A cricket ball is a hard, solid ball used to play cricket. A cricket ball consists of a cork core wound with string then a leather cover stitched on, and manufacture is regulated by cricket law at first-class level. They are 5.5 to 5.75 ounces (156- 163 grams).

You are right - the best way to play the ball is to keep watching the ball at ALL time untill it passes you. If you se almost all the cases are where the batsman has for a brief moment taken their eyes off the ball. In the old days without helmet batsmen getting hit was less because batsmen for self preservation kept their eyes on the ball.

Read up on Harold Larwood and Douglass Jardine in the "bodyline" series. Bodyline, also known as fast leg theory bowling, was a cricketing tactic devised by the English cricket team for their 1932-33 Ashes tour of Australia. It was designed to combat the extraordinary batting skill of Australia's leading batsman, Don Bradman. A bodyline delivery was one in which the cricket ball was bowled, at pace, at the body of the batsman in the expectation that when he defended himself with his bat a resulting deflection could be caught by one of several fielders standing close by on the leg side. Critics of the tactic considered it intimidating and physically threatening in a game that was traditionally supposed to uphold conventions of sportsmanship. The England team's use of the tactic was perceived by some, both in Australia and England, as overly aggressive or even unfair, and caused controversy that rose to such a level that it threatened diplomatic relations between the two countries before the situation was calmed.

Great to see an American enjoying cricket 😊 Cricket balls aren't that heavy, but they're solid as a rock, and with the speed some bowlers have, they can cause serious damage. Australian cricketer Phil Hughes was killed by a cricket ball. Terribly sad 😔

I think bouncers started in the bodyline series in the 30's when England got fed up with Sir Don Bradman hitting everything, then later in Kerry Packer's war in the 70's helmets were introduced. Used to only be test cricket but Kerry made huge innovations the 2 part miniseries show Howzat is good to watch.

"On 25 November 2014, [Phillip] Hughes was hit in the neck by a bouncer, during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, causing a vertebral artery dissection that led to a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The Australian team doctor, Peter Brukner, noted that only 100 such cases had ever been reported, with "only one case reported as a result of a cricket ball".[7] Hughes was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, where he underwent surgery, was placed into an induced coma and was in intensive care in a critical condition.[8] He never regained consciousness, and died on 27 November, three days before his 26th birthday."

We lost a great cricketer called Phillip Hughes on 27 November 2014 to a hit in the side of the neck. It caused the profile of helmets to be altered so that they had more coverage. BATSMEN have been getting hit in the head in cricket for years. But the impact to Phillip Hughes was very different. According to Australian team doctor Peter Brukner, the condition that caused Hughes’ death is “incredibly rare” happening only once before with a cricket ball. Brukner added that there were only 100 reported cases of the vertebral artery dissection Hughes suffered. “This was a freakish accident because it was an injury to the neck that caused a haemorrhage in the brain,” Brukner said. “The condition is incredibly rare. It’s called vertebral artery dissection leading to subarachnoid haemorrhage, if you look in the literature there are only about 100 cases ever reported.” Doctor Tony Grabs of St Vincent’s Hospital described the injury as “catastrophic”.

The ball is the hardest ball , from any sport . I'm not saying that to impress you , it's just a fact . You might think a golf ball is hard , well it's as hard as a golf ball but with a lot more mass. It's harder than a baseball (which is pretty hard) Honestly I've never encountered a harder ball . And they hurt dude , when you get hit by one , you understand the need for all the padding.

Helmets are difficult. The first generation (late 70’s) were pretty much motorcycle helmets but the batsmen hated the restrictive nature of them. Since then they’ve got lighter and possibly less protective. Still better than nothing which is all they had before. The cricketer who died copped one very similar to the one around the 3:00 minute mark in your video.

Viv Richards came from an era when no one wore helmets, so not really that extraordinary. It was first the bowling of Lilliee and Thomson and then the West Indies first quartet that started the process of developing helmets. It was a pretty funny image of Tony Greig facing up to Lillie in a motorbike helmet and taping it saying he was in good shape. The development of helmets really started at that point.

Also another thing is these bouncers are usually delivered for the explicit intent of disrupting the batsmen's rhythm. If the bowler could easily get a batter out, it's actually against the rules of the game to try injure them. If they on the other hand are hard to get out, bowlers are allowed to intimidate, try get them to shift their body weight and so on by bowling these bouncers. If a batter is worried about short balls, they are slower to play front foot shots because they hang their weight back. So it's a legit tactic to force a change in behaviour to try get someone out with the followup deliveries. Sometimes the bouncer itself can get a wicket if the batter tries to hit it and doesn't control where the ball goes.

