Having played Baseball, I find watching it a complete slog. Watching Cricket, you just never know what is going to happen next. So exciting. I love Cricket.

Most people who have played cricket can find the slowest games of ball versus bat to be absorbing..... but not everyone does. lol I enjoy watching a batsman surviving against top class bowling..... top class fast bowling is always exciting and dangerous. Top class spin bowling can bore people to death, but when you understand the game, it is thrilling to watch a master spinner destroy the mind of a good batsman, but the batsman fights for survival and refuses to get out. No runs are scored, or very few, but the batsman survives, and the bowler keeps finding new tricks to succeed.... get him out. At club level it is boring unless you are involved in the game yourself. At test match level...... it is like 2 chess masters in a stalemate, but both playing brilliantly. The bowler making the ball talk. Changing the ball speed to confuse the batsman’s timing. Setting a trap and then springing it with accurate bowling and turn ( spin) but the batsman keeps the ball out with determination and lightening reflexes. Sometimes the ball takes an edge and the batsman should be caught out...... but he relaxes his hands and bat grip to remove the energy from the ball , causing the ball to drop short of slips, do no catch. Next time, the batsman is beaten again , but this time he tightens his grip and flicks his wrist as the ball takes the edge, causing the ball to fly upwards and fast beating the keeper and the flips fielder..... 4 runs. Absorbing stuff that many fans hate.... they only want to see wickets, runs, great fielding and blood on the pitch. lol

When they throw it back they are saving from been an automatic 4/6. Since in cricket every rum counts.

Yeah, you’re right, so the last 3 weren’t out because they weren’t complete catches, but they saved runs. If you catch the ball but the momentum causes you to touch the boundary line or go over it, it’s 6 and not out, that’s why they were releasing the ball back onto the field before they touched the rope or the ground behind the rope. But if you catch it and then throw the ball to someone else without touching the boundary line or going over it, then it’s out because the catch has been completed by the second guy without it touching the ground, that’s what happened in the 4th one, that’s why it was so good, because he caught it and then threw it 30 metres to the other guy before he touched the ground to get the batsman was out

Boundary used to be the fence, but too many fielders crashed into it so now we have a rope.

I'm with you on baseball. Even being aware of the fact that not every sport is for every one, I really don't know how people can watch it. Cricket, especially the One-Day version, pretty much gets and keeps my attention from first ball to the last. Unfortunately (possibly), I never get time to watch a test match. Doubt I could sit through those 4-5 days.

Baseball is not bad bad it's just the game is very slow at times for me. With cricket it's let's goooo bowl and maybe 20 second later another bowl. In baseball you got to spit scratch look around adjust then pitch lol.

When they catch it and throw it back (before touching the boundary or the ground) then it is not a catch, they have just stopped the ball from going for a boundary ie 4 or 6.To be a catch it has to be taken within the field of play - so when they throw it up, leave the field of play and then return to the field of play to regather, that is a fair catch and out.

@@CVTECK1 I know what you mean! I love sports too but haven't invested the time to learn some indepth. Like, I've enjoyed learning volleyball more thoroughly of late but I'm invested because my partner plays. You kind of want that connection, which I imagine youtube comments provide in spades. Of the big "American sports" I know best, it's basketball, but the connection there comes from having a strong and influencial local team (Perth Wildcats - they're a juggernaut!). Baseball a fair bit too (Perth Heat). But we don't have serious American Football or Ice Hockey teams, which are the other big ones, so my interest always wanes a little when I switch them on. Speaking of local teams! There's some bigger American cricket teams now, if that helps connect you. The American national team are taking big strides recently. They were reeeeally awful for a long time because, well, a lack of American interest for starters. But also, I seem to remember there were serious governance issues maybe 20 years ago and they were disbarred or something from the international governing body (the ICC) for a while, so they've been stunted and it's taken them a long time to make gains. But they're up to a world ranking of 18th now, sitting in League 2 for One Day International matches (the league below the top league - the "Super League"). They haven't got the status to play Test matches - only 12 countries do though. But the USA does play International T20s (world rank 26 currently) AND are co-hosting the 2024 T20 World Cup, so they've autoqualified for that already. Most matches will be in The Carribean, but the USA's co-hosting portion I thiiiink will be in Vegas. There's actually 2 new franchise teams as well... but they don't really light my fire. New York and Morrisville (for some reason). They play Ten-10 cricket, which is a short and lucrative Mickey Mouse version of cricket, played in the middle east over a few weeks a year. Naturally, there's no American players in these teams, everyone is an international hired mercenary, and some I doubt would have even been to the place their franchise is named for. But hey, there's an American link there, even if it's just financial investment or something. Both teams did very well in their first season recently too.

The reason why they're called 'efforts' in general, is that they don't necessarily turn into wickets, for the most part they just save runs. So throwing your body at a ball after chasing it at 100% and saving only one run, turning a four into a three, is a great effort. Putting an effort in is drilled into you as a junior. The commentators celebrating those 'catches' over the boundary line, were not celebrating a wicket, they were celebrating the catch to stop the six and in turn saving a couple of runs. A good effort is rewarded by cricket crowds around the world. And a poor effort, even if its the home player, is panned/mocked/heckled which leads to redemption arcs for some players.

@Simmo87

Yes indeed, those ones you are asking about are not complete catches. The batter isn't out and they can run. But probably way less than 6, so those fielding efforts are very valuable to the team. The rule, more of less, says for the catch to be "complete" (in American) the player must have control of the ball and of his/her body. Falling spectacularly over the boundary is not controlling the body.. so, bad luck fielders. I think I've seen you maybe watch some AFL content before? It's different there, which is unintuitive to Americans. There's no body control stipulation for that sport to constitute "completed" marks (catches), just ball control.

With #3 the law for catching is the player much demonstrate having complete control of the ball. In this case it will be rule as not a catch. But the ball will still be in play/live. By in play the batters can still choose to run and make runs or they could get out. Getting back to catching one of the common ways to demonstrated control is to trow the ball in the air or straight to the ground. Keep up the interest in cricket. There is a world cup around the corner coming up

If they catch it and immediately throw it back in bounds its not an out (or official catch) They do it to save the runs making a split second decision and realizing that they cant get the out but may as well save the runs.

@@CVTECK1 when you're batting on your cricket game keep your bat straight towards the bowler but on a slight angle leaning forward.so when you hit it you hit it into the ground only go for a big swing if it's not directly at your wickets.that way you won't get bowled or caught hopefully.just turn your bat handle where you want to hit it and push it rather than swing until you get your timing down then you can swing more freely hopefully when the bowlers get tired.try and get your front foot up where the ball bounces and push your bat right next to it that way hopefully the ball won't get through just a few tips to hopefully get you a few runs🇳🇿😉👍

@11:11 it's not called a "complete catch" but I get what you mean. n cricket it's called controlling the ball when catching. A famous incident happened in a World Cup years ago; South African Herschelle Gibbs thought he had caught Aussie skipper Steve Waugh and when to throw the ball in the air to celebrate but dropped it, and the umpires ruled he didn't control the ball. Waugh sledged Gibbs with "You just dropped the World Cup" and it turned out to be true. SA lost the match & were eliminated while Aussie went on to win the tournament.
