I came away with the impression that the rules given by Tuckett's brother and the other friends were genuine, and that the visions Mia was seeing of Riley suffering in Limbo are just the ghosts or malevolent entities manipulating her because as stated in the rules, "if you die with them in you, they'll have you forever". Riley's body was already rejecting the possession as his sister told Mia Riley was getting better... which is why the ghosts were pushing Mia to kill him already because they were going to lose their hold on him.

Loved the breakdown, Paul. I love hearing everyone's different interpretations. My take on Mia's death was that she actually sacrificed herself in order to save Riley and others from herself and how dangerous she had become as she was continually being manipulated by evil spirits. I think Mia throws herself into traffic rather than being pushed by her friend Jade or the evil spirit pretending to be her mother. Mia clearly has a realization when the spirit impersonating her mother tells her that “WE will take care of him (Riley) forever.” She knows that it’s not actually her mom and that she has been manipulated this whole time. Manipulated into stabbing her father, manipulated into nearly killing Riley. She sacrifices herself to protect those she loves. She knows she just stabbed her dad and that she is a danger to those around her. The subtle acting from Sophie Wilde shows that she has a realization of some sort, and she clearly takes her hands off the wheelchair right before it cuts to the crash. Leading me to believe that she jumped out into traffic rather than her being pushed by Jade or the spirit. That was just my take. I agree with your assessment of Duckett and his bro, and the end being a mirror of that, but I just like to think that Mia actually had more agency and choice in her own death rather than being manipulated until the end. There are loads of nuances and ways to interpret the ending, but I think you did an excellent job. Cheers.

@@nutta4236 I think that's the thing, regardless of whether you think she was pushed or she killed herself, she doesn't actually realize she's dead until she grabs the person's hand at the party. I get what you are saying, that she would be consciously aware of her choice, and thus know that she's dead. But none of us knows what happens to a person when they die. The film is an allegory for addiction. Of course there are other elements to it as well, but most people who watch it think, "Why would anyone do that?" Why would you touch the hand in the first place? It seems extremely scary and dangerous.That's exactly what I thought, it makes no sense, but... I'm a recovering addict! 🤦♀There are SO many times in my life that I can look back on now and think, "Why did I do that?! I could have died! I could have become majorly addicted!" (I'm someone who has experimented with almost everything, but ironically, got addicted to wine...The "tame," legal stuff. That's what sent me to rehab and almost ruined my life.) A lot of times you watch horror movies and think that the characters are making stupid decisions (which they usually are), but if you watch this film and think, "That would never happen," you're just wrong. Almost every heroin addict had a moment where they decided, "I'm going to try heroin." Why? That's asinine. Why would anyone do that to themselves? But we do. The opioid epidemic is getting worse every day. So many of us have "touched the hand" and "invited the spirit in" even though it makes no logical sense. And a lot of people end up in a state of hell on earth because of it. What a fantastic film! I love "smart" horror. The scary parts were really scary and the story made sense. (Although I did walk away with some questions, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.) Too many horror films these days have a great premise but blow it by the end, but this one was strong from start to finish.

Hey Paul, I always enjoy your breakdowns and I've been an avid viewer for quite a while. Normally, I'm content to sit back, enjoy, hit the like the button and all that jazz, however with this movie I feel you missed something incredibly big. Perhaps it's because of my own struggles, but this movie seems like a metaphor for addiction. It perfectly recreates what it's like to try new drugs at parties in your teenage years. Your eyes even dilate when "taking a hit". She comments on how good it feels and keeps going back for "one more hit". Addiction is also genetic so it's very possible that the same diseases is how her mother passed away. Also, as much as I enjoyed the two characters who were the "keepers" of the hand they really screamed "drug dealer" to me. I think the grief angle hits pretty deep to as addiction itself comes with it's own form of grief, especcially when you've lost people to same drug you're using, but overall I think it's more addiction as a whole rather than just grief. Anyway, I hope you have a great one, man! Keep up the great work!

When the little girl said "I'll let you in" mia experienced what it was like to be a child trapped in eternity with grieving mothers.. all of the naked women were trying to 'claim' riley, as he was the closest thing to what they lost
@d3maccus Жыл бұрын
why do you think they were all grieving mothers? I disagree with this part.... I think they are want to consume to his life essence, abuse him, corrupt his innocence, and torment his soul. In the scene from the void, where they are all on him and around him, they are naked and all over him as he is struggling and basically being molested. It doesn't really remind me of mothers wanting to be around their children...Its more like they get a cat-nip-like high from their life-force, similarly to how the teens get a kind of high from being possessed, but way more intense. In that same scene form the void (which was originally two minutes of gruesome footage they decided to trim) there is a big, rotted spirit who seems to be on top of Riley, and that is likely the most evil spirit or some kind of daemon that running things down there.. and the first ghost refers to him:. "he likes you, he'll split ya boy, he'll split ya....there he is....he's right behind you". This spirit is the one controlling everything. In fact, it is clear he has the drowned-woman-spirit doing his bidding, and the whole Mia's mother speaking through Riley part was actually her pretending, and it was initially done just to get passed 90 seconds so the evil one could possess Riley. You can even notice how the spirit doesn't reveal any hint it is her mother until like 50 seconds (their original agreed cutoff time for Riley). I think this one spirit or daemon is much more powerful, and he can use and manipulate the other spirits and their established connection to living humans. That also why after the first seance, when Riley is sleeping next to Mia, she gets up and caresses his head in a sweet way, and then we see a rotted hand caressing him a super creepy way. She is connected to Mia and this [and possibly other] powerful entities can sort of use this doorway, but I think the doorway isn't fully open since Mia barely went over 90sec.

