) going into the background and making of this show called The Legend of (blank) of The Legend of Vox Machina, in order it goes; The Legend of The Story The Legend of The World The Legend of The Design The Legend of The Voices The Legend of The Music & The Legend of The Cast I highly recommend checking them out to gain some insight into Critical Role and TLOVM that I'm sure you would very much enjoy having.

That eyepatched pants-snake is "Simon" a loyal item ;) Yep the Briarwood Arc is pretty intense, but this setup lead to a lot of more, this episode sucks you in. To be fair.. Deleilah must be incredbly powerful. Dark magic/Neromancing to be correct or not, she is a human after all, so Lord Briarwood don't see just "food" in there. What brings me to my old theory: Vampires could not exsist anyway, otherwise explained by "Magic" and thats no competent reason :P But this show is an exception. Because the character design ist so good. And Percys story is getting reeeeeally dark... Funfact: The man at the counter who took their weapons. Is modeled after Matthew Mercer. The designer and inventor of this fighter ;)
@DefinitelyNotDefinitive22 жыл бұрын
Yeah seems like Deleilah is the more powerful one between the two and must need to do something to keep Lord Briarwood alive as a vampire 🤔 We just have two episodes left to see 😀

Slight correction on the symbolism of ravens in pagan and pre-Christian mythology: Ravens were pretty universally seen as tricksters and already associated with death, as they are extremely intelligent social creatures who tend to be scavengers and carrion-feeders… …the shift between paganism and Christianity is that pagans did not see death itself as evil. It was just part of the natural cycle, not good or evil. It simply was, and it was necessary for change and renewal to happen. There were bad ways to die, and tragic ways to die, but the concept of death itself was entirely neutral. Christianity, however, views death as purely negative (with the possible exception of martyrdom), so that’s when pre-Christian symbols of death, destruction, and renewal started being seen as “evil.” Christians saw death as something terrifying, something to be feared and avoided at all costs; pagans did not.
