One of the few movies that lived up to the book! I usually read the book first and prefer to get the author's full perspective before getting a limited view from the movie but for Gone Girl I wish I'd had the chance to watch the movie first without knowing what was going to happen. Fincher has a history of improving on the source material

The sheets are folded in the package in an interesting manner as well, with layers and depth. I don't know if it was in the book, but it seems very Fincher.

The song Left Ey3 by Kreayshawn refers to Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes from the group TLC. via wikipedia "In 1994, when she was arrested for setting fire to Andre Rison's sneakers in a bathtub; the fire ultimately spread to the mansion they shared and destroyed it. She claimed that Rison had beaten her after a night out, and she set fire to his shoes to get back at him, but burning down the house was an accident. Lopes later revealed that she did not have a lot of freedom within the relationship and that Rison abused her emotionally and physically; she said that she released her frustrations about the relationship on the night of the fire."
@CarletonTorpin4 күн бұрын
Inaccuracy: Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes did not intentionally set fire to her abusive boyfriend's home on June 9th, 1994. Correction: Lisa Lopes was tragically killed in a car accident on April 25, 2002, in Honduras. There is no public record or credible source indicating that she was involved in setting fire to anyone's home. -EDITED TO ADD: I was incorrect about the "inaccuracy', which is ironic. Editing this comment to retain the original message, for clarity of message-chain and reply.

David fincher is probably my top three favorite directors ever and gone girl is goes back-and-forth with the social network as my favorite film of his. This is my favorite film of 2014. I saw this at the movies all I knew about it was it was a Ben Affleck movie directed by David Fincher. They got my money from that and I must’ve been in the same boat. It was a packed movie theater and the moment in the movie where they revealed that Amy is alive I’m telling you you would’ve thought it was an avengers movie with everybody going crazy I think that’s the reason they added a little couple extra seconds of her driving because everybody in the movie theater was talking at that time.

Also weird to think that it was the first of two missing/murdered wives cases for me, as the wife of a local chef disappeared and the husband later confessed to killing her. I’d met both and had eaten in his restaurant.

I thought this movie was brilliant. The perfect amount of mystery and intrigue. You mentioned half of this about Affleck character finally winning back the audience after “acting”, but they’re practically reversed in that when Nick is being himself, he’s a total douche. When he plays the game, he’s likeable. When Amy is playing the game, she wins everybody over. When she’s being herself, she’s insufferable. Would you ever be interested in a HS video about the prestige? Or…..Mass Effect?!?😟

I think you should have a watch & maybe break down Dark Places as well. It didn’t get a huge release but is a great adaptation of Flynn’s novel & really dark. I love David Fincher, and back when I first discovered him I watched through all of his movies and shows. When I got to Gone Girl I decided to read the book first because I knew I'd spoil the reading experience if I already knew the mystery. I was right, the book was a phenomenal experience. Then I watched the movie, and honestly I didn't like it at all. For people who've never read the book, I bet the movie is amazing, but there's just so much detail and greatness lost in the translation. And I know that's inevitable with movie adaptations, but I swear I'm not doing the usual "the book is so much better" that book nerds always say just because like a few little scenes and details had to be cut out. I really mean it that A LOT of the book's concepts, details, context, vibes, etc. just weren't translated very well for the screen. But this is all just my personal opinion. If you love the movie, that's awesome. I love David Fincher's work, just not this exact work as much haha

45:28 Bostonian here. In 2004, the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals winning the franchise’s first World Series since 1918. That time period was known as the Curse of the Bambino since the Red Sox sold (arguably greatest baseball player of all-time) Babe Ruth’s contract to the New York Yankees in 1920. Affleck wearing the shirt was likely a wink and a nod after the chaos regarding the Yankees cap.

Affleck and Scoot McNairy not only appear together in this film, AND Batman V. Superman Dawn of Justice, but they also shared screen time in Argo “F… Yerself” 😂 The reason Nick wears a St. Louis Cardinals shirt would be because the movie is set in Missouri, and they would presumably be the local Major League Baseball home team; otherwise the Kansas City Royals would be the other team around that area. 47:00 Nick shoving Amy up against a wall fits with a long history of Ben Affleck shoving people (usually against a wall) in the movies he appears in. Off the top of my head it happens in Dazed and Confused, Mallrats and Chasing Amy (both times to Jason Lee’s characters), Dogma (where I think he does it to both Matt Damon and Linda Fiorentino), along with his Batman movies, and a number of others I’m forgetting atm.

I think I can explain. It comes from the idea that not everybody makes a good victim. She was taken away from her cosmopolitan life with the promise of true love. Only to find herself an ignored and cheated on Midwestern wife taken for granted. There is an assumption that if you cheat on someone, if you’re rough with them, if you push them around and you lie to them, they will either just die inside and take it, or, be the bigger person and leave you with dignity, quietly taking their broken heart with them. That’s what most hurt people do. BUT they fantasise about snapping and really teaching the person who treated them like garbage a lesson. Rather than just leaving them to get on with messing up other peoples lives; to ruin their lives. If they won’t regret what they did to you because it was wrong, they will regret it because of what happens to you as a result. Choosing someone smarter than you as a victim can be a mistake. It’s all about revenge. Those who believe it’s common place to treat somebody like crap, but psychopathic to get revenge, probably treat people pretty badly themselves. It’s not the good Christian thing to do, but, it isn’t undeserved either.

To your sports teams point: The Mets & Cardinals both have ties to Affleck's favorite & hometown team, the Red Sox. The Mets beat the Red Sox in the 1986 World Series, one of the most infamous examples of their fabled championship drought. As you point out, the Yankees are the main rival to the Red Sox and no self-respecting fan of either team would wear gear of the other. And the Cardinals are the most popular baseball team in Missouri, so would stand to reason Nick would support them. And they're also the team the Red Sox beat in 2004 to finally end their championship drought of 86 years. So, Affleck could have been referencing that in a smirking way.
