What’s poppin, my Zillas? It’s me MT and welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show! And Heavy Spoilers ahead because this is about to be a breakdown of Godzilla Minus One! A multi-million dollar masterpiece of a moving monster movie that’s all about the value of fighting for the future. Because what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. Let’s get into it!
Godzilla Minus One was released publicly in Japan on November 3, 2023 and was directed AND written by Takashi Yamazaki. With a team of 35 phenomenally talented VFX artists, Yamazaki was able to use a string of incredibly creative filming techniques to rake in a crazy 115.8 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $10-12 million dollars…with 8 months of VFX work making up 25-33% of that relatively modest budget.
The name “Minus One” was chosen by Yamazaki to reflect the status of Japan after being attack by back to back national tragedies. First with their losses in World War II, which set the Country to Zero…then with Godzilla kicking Japan while they were already down and at empty…setting Japan to a symbolic “Minus One”

The director and writer, Takashi Yamazaki confirmed that Noriko's survival is from the same phenomenon that allows Godzilla to regenerate. The black mark seen on her neck are Godzilla's cells. This interview was back in April during Godzilla Fest in Osaka if anyone wants the details.

The reason it HAD to be Tachibana was because he was the only engineer that would have supported Shikishima's kamikaze plan without spilling it to the rest of his compatriots.
@wesley3300

Yeah, only Tachibana could really understand what was at stake for both him and Koichi. Made perfect sense to me

Another note is that we cannot really know if Shikishima "volunteered" to be a kamikaze. Kamikazes were more heavily used as a desperation attempt once they began losing the war (some exceptions), but once they ran out the enthusiastic volunteers, they began using coercion, shame, etc to get pilots to become kamikazes. I think it is more likely that Shikishima was coerced due to the fact that his mission is towards end of the war, and he obviously was not enthusiastic about the mission considering he opted out.
@miguelgonzalezg6223
@miguelgonzalezg6223 2 ай бұрын
Exactly the comment I was looking for. Not all kamikaze pilots were willful volunteers, many were coerced into it.

Didn't Shikishima said to his parents that he did what they told him to do, "to live"?
@Eyes-Scream0213
@Eyes-Scream0213 Ай бұрын
This is what the reviewers forget to mention. Shikishima is actually not a chicken or a coward. He just received the letter from his parents to live and he decided to value his life only to find out that his parents died because of the bombings. The irony of that is he is supposed to be the one to have a suicide mission to stop the air raids of US forces bombing Tokyo. So knowing that he failed his mission just to find out that his parents died because of his decision to live is so heavy for him that he almost want to die.
@ktsul12
@ktsul12 Ай бұрын
We see shikishima pull out a letter that tells him to come back alive. And his parents must have known he was a kamikaze because his neighbor (sumiko) knew he was. But how he ended up being a kamikaze, we don’t really know for certain. All I can say is him opting out of the mission can possibly be because of his parents wishes, but the movie does show him shaking with fear when he lands his plane and when trying to go up against pre-bomb Godzilla. So it is quite possible shikishima and his parents didn’t want him to go through a suicide attack and he “agreed” through possible coercion. For the other comment, I think it is unlikely his mission had anything to do with the Tokyo air raids because those happened in March, and the end of ww2 was September. The movie begins with shikishima leaving is mission at the final days of ww2. So I don’t think this was in March of 1945. I think when sumiko blamed him for the destruction of her home and Tokyo, I don’t think she meant literally thought he was meant to stop the Tokyo air raids, she just meant the losses all of Japan had suffered due to “cowards” like him (her words). Even if she did mean it literally, I can’t imagine she would be privy to the knowledge of which mission he was or wasn’t on, just that he became a kamikaze pilot. So I really don’t think he was tasked to help with the Tokyo air raids.
@testfire3000

Yeah, I have no reason to think Shikishima chose to be a kamikaze pilot.

You are probably correct, as the director had confirmed in an interview, these are G Cells, like those in the 1989 film, Godzilla vs Biollante, which later leads to Spacegodzila.
@eldritchmorgasm4018
@eldritchmorgasm4018 2 ай бұрын
I believe, and hope, the sequels will be a kinda "Half-Century War" thing, making it very personal for that family. It could move into & end at the end of the Cold War. As a direct reference to the style & tone of the 80s movies, which would fit this new continuity. The black spots spreading might be G Cells, yes, sucking people dry, killing them, regenerating Big G. But I also think this could have something to do with Biolante. Like it spreads, the government sees this as an epidemic & separates the infected from the rest in a camp, and there they all die, because it grows outside of them, combining them in a big bio-plant-ish nightmare, forming Biolante, still kinda connected to Big G. This way new Kaijus get born, by infecting people & individual mutation creating new lifeforms.

Plus everything being said as godzilla being the "personification" of Japan's fears and the emotional value it contains for the Japanese nation give it even more weight to an already amazing script. I also loved how the Japanese learned to value the life of their citizens over their victories and defeats. Gj you guys

Living on Kauai, where we have only one movie theater, and it was not booked, I was not able to watch it until Netflix. Never have I wanted Godzilla so very dead. As a Titan-sized Godzilla fan and longtime Heavy Spoilers subscriber, I am happy to see such an epic crossover! Can't go wrong with MT, either. Godzilla Minus One has had a profound experience on many people. I love this film because of the relatable characters. Their goals, actions, and personalities are inspiring to watch repeatedly. This film has mastered the art of juxtaposition. In Japanese culture, Dead Sea Fish represents someone who's given up on life. It not only reflects Shikishima's depression and fears, it heralds Godzilla's purpose in this film as being anti-life, which, arguably, is the true secret antagonist of this film, as anti-life overshadows even Godzilla (who is fighting to survive like the rest of us). Looking up at the mushroom cloud he caused in Ginza suggests this, with the mushroom cloud being Death, which Godzilla has cheated twice now. Director Takashi Yamazaki has confirmed that Noriko's Black Mark indicates Godzilla Cells are in her body. What this means for the future of Noriko and Japan remains to be seen.