Short-pitched fast bowling in general continues to be permitted in cricket, even when aimed at the batsman, and is considered to be a legitimate bowling tactic when used sparingly. Over time, several of the Laws of Cricket were changed to render the bodyline tactic less effective."

Bowling at the batsman was started during the "bodyline" series in 1932-33 where England played Australia. In cricket now the occasional ball is a bouncer. Back then it was over 50% of the balls bowled, and unlike now, the batsman did not wear helmets, and even less padding. The tactic was employed by the English vs Australia, and they referred to it as Fast Leg theory. The tactic was created primarily to stop the run scoring and get out, Australia's legendary batsman Don Bradman. It was within the rules at the time, and what was also controversial is the field that was set with this tactic. A field that would be against the rules now. More or Slightly more modern times you could see Jeff Thompson in the 1970s and The West Indies in the 1980s, and late 70s, but even then it was not as much as the bodyline series. You could also check out "Fire in Babylon". Many players have been injured in cricket and despite what people think its a rough sport. There have been a few Fatalities, with the most recent I am aware of Phil Hughes. It would be safe to say that while some fast bowlers actually bowl at the batsman very few want to see the batsman actually hit, although there are exceptions.

A couple of things here, I feel like I need to react to that you have said. Firstly a bouncer is generally NOT an illegal ball to bowl in cricket. A bouncer is a ball that bounces short on the pitch and rises to the batsman's head height. This is what makes cricket potentially dangerous. It is a tactical game and sometimes the bowler may actually try to hit the batsman with the ball. There is however a bit more detail here. Various forms of cricket may limit the number of bouncers bowled per over. Also there is a law that the umpire may warn the bowler if they keep bowling and hitting the batsman. This has changed in the history of cricket, as the umpire now can only warn the bowler if he bowls to many bouncers, whereas in the past it would be for anything that hits the batsman including in the ribs etc. After a bowler is warned then if he continues to bowl like that it can be deemed a no ball, and further he may be taken off bowling duties. This however seldom happens. The other thing is that what I am saying refers to bouncers, so in other words the ball must bounce. If the bowler bowls the ball on the full at the batsman, this is known as a beamer, and is illegal, and is automatically a no ball. Like throwing is illegal. The ball is harder then a baseball and slightly smaller, similar weight..
@MichaelHill-we7vt
@MichaelHill-we7vt Жыл бұрын
The ball is rock hard, a fast bowler can attain speeds in excess of 90mph.. you have a fraction of a second to react and either get the bat on it or get the hell out of the way...ANY batsman hit on the helmet is checked under concussion protocols, and if your helmet does take a hit, even if you are not in any way hurt, the helmet MUST be replaced immediately...it's a dangerous business facing a fast bowler......that is why the five day matches are called TEST matches...it IS a test, a test of your skill, tactics, patience strength and its also a test of your courage, I love my cricket, always have, but I dont love it enough to want to stand up to a fast bowler hitting speeds of 90-plus MPH....

As far as dirty bowlers, Neil Wagners main mode of dismissal is the bouncer. Lucky he is not express pace but his bouncer is accurate. Bowlers tactics depend on conditions. If there is pace and bounce in the wicket then the bowlers will often resort to short pitch bowling at the body and head once the ball loses its shine and stops swinging; but the main way bowlers get wickets is by aiming at the top of offstump which is the 1st stump closest to the bowlers hands when he is facing. This brings both the stumps and the catchers behind the wicket into play and also means the batsmen cannot leave it but also has minimum room for a powerful shot.

Bouncers - balls that bounce and are directed at the head are allowed. They used to be able to bowl as many of these as they liked and this was when batsmen did not wear helmets. Since 2012 a bowler is limited to 2 bouncers per over. If a batsman gets struck that is just bad luck, reason for this is that there are techniques in batting to avoid the ball as well as shots that can be played such as the hook shot.

