@@CyberiusT Lots of gidgee trees (shrubby things), and that stuff stinks to high heaven when it burns. Also thorn trees, just like you see in images of Africa (usually with a leopard reclining in them). They drop thorns about 1-2 inches long which will penetrate any shoe leather and cause infections. From personal experience. Millions and millions of meat ants. Camping out on the ground is an exercise for the foolhardy. Snakes like the warmth of sleeping bags. There's larger critters out there as well. Depending on where you go, but those water buffalo will turn any speeding sedan into a matchbox with everyone still inside if one gets hit head on. We sell the camels to Saudi Arabia for some nice money. They pay top price for the unsullied stock. There's a whole bunch more going on out there than meets the eye, but it's not a land where food grows on trees, unless you count the prickly pear infestations.

Theres no north south east west divide. We didnt have a north south civil war type scenario. We had a rebellion during the gold rush between the miners and the government over rip off cost of mining licences. Not many people involved. Some deaths and injuries and the miners lost but it was the seed of our move towards seperating from British apron strings. A small but important brick in our history. All the states developed independantly and there was no enmity between any of them. Very different from American history in that regard. Australia and New Zealand are like snotty brothers. Our rugby games are like a blood sport We niggle and insult each other all the time but dont dare anyone else try it . Plenty of Kiwis live here and vice versa.

Now wait a minute. There's a tiny bit of attitude from the large Western side towards the East, and/or vice versa. Just a smidge. Perhaps because a large percentage of the population, at least in Perth, are from Great Britain. They brought a strong sense of territorial feeling with them, to the extent, that during water saving days, people were encouraged to "turn off your sprinklers because you're just going to water next door's lawn because of the winds". Which is UnAustralian in sentiment. My daughter, from Queensland, was living in Perth for a while, and was frankly shocked at the ads on TV on this theme.

@@Kayenne54 yeah there is but just a smidge like you said But tners little irritations everywhere. if you ask Queenslanders and Northern Territorians about anyone in the southern states or WA about the eastern states theyll be a little dismissive. Sydney and Melbourne snipe at each other all the time. Tassie is just forgotten a lot (tho I luv Tassie). Everyone hates Canberra. But nothing like what he was inferring compared to North vs South American civil war and the undercurrent that still exists to an extent. Mix us all up in National sport teams or in the military we're all just Aussies.

I came to South Australia as a 16 year old in 1966. Fell in love with the city of Adelaide, and lived here ever since. There is no north south animosity between South Australia and the Northern Territory. This isn't America with attitudes stretching back to a civil war. The Aussie accent is prevalent throughout the country, with only slight variations from region to region. Most Aussies can pick the variations. But if you come to Australia as a tourist you would swear all Australians sound the same. Whereas an Australian travelling around America will be amazed at the different accents moving around the different states from north to south, and east to west.

True, but the biggest variation in accent now (vowels) is age-related. Sometimes I cannot tell if a person was born in the US and assimilated or is Australian-born.

The relative differences between regional dialects in Australia is much smaller due to our smaller population and being settled later on with much of the population increases happening post-Industrial revolution. Where they do differ more is in the sociolects. Cultivated is posher, general is what most speak some form of, broad is largely more rural/lower class based and there's also ethno-Australian accents.

With the Antartic Territory claim, that dates back to 1841 when the British originally made a claim on territory, and then ended up being transferred to Australia in the 1930s (obviously this was before the whole 'no one can lay claim to the antartic' treaty). It's mostly used these days to ensure environmental protection both on land and in the sea around the area, for example the waters off the coast of the Australian territory are designated as a whale sanctuary and the Australian government makes sure there is no mining or other destructive activities happening on land. There are a number of scientific research stations in the area as well. I honestly don't mind that we claim the territory, so long as it remains a way to ensure that no one else can just get in there and start messing things up environmentally.

Not a military conflict. But people from the states, Northern Territory, ACT and New Zealand treat each other like siblings. We tease each other but there's no real hostility involved. New Zealand's like a little brother. Unfortunately a large percentage of our Aboriginal population were wiped out in the early days of colonisation due to European diseases, etc. Europe has yet another reason to love us this year. During 2000 Sydney Olympics the then Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark fell in love with and Mary Donaldson from Tasmania. They got married four years later. It's like a real-life fairy tale. Recently his mum decided to abdicate her thrown. So now she's his Queen Mary. She's such a lovely lady who pretty much charms everyone who meets her. Frederick's an Honorary Aussie.

