The difference between Elvis and Dolly is that he wasn't a writer. He sang songs written by other people. He loved her song, I Will Always Love You, and wanted to record it. She agreed, but the day before the session, his manager, Col Parker called and told her Elvis doesn't record anything unless we get the publishing rights to the song. She told him no way, so Elvis never recorded it. She said she cried all night. It was Elvis for goodness sake! Then when Whitney recorded it, she said she cried all the way to the bank! Also, Prescilla told her that Elvis sang the song to her the day their divorce was final. He really loved the song.

That is how it was for many young women when I was a young girl. When the men walked away, the women were left shouldering all the responsibility and scorn. I knew one girl who was beaten so badly by her father that she ended up losing the baby. I really enjoyed your reaction. Dolly's writing is second to none and her story telling abilities are reflected in her beautiful songs. When she wrote this, her record label didn't like the subject matter and thought it was too 'controversial'💔Dolly insisted on 'Down From Dover' be included on her album - she knew how many young girls/women had been through this scenario She got her way & that was that! I've said that myself. She conveys all the emotions of the song and makes us feel the pain of the girl who is betrayed by her lover. And also by her parents who toss her from their home. The baby dies and we know her false hearted lover is done with her. Sad is not a strong enough word for the anguish of the situation.

She was NOT hiding this from him because he knew. He promised he'd be back by the time her dress was revealing. She was hiding it from the people that her dad said would prevent him from ever being able to show his face if they learned of it. I think it was a big mistake on the part of her record company to leave out the verse about her taking the job out on the farm taking care of an old lady because that is a huge part of the story. They left it out of the song because back then Nashville followed a pretty strict FORMULA about their songs and you had a certain number of verses and your songs were not to exceed a certain number of minutes, so they pulled this verse. BIG MISTAKE. I have found ONE version of this song that includes that missing verse. It is on the album where on the cover she is sitting sidewise in a chair with one arm hooked over the back of the chair and it is in black and white. By far that is my favorite version of this song. But even without that verse which specifically mentions a baby, she says, "time is running out and a TINY FACE will show itself" and when a single girl is hoping that her boyfriend will "hurry back from Dover" and is talking about how a dress is revealing, these things make it very clear that she is talking about an unexpected pregnancy and the imminent birth of a baby. Her mother told her he would not keep his word and come back and turns out Mom was right.

Unlike most of Dolly's music, this song isn't autobiographical. Dolly wrote this song about some of her classmates in high school. She tried to record this track early on in her tenure with Porter Wagoner, but her label hated it because of the subject matter. That's probably why she edited the original lyrics. Dolly edited the original lyrics of " Coat of Many Colors" before she recorded it. It was a few years (1971) until her record label finally let her record it. They didn't release it as a single, nor did they promote it. That's probably why you found so few videos of this track. It's a hidden gem.

The "extra lyrics" had to be left out because the song would have been too long for radio. MOST radio would not play it because in those days you couldn't discuss such issues openly, it was too controversial. LISTEN CLOSELY to the words and follow along.