Did Jade grab for Mia or did Jade push Mia? and another theory was that the spirit in Riley basically threw Mia with the last of it's power since Mia was still possessed so they could keep her. . . . . .

To me, the movie is about attempt and failure to connect and communicate with others. The hand *could* represent phones/ tech/internet. Mia is motivated by loneliness and wants to use the hand to achieve connection and communication, but there are other forces she's barely aware of using it to deceive her, alienate her from her real friends, and gain something for themselves.

@Nomaaaaam Жыл бұрын
But the internet/phones can also be a good thing. There are suicide prevention hotlines now, support groups for recovering addicts, etc. Whereas with drugs they’re pretty much all bad. Especially with prolonged usage - as the movie shows. It also speaks to how letting them in too long basically binds the demons to you just like abusing drugs can cause permanent damage. I was surprised to see not that many people point this out. I thought it was super obvious that’s what it was an allegory for. Even down to the big huge dilated eyes when “taking a hit.”

I think Jade saved her brother at the end, just in the nick of time, the same way she saved him just in time from cracking his head wide open on the table(shelf?) by putting her hand down; also combined with the entity losing its “grasp” on Mia so she let go which made it easier for Jade to do whatever she actually did to save her brother (i.e. pushed her or grabbed the wheelchair).

According to me, this movie exactly depicts the point - stages of grief. 1. We saw that Mia never accepted her mother's demise. 2. Secondly, she was angry with her father as she continuously blamed him for her mother's death. 3. The hand acts as a factor in the "bargaining stage", where she deals with her grief by getting addicted to that hand, or because the ghost portrays herself to be her mother. 4. We saw her already being in a depression right from the start of this movie. 5. Sadly, we never got to see Mia going to the "acceptance" stage. Also, this movie has some heavy symbolism. One of which was addiction to drugs. Hats off, great work!!!

I think the "hand" represents drugs - like oxycontin, fentanyl or heroin. Mia's moms suicide letter also references drug abuse - and there's doubt if she really killed herself or it was an accidental overdose. Like in the 80's horror movies referenced sex as the big offender - Talk To Me uses drugs. Clever
@Wolf83 Жыл бұрын
Also! Jade's mom (which would've been a teenager in the 80's) was constantly after Jade and her boyfriend - trying to warn about having sex - never considering drugs to do more harm. Gen X Vs. Gen Z. Again, clever

This is correct. Danny and Michael Philippou have spoken about the influence for the hand on the Joe Rogan podcast. The hand was inspired by teen drug use at parties and how drugs affect everyone differently, hence each spirit being different every time. This then extends into the metaphor for schizophrenia, where if you hold the hand for too long, the demons will be with you forever. The demons are a representation of the real life struggle people with schizophrenia face with visual and auditory hallucinations, especially when they tell the individual to harm themselves or others. We also see delusional beliefs, which is another symptom of schizophrenia.

I was hoping for a bit more depth in this analysis. I mean, it’s a synopsis of the movie, sure. But I feel like there’s so many possibilities to explore with Riley. Like, what did Riley Actually see when he touched the hand? Was it really Mias mom? I think if it was, he would have immediately looked at Mia, or at least said something. Instead, whatever it was seemed to take his breath away, but there was a hint of recognition on his face. Because he never looked away. He didn’t even flinch. He almost seemed more confused than anything else. What would cause that reaction?? And the fact that, whatever it was, stayed after the seance; presumably because they forgot to blow out the candle, it was hell bent on mutilating and murdering Riley. I think because of this, it was decidedly Not Mia’s mother he saw, and perhaps a demon or evil spirit of some kind. Anybody else think about this? There’s so much to consider here

@@itscard0man You can actually see a few frames where Jade reaches the wheelchair and grabs ahold of Mia. Rather instead Jade seeing Mia about to kill her brother (with good reason to believe so as she was literally about to before deciding not to) ran up to save her brother and shoved her (pushing over the wheelchair). The reason I thought this right off the bat was it made no sense for the wheelchair to have been tossed over with Jade on the ground holding Riley if Mia had just decided to jump into traffic herself.