3:24 Australia has a genuine claim over Antarctica (probs easier for you to google it; long explanation, etc) 4:05 always makes me giggle how Americans pronounce Canberra. Btw, it's Can-brah 5:10 no, no conflict between North and South 12:05 cos they killed so many of them (historically - they almost wiped out the entire Tasmanian Indigenous population). That said, native Americans and Indigenous Canadians make about about the same (3-5%). Also, they don't refer to themselves as 'Aboriginal'; they are Indigenous Australians on the mainland and Torres Straight Islanders off the mainland (broadly speaking). They also refer to themselves by their language and their borders. In my State (Victoria) there are almost 25 - eg: I live on Boonwurrung country. 16:45 the food - it's really hard to define our food because it is such a fusion. Because we are so multicultural, our food isn't really one thing. The Chinese came here during the gold rush (1850). They've been here for ages ... so makes sense that they have heavily influenced our food. Each time there is a war or conflict, Australia saw a rise in population from that group/country. After the Vietnam war we had a lot of Vietnamese come here. During the conflict in Sudan and the Horn of Africa, there was a rise in that group. And, of course, our food is heavily influenced by where the majority of us came from - the UK. So our food is such a mix - it's a bit of this and a bit of that, lol. But the best description I can give is it is UK base with Asian and African fusion If you and your family come here you would be most welcome and I hope you have a fantastic time!

Aboriginals are the original inhabitants of Australia with a history estimated at over 75 thousand years, meaning they are the oldest living culture. They currently make up 3.8% of population, estimation, as some may not have participated in the census of 2021. Although there has been no civil war, some rebellions, in Australia. It needs to be remembered that the British invaded and killed any Aboriginal that stood against them. Aboriginals did not get citizenship in their own country till 1948 and were not allowed to vote until 1962. They were not given full and total voting rights until 1984 when it become compulsory for all Aboriginal people to vote in line with all other Australians.

Until it floods. The inland portion of Australia is below sea level; I used to find sea shells and other molluscs in petrified stone beside the highway on the way to Winton, Queensland. I also found obsidian in the same area - large areas scattered with it. Seemed like a huge volcano just levelled that region millions of years ago. The western side of the Great Dividing Range slopes downhill into the centre of Australia; so basically, most of Australia is a bowl. Interestingly, most continents on the planet have a higher elevation on their western coast line, Australia's lies on its eastern side. The Great Dividing Range starts somewhere in Victoria, and finishes up near New Guinea (undersea at that point). People do grow crops; the Great Artesian Basin underlying most of Queensland and into NT, parts of NSW and even South Australia supply bore water; to water cattle and stock, and provide fresh fruit and vegetables, but usually only for local consumption on the cattle stations.

African Americans are largely descended from slaves. African Australians are largely refugees from Sudan and other civil wars in the last 20 years or so. There are lots of former New Zealanders and Pacificas (Polynesian people from the islands). Polynesians tend to be big so there is a high proportion in rugby.

Our Accent? Why so cute? When I was in the States people would assume - from my accent - I was from the UK! When asked where I was from I would just have to mess with their heads and reply: Tasmania. Cannot tell you how many came back with:"Transylvania!" A few said; "Oh Yeah, Tassie Devil!" But most meant the Cartoon Devil and refused to believe there was an actual animal. { Looks nothing like...} So - now you've gotta do the: 'Wild Tasmania' Docu, so you can understand that little dry pebble up above us that has delusions of grandeur, is not the REAL Australia; Tassie is. 🤣

The differences between the two flags are: NZ - no Commonwealth Star. Australia's Commonwealth Star represents the 7 states and territories. NZ Southern Cross is made up of 4 red 5 pointed stars with white borders, Australia has 4 white 7 pointed stars and 1 5 pointed star with no borders. The red stars on NZ's flag represents Māori heritage and the white border is just to make it stand out better against the blue background.

You can't choose between UK and Australia, they are two completely different propositions. Travel wise for you Americans its a lot closer and cheaper to fly to UK. The history, culture and architecture is rich and ancient, the countryside is beautiful, lush green, gorgeous, chocolate box scenery. Australia is a long, and therefore, expensive flight. The european history and architecture is relatively new (1788). The ancient history is aboriginal and whilst beautiful and rich, its somewhat sporadic and sometimes not accessible to everyone. There are aboriginal tourist performances, visitor centres and artworks, but you must seek them out. Australian climate/terrain: There are lush, tropical zones, medium temperate AND dessert, plus miles of magnificent quiet beaches and islands. It all depends on what you want (and can afford) from your vacation. In my humble opinion (and I'm Australian) both UK and Australia are fantastic and worth a look. Australia is BIG, so seeing it all is impossible or can also be long and expensive. Also weather in Australia is good, but we do have winter (June, July August) and even snow in some places. Northern parts of Australia only have two seasons - wet and dry. Its always cool-warm to very hot in these zones. And yes, we look upon New Zealand as our little brother. And yes, there is sibling rivalry (mostly about sports and who invented pavlova 😂) but when push comes to shove, we stand together and are VERY protective of one another.... Pavlova is a desert, mostly eaten at Christmas or other celebratory occasions. Love from Perth Western Australia xxx

Special place to check out is Corrobaree billabong on the Mary River up the top of the Northern Territory. Go in the middle of the Dry season, June- July hire a houseboat and spend 3 or 4 days in Saltwater Croc Central.