3:12 Helmets are the same. Their primary job is obviously to protect the Batsman but they're design is selected also on the basis of mobility & visibility it provides to the Batsman. 3:24 Cricket Ball is slightly heavier & much harder than a Baseball but is slightly smaller too. 5:25 Helmets do have a lot of padding but to avoid restricting the mobility of the Batsman they don't cover the whole head. Same with Grills, if they prevent Batsman's visibility then they simply don't choose it. 6:45 Batsmen do wear a lot of protection, you can see a Batsman is more padded up than your baseballers but of course it's not enough when the Ball still manages to hit you hard. That's where the skills of the Batsmen comes in to skillfully hit the Ball or simply dodge it. 8:15 Well this is exciting. Most Cricket fans love watching Bouncers even if they hit the Batsman, we just don't like to see injuries. That's not something either the fans or the Bowlers bowling the Bouncers enjoy coz even the Bowlers aren't doing this to hurt the Batsmen but to scare them or rattle them up & lose focus. 12:21 I'm not surprised. Bowling is something you'll find no equivalent to in any other sport. You can make comparisons with Cricket Batting & Fielding but not Bowling, it's just a very different art & unique to Cricket.

There is no rule (law) against hitting the batsmen in the face. It is difficult for Americans coming from the sport of baseball to conceive how much the bouncer aimed at the body is a legitimate part of the game. The ball is bowled so it will hit the body and that includes the face. The onus is on the batsmen to either hit it or get out of the way. There are rules against the number of balls above waist height you can bowl in an over and balls over the head are considered wide (1 sundry or penalty run). There are also laws against intimidatory bowling. However, that is such a subjective construct and difficult to analyse within the ethos of the game that it is almost never used. So when the commentator says it was a good ball and it hit his face he is speaking to the tactic of bowling effectively so it forces the batsmen to play erratically.

In Americanese..The cricket ball weighs about 5 and a half ozs. it is leather bound with 6 lines of stitching on it..About the same size as a baseball, but certainly harder! Part of a fast bowlers job is to upset the batsmans concentration by intimidating him, by bowling at his body, and even hitting him if possible..it's quite legal to do this, provided it isnt overdone! Break a batsmans concentration, and you have a better chance of getting him out!

Thanks man. I love cricket, being an Aussie. I reckon hockey is more dangerous. Some wickets, pitches, are better for bouncers, some are better for spin. Many change from one to the other over a five day test. Bouncers can intimidate, but can also be belted if they're not spot on. Umpires might speak to a bowler if they bowled too many. Australia beat New Zealand once by bowling the last ball underarm! It stopped any chance of hitting a six. Not smart. Those cricket balls are hard.

There was a series in the 1940s where the competition between Australia and England was intense. The Poms introduced a brutal strategy called leg theory but the Aussies called it Bodyline because it was essentially persistent targeting of the batsmen's head and ribs. Many players were seriously injured because back then they didnt wear helmets. It was very controversial and Australians didnt think it was in the spirit of the game but the English Captain Harold Larwood was intent on winning at any cost. His main strike bowler Douglas Jardine became the most infamous bowler in the games history because of this effectiveness with this strategy. There was a movie made about this story and Hugo Weaving played the role of Larwood. This was also the era of Sir Donald Bradman who is essentially Australia's Babe Ruth. He still holds 4 records including his 'average runs per test match' of 99.94. To put that in context, the next best after Bradman is Steve Smith 63.24

The ball is harder than a baseball. It comes through slower of course as bowling with straight arm instead of a throw is a fair bit slower. The bounce does take off pace but remember you don't always know what the ball is doing when it bounces. Sometimes it bounces through fast, slow, high, low, to one side a bit or the other, or a combo of a few of these things. It often takes batters a period of getting used to how the pitch bounces. A modern 50 over or 20 over match usually has a "flat" pitch. One that doesn't have many surprises for the batters.

5:15 Yes you can "hit them in the face"... the bowler isn't strictly speaking trying to hit them in the face. The batsman in theory has had a lot of practice against these sorts of deliveries. Sometimes they aren't thinking about it and it surprises them just like a few you see here. That is why they say it's a "good delivery" because the bowler is trying to shake up the batsman to get them out. If all a bowler did was bowl ball after ball short, against top order batters this is quite easy to negotiate 99% of the time. These deliveries you are seeing a usually surprise short balls.

