In the middle of Deftones' "dark days," the band delivered an album so dense that they later distanced themselves from it.

My favorite deftones album... Still remember being in a dark place myself when i listened to this album over and over again... Getting up, skating down the long ass road i used to live at , smoking that devils lettuce like a chimney with my cousins, trying to find a purpose... opening up with hexagram puts you instantly in the mood for wrecking shit/jamming

This was the first full Deftones album I listened to. I was about 12 or 13 and was still discovering my tastes in music but from the moment Hexagram kicked off until the end last lick of Moana, I was blown away... I vividly remember listening to the album on repeat after that first initial play.

I was 18 when that album came out. Preordered it at my local record store. I remember the day. I walked to the record store instead of driving, came home and listened to it beginning to end on my front porch and was blown away. There’s very few days in my life that I remember in such detail.

I've always loved Deftones but I only really listened to this album for the first time going through an incredibly rough breakup, I had turned to drugs, alcohol, and anything else I could get my hands on to get through it. This album was on, every waking minute of that year, truly a beautiful piece of work.

An artist's work should only be recieved exactly as it's given, take it or leave it. I remember hearing a track I really liked on the Matrix soundtrack. Learning it was a group 'Deftones' I bought their nrw album 'White Pony' at Tower Records in Hollywood. That night I had a new favorite band to this day and 'til I die.

I remember when both St Anger and Deftones came out. I liked both at the time (I remember my gf at the time telling me that I was the only one she knew of that liked St Anger), but I liked Deftones more and it has stood the test of time. I still listen to it, while I don't think I've listened to St Anger since the mid 00's.

Per your question regarding Chino and Frank being in Seattle, the reason was the rest of the band felt they were comfortable with their parts, and so chino and frank went to Seattle to finish vocal layers, additional guitar and keys and atmosphere and frank was a big part of that record being in sequence they way it was due to then fine tuning everything so well.

I bought this the week it came out but couldn't get into it for years. I'm not sure why. I think it was the production or the fact that it had such a different writing style, lyrics and sound. But in retrospect I think this is actually one of their best albums start to finish.

I remember doing a run through of their discography in high school and I didn’t really like this one on the first listen. I already loved Minerva, Hexagram and Good Morning Beautiful but it took a bit for me to come around to tracks like Uninteresting Event, Lucky You and Deathblow (something about Chino’s voice cracking in the chorus I didn’t like on first listen). One of my better relisten experiences for an album.

Anniversary is my all time favorite tune. It makes me think of losing my loved ones, mainly my mom and grandma. Not a significant other necessarily. The water theme keeps coming back though, in waves, pun intended, when i hear digtal bath and sextape. High on the crest and crashing below while remembering embracing and yearning for Tonight, in the moment. Anything after is regaining strength and moving on. Cleansing of soul.

I always read Hexagram as about the interplay between audience and band during a concert. It's chaotic, potentially even violent; an intense communal experience like a religious gathering; a playful experience; a cycling of emotions and memories both positive and negative ("the camera makes you seasick" "your parents are proud", "god I trust everyone").
@SteelRims

I love how Chino's guitar playing style is based on electronic sampling. It doesnt sound like a rhythm or lead guitar. Its something way too different from Stephen Carpenter's heavy riffage. It rides on what Steph is doing without cutting through it.

I know it’s impossible for them as a band to truly appreciate it due to the struggles of the times, but if Chino especially could view it the way I do as sonically the best representation of showing of the HUM influences (heavy multitracked guitars and washed out droning vocals etc) I think he’d at least understand why some of us still adore this disc

Hey, man, I appreciate your channel and share your love for Deftones. Older fan here, so it was interesting hearing your dad's take on the band, 'cause I presume he and I are the same generation, grew up on Nirvana and Seattle sound and the music of the 90s. Deftones tho, my favorite band from the era after grunge, along with Mogwai and a few other greats. I follow Deftones from Adrenaline, and I always felt every record is even better than the last, but don't get me wrong: every one of their albums deserves the deep dive and attention of any audiophile who likes different in the realms of heavy, but melodic too, and much much more. For me - they never put out sh... material, whatever anyone thinks, that's my opinion. Greetings from Europe. If you want, check out my channel Balkan Secrets, there are a few interviews that could interest you or your old man. Cheers and keep doing deep dives.