Regarding the G-cells in Noriko. Given the extensive trauma she sustained in the blast, she should have been reduced to jello but looked remarkably well except for the left eye patch. If she would have been a hybrid, her regenerated parts would look more Godzilla-like, but she looked like herself. The cells creeping up her neck were on the same side of her damaged left eye which suggest they would heal that remaining damage. I suggest that G-cells only have regenerative powers but not create a hybrid organism like Biollante. Also some of the 30,000 injured people may also have undergone regeneration

It could also, for the first time, be an actual explanation for why Godzilla grows to become more of a protector. By using the strength of people who continue to fight on to survive for family, themselves, or their friends and country, that could start to affect Godzilla to become more of a neutral/protective force.

Operation Crossroads is completely different from the atomic test that was referenced in Godzilla (Gojira) 1954. The 1954 movie was referencing the Castle Bravo thermonuclear weapon test on Bikini Atoll on March 1, 1954, which lead to the Lucky Dragon 5 incident, which inspired the film. My understanding is that the Castle Bravo test detonated a hydrogen bomb while Crossroads detonated the plutonium implosion bomb similar to the bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

I don’t think he chose to be a kamikaze pilot he was probably just a pilot chosen for that mission

Most kamikaze pilotes at the end of the war was volentold. Some thing in the style of "If you don't do this, you'll bring huge shame on to your parents and family". Japan have pretty mutch allways been a nation that revolvees around Honor. And that mentality have caused it's people to a huge amount of suffering trought their history. Don't missunderstand me, it have also brought incredibly beutifull art and exelent things like their work etics in traditional crafts. But during the wars they been trough, it werry often ends with alot of civilians and soliders alike, ending them selfe instead of allowing them selfe to be taken prisoners or having to live beneath an invading force.

Things you didn't notice/know: The Fins popping out, and hammering back in at once, is the same action in the Atomic bomb needed to detonate. The Black Rain, not only symbolic, is also Nuclear Fallout. And I actually champion a different theory on the ending, that you accidentally touched on. "Somehow everyone is now happy he didn't blow himself up." My theory, is that Sukushima did die. Let's go back to the ending. The music cuts, he's flying towards Godzilla as it's preparing its nuke. He was told about how to activate the bomb, and afterwards was shown the parachute. He shows up to fly the plane in a jacket with a fur lining. Said lining is not on his flight jacket. Every shot after his plane crunches, no one interacts with him, even though they're good friends and all. He comes down, and only talks to one person, a childhood friend Sumiko, and then Noriko at the "Hospital." She then asks him if his "War was Over." which references a line he only gives to his minesweeping buddies after her funeral, not during his break down to her. The line he gave to her instead was "What If I died back then, on that island, and right now with you is the last happy dream as I die?" We see his Happy last dream. Meanwhile, on the Boat, everyone is saluting as Godzilla is dying. They could be saluting to all the lives lost to stop Godzilla, or they could be saluting the Pilot who gave his life for everyone. Tachibana gets the report and breaks down. The mechanic had given him a chance to live because he actually did deserve that chance, and Sukushima didn't choose it. His friends all hang their head as they come back to port. Every shot seen from the Boat's perspective, there's no Parachute in the sky, even when from his perspective the chute would be right above Godzilla. And a lot of emphasis has been placed on how Godzilla surfacing causes explosive decompression on fish dragged up along with him, the same is true when his body sinks underwater. If Sukushima did parachute out, he would've landed in the water near Godzilla, and be drawn under to drown. So his point of view is showing something unrealistic, a dream he could never have, while everyone else has to suffer. When Sumiko gets the letter, she's panicking. We don't hear what the Letter is about. That panic, could be a reaction to the message that he's gone. The movie is called "Godzilla Minus One" It's a Story about being at rock bottom, and being struck below it. Sukushima lost his Emotional Support, had been beaten down by all his guilt, down to rock bottom. The only thing left to lose was his life and a chance for a happy tomorrow.

This is an interesting new theory. The hypothesis that Shikishima and the others became Heroic Spirits may be plausible.

@@satochirina2008 Thanks! If you take Godzilla Minus One's Inspirations from the Original Godzilla (like recording the Original Roar played in a theatre) at the end of the original Gojira, the men on the boats are saluting Serizawa's sacrifice to bring down Gojira with the Oxygen Destroyer as Gojira slept on the bottom of the bay.

The one big thing that counter your theory, is why "show Godzilla" regenerating. And why show the black regenerative infection on Noriko's neck??? If the ending was meant to be a happy illusion for Shikishima why "involve things" that will allude to more "not so blissful" plot thread? I am not sure if this is actually true, but people had been saying the director confirmed that the Infection on Noriko is basically Godzilla's cells infecting her during the Atomic Breath since chunks of Godzilla also flew off every time he does the thing as we can see him regenerating chunks of skin after he dishes out an atomic breath. Shikishima surviving radioactive exposure might also be due to him getting infected with Godzilla cells since basically he was right above Godzilla as chunks of Godzilla gets ruptured by his atomic energy. Plus Shikihima will end up falling on the sea full of Godzilla carcass. So he has more chance of catching Godzilla cells compared to how Noriko got it. Since Norika was lucky enough to exposed to Godzilla bits as she was blown away by the explosion. Also the Godzilla veins grew larger as she hugs Shikishima might be due to whatever Shikishima also got infected too after he destroyed Godzilla. The infection thing is more plausible to me at least since the movie story was influenced by the pandemic.