The rule is ..... rule 303 ( from Breaker Morant ). You got a bat, so use it. As long as the bowler DOES NOT over use the short ball , ( deliberate intimidation ), he is allowed to kill the batsman. In the past, good batsman wanted the short ball, it was easy runs..... 4 ‘s and 6’s. Those batsmen played without helmets. The English batsmen started wearing helmets in the mid 1970’s because of their fear of Jeff Thompson and Dennis Lillee. The West Indies had already lost Wes Hall to retirement, but gained Andy Roberts and Michael Holding, so everyone started wearing helmets......except for Viv Richards. Viv was the one batsman who defied his own mother and the insurance companies . In minor local grades of cricket some batsmen still refuse to wear helmets and some refuse to wear batting gloves. The gloves and helmets do make batting harder, but safer. Also..... the helmets must be light and the grill obscures your vision..... so the ball does sometimes penetrate the grill and always damages it. Even at local club level you can face a bowler at almost 100 mph ( 160 klm )...... even on melfoid and concrete pitches, called synthetic..... often covered with synthetic grass now, but sometimes not covered at all. The better batsmen find synthetic too easy...... is faster but the ball deviates less. On turf ( grass ) the ball deviates more left to tight, has an uneven bounce and can slide on quick, bounce higher but slower or even get held on the surface....... normal batsmen hate turf wickets because their are so many variables..... they are so much more difficult than the faster synthetic and concrete pitches.

Morne Morkel vs Michael Clarke springs to mind, for a barrage of bowling. Morkel seems very gentle off the field though. If you can react to part of an Amazon doco, there's great footage of one of the ones you've just seen though. Seriously, if you can, would be great for a reaction. And very insightful for you, contextually. The doco is The Test. And you'd want to react to part of the 2nd Test match at Lord's cricket ground. Might be on YT with a search - The Test Smith hit by Archer.

Bowlers get dirty if conditions supports them.... Bowlers get speed and bounce because conditions. Sometimes same Bowlers got punished by batsman. Cricket is all about conditions of pitch ground whether how to use new ball old ball ..etc Cricket team chose top 11 players or weapons based on conditions which can be used by captain to win 🏆

A regular 5.5 ounce cricket ball - used in all adult matches from village to international level cricket - is heavier, denser, and rock hard compared to a baseball, as well as having much sharper "seems" (stitches). If you get his by a cricket ball travelling at any kind of decent speed (70 to 90 mph), it really hurts. It will break bones if you're unlucky. Believe me! I was a semi-pro cricketer 30 years ago - a fast bowler - and even at my pace (more than 80 mph when I was young and fit) and I put three people in hospital with fairly serious injuries during my career. The worst incident was when I broke someone bloke's jaw with a bouncer. I freely admit now, that one was slightly malicious. I still hate batsmen, but I never wanted to put them in hospital on purpose (honest).

The dirtiest bowl in Cricket is when the bowler bowels a full toss ball directly at the head of the batsman... A full toss is when the ball does not bounce off the pitch.. It is very dangerous because the batsman is always looking for the ball to bounce off the pitch.. So they are never ready for a full toss to the head..

The cricket ball is heavier than a baseball but not quite as hard on the surface....... The natural leather is wrapped tightly around the core, but leather is soft enough to indent with a finger nail or bottle top, like the Pakistan bowlers do deliberately. lol

Literally every game comes down to 1 run it's literally how you win. I have no idea if you know because I don't know the extent of you knowledge of the sport but the objective of the sport in short is to reach the othe teams runs before your batsman are all out or before the set amount of overs are over. The game ends the second you get 1 run over the other teams runs, if you don't you lose and the othe side wins. Cricket has a weird concept were nobody is ever winning until they win. This is because the first batting side sets the score to reach, then after their innings the next side has to reach the other sides score and beat it by 1. so through their innings they are never winning, and the first batting side is not winning because they only set the score so they don't win unless the overs end and the score isn't reached or they get the other side all out.

For many years, cricket had the image of stuffy old retired army officers clapping politely while eating cucumber sandwiches on a sunny afternoon watching a gentlemanly game of cricket and occasionally saying "oh, damn fine shot , sir!!" which probably, thanks to Hollywood movies of the 40's and 50's , may have been true once upon a time..... but go to a T20 match today and see the crowds, the colour, and sample the excitement and the passion....... it aint like the old Hollywood image any more........

Mostly though Bouncers are a Tactic to encourage the batsman to not get too cheeky, and to correct their behaviour when they do. So Its the art of making reckless play happen by shattered batsmen who feel attacked.

I wouldn't call him dirty, but the meanest bowler IMO was West Indies' Andy Roberts from the 1970s. In those days there was no limit on number of balls above shoulder-height a bowler could bowl in an over, ansd if Roberts was in a bad/dangerous mood , then I think if he had his way he'd bowl 8 bouncers in a 6 ball over!