This movie is ‘beyond’ horror - it does well to work with every essential trope in a subtle way for the most part, what was overwhelming for me was how authentic it was. The acting is so genuine & every single character gets their own story arc that’s fulfilled - such a good film.

In the film, when a spirit enters the body it acts out how it died. In Riley’s case, Mia’s mum possessed Riley for the first 90 seconds but then the “evil man spirit” forced her out and that was when he acted the way he was when dying. Since it was already way over 90 seconds (2 minutes) the spirit was able to possess Riley longer and with that in mind, he attempted to kill him but failed. Mia was also possessed by the drowned evil spirit but she went along with a manipulative plan to get Mia’s soul. In the end, it was Mia’s fake mum (drowned evil spirit) that tried to first kill Riley for the other spirit and then kill Mia but it failed and only Mia died.
@madeleinemoyn47988 ай бұрын
Riley also tried to kill himself when he was possessed (and again later) which is how Mia's mother died. I don't know how significant that is, as it does seem like Riley was possessed by that old guy.

I think you nailed most of the big points, and a movie like this really thrives in some of the contrast between light and dark, and pointing out the mirrors is a great bit of world building. One thing I was curious to hear about is something they played with , which is age. They made a big deal about not letting someone of a certain age play, which just seems like a standard precaution but there is a blink and you miss is bit of baby eating in one scene. It makes me wonder if the spirits become euphoric when in the presence of someone really young, and if that contributed in their unwillingness to let him go.

Most of the relationships in the movie feel stilted and rigid from lack of communication. Mia and Max, Jade and Daniel, Jade and her mom, Jade and Riley, Daniel and Mia and then this is paralleled by the main "talk to me" line with the ghosts. I really loved this movie
@SurvReacts7 ай бұрын
Oh my gosh watching this back I just realized some key parts idk if others did. 1st the spirits wanted a PURE soul to torcher not just a kid. Which is why they chose Riley and not his friend who we saw was a bad influence on Riley. 2nd mia’s mom was never really in the movie, if she was it could’ve possibly been the one who first possessed Riley which is why Riley looked at Mia before letting in the spirit, but going longer than 90 second and Mia making hand contact with both Riley and the hand opened the possibility of Riley getting possessed by the old man we see at the end of the movie. Since they want Riley so bad they tried to kill him instantly but was stopped. 3rd the demon that possessed Daniel was actually the old lady that we see sucking on his toes, I believe this because it appeared the soul was a sort of nymphomaniac and started sucking on the dogs tongue. 4th the kangaroo actually represents Riley. I say this because it was a symbol to trick Mia into believing that “putting it out its misery is the best thing” and since Mia didn’t kill the kangaroo they tease her by showing it’s still struggling hence Riley.

@yoongistongue416311 ай бұрын
For me there's a bigger meaning to this movie. Like let's imagine for a second those are not possessions, but drugs and Mia is actually going through the psychotic breakdown, bc she doesn't understand why her mom passed away. She suspect her committing a suicide but at the same time she doesn't understand how would ber mom left her like that. So in the process she starts to blame her dad. Then, if her father TALKED TO HER and have her a supportive hand when she needed it, maybe none of those would happen. But he didn't. And if you look basically at parents in the movie you'll notice they're not really parenting much. It's like trust teenagers are left to themselves. So there's a simple message actually, for the parents to talk with their kids before some strangers do this first (ghosts in the movie) or they will try to seek for other solutions on their own ( seeking alternative realities aka possessions).

So I just watched TALK TO ME for a second time trying to catch things I missed on the first go round. I have questions that I can't answer on my own and I'm hoping someone can help me out. 1) When Mia is in the hospital after she gets hit by the car, she walks by an old man's room and he is sitting on the bed alone. We see this same old man earlier in the movie when a nurse is attending to him after Mia was wanting to see Riley and his mom told her to go away. She then sees her mom in a window's reflection. The old man was in Room 113. Who's that old man and what did his presence mean? They wanted the viewer to see him for sure so it means something. 2) Also, after Mia gets hit by the car and she is in the hospital, she sees Riley, Sue, and Jade sitting on the bed and Riley looks all better. Then she walks a little further and sees Jade and two other people walking in another room and the lights go out suddenly. I think Mia says "Jade, Sue" Who were those people? One I recognized from the back as Jade, but the other two was a woman with long blonde hair and the one in the middle had really short hair......was that Riley and Sue? Sue has red hair. 3) Did Mia's dad die? He was walking away from her in the hospital at the end when she was calling him and he just walked into the elevator without acknowledging her and the doors closed. I'm thinking he survived the jugular stab but I just wanna be sure. Okay the answers to these questions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

The movie is a metaphor for teenage drug use- while some teens come out of it unscathed, some are changed forever or worse; we see this play out in many ways: the possessions most commonly happen during parties, people feel peer pressure (or a desire for escape) that causes them to participate, a ritual is involved while using, the hand is passed from teen to teen like something illicit, and most importantly... possession changing someone's perception of reality to the point that they might harm themselves or others.
