a lot of times when a band bends or redefines a genre the genre they used to be categorized as, the word post- gets added. so like post-rock or post-metal. except post gets added to everything eventually.

Exactly my experience with White Pony after it came out. A friend of mine moved to the middle of nowhere at that time, about an hour away from me. I drove to her house many times at night and left early in the morning. I remember loving how there was nothing out there along that route and no cars on the road. It was strangely comforting, knowing I was alone, and that road belonged to me while listening to this album.

The song is about an abuse of power in a romantic relationship. He’s picked a girl manipulated her into what he wants but the girl doesn’t see it as abusive and being with him makes her feel alive. “ I pulled off your wings, I laughed” - pulled her ability to leave him and her sense of self “ I watched a change in you, it’s like you never had wings”- shes now devoted to Him and he’s manipulated her into being what he wants “ you feel so alive ..I watched you change” - she feels alive with him she needs him to survive and he’s enjoyed watching and manipulating her going from an independent person full of promise to his devoted play thing. “ you’re on fire”- now he thinks she’s sexy and hot because he’s made her into his devoted “ perfect woman” Look at the cross Gave you a gun blow me away- he’s saying he knows he’s done wrong and the fact he’s changed her and when it comes to it, his day of judgement the fact he’s destroyed her will be the ultimate decisions on if he goes heaven or hell.

This is a golden age for music culture, this channel represents that perfectly. Metalheads and hip hop heads interacting and appreciating all genres of music. I'm glad people are looking at music for what it is, just music. Art can be expressed in many forms, no reason to limit yourself to one form. The first band I got into was Linkin Park (who blended metal, rap, and eventually pop) so seeing this is awesome. Keep up the amazing work guys.

Dustin Myers - That's also my interpretation or the feeling I always got from it. A person with evil intentions is changing someone for the worse and stealing their innocence and purity. The evil person gets joy from it but once the change is complete the evil person looks at the cross and feels guilty and hands the victim the gun because the evil person now feels sick about what they've done and wants to die. I may be wrong but it's definitely an awesome song that's dark, twisted, and unsettling.
@lucasargandona46586 жыл бұрын

@GlaciusTS6 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was sexual, using metaphors for dominance play. Pulling off the wings could be interpreted as undressing and restraining someone, laughing is a power move. Looking away from the cross could be seen as rebellion or simply implying that what he’s about to do is bad, and yno... the gun is his penis, he presents it to his restrained partner and asks to be “blown away”. At least that’s what I got from it. Lots and lots of sexual stuff.
@Iamabum215 жыл бұрын

Chino Moreno: "It's a metaphorical song. You could take it in the literal sense of me watching someone turn into a fly and taking them home with me and pulling of their wings and laughing. It spawns from me being a complete a--hole and getting the complete repercussion for it by having my life taken away."

im 46, love and listen to all kinds of music. any and all genres. Been to hundreds of shows/concerts. Deftones is on my long list of fave bands of all time. One of the most unique bands ever from a tonal/sonics point of view. The songwriting is as deep and complex as you could ever ask for. Their musicianship is accomplished and fluid. Really dynamic music that will test any audio system's dynamic range and bring all but the best subwoofer setups to their knees keeping up with the resonances in the recordings. The seductive way Chino backs off, teasing and daring the mic to even hear him as the band drops into soft melodies, then suddenly they explode with a massive wall of crushing riffs and drums beating your brains in always made me think of some evil 50's starlet enticing me around a corner into the path of a war machine that i then have to flee from..The only bad thing about Deftones is I can't turn them up enough to fit how bone crushing they can sound..... the volume knob always runs outta gas... I was lucky enough to see them at a college bar not long after Around the Fur dropped. I was in my 20's. My buddy spotted Chino (lead singer) playing Galaga alone so we went over and said hello, told him we dug his music alot, usual fan shit. In spite of him telling us he was pissed off at the band and didnt wanna be backstage with them at the time, he was still cool as hell to us. Offered to sign our tix stubs and chatted with us like we were bro's till he ran outta time and had to go get ready to play their set.. ... They came out and blew the doors off the place. I saw alot of shows there over the years and this was the only one where I saw someone plant their foot on the ceiling. Pit was going full on donkey kong apeshit. Insane energy..........Couldnt tell there was any kinda rift going on with them. Total professionals. There was a dude that anchored himself in the front of the crowd and was singing every word at Chino thru the whole set like he wrote it all... Every now and then Chino would point the mic at him and let him do a line or two... Rock N Roll bad assery to the fullest.... Saw em 3 or 4 other times over the years. Always a good show.

@PhoenixXZY6 жыл бұрын
Around the Fur for a more aggressive, rap/metal sound. Diamond Eyes has more of their "commercial", easy to listen to riffs (Which, I'm not saying is a bad thing). I feel like, if these guys were to listen to anything from the self-titled album, that their opinions might change slightly...that album is one of my favorites because of its intensity...but it is much different than White Pony. The next song I'd like to see these guys react to, however, would have to be Leathers from Koi No Yokan. That song is powerful and catchy AF.
@19ThreeLions976 жыл бұрын

Passenger should be your next Deftones song, for sure. Also, check out A Perfect Circle - "Pet" or "The Outsider". I think you will dig them if you like this style.

Or the package or the hollow, or the outsider. Is it just me or does a perfect circle have a lot of songs that start with "the" in the title. Honestly I want to hear what they think of "the doomed"..

@matthew myers Haha, it's not just you. My favorite APC song is The Noose (love the drum part).

I love how y'all headbang and vibe EXACTLY how I do. You guys re excite me with my favorite music. We got the same style for sure. Chino is a tortured soul and it's why he's so appealing. I love how you guys interpret music. Deftones are genius, my favorite band of all time.
@Gods_Fury1016 жыл бұрын
So think of the change as in personality, he took an “innocent” girl home laid coke on the glass “pulled off her wings(angel)” and then laughed because he knew what he had done. It’s fairly straight forward. Chino was wild and everywhere lyrically but still up to interpretation.
@TheCivildecay5 жыл бұрын
Chino said this song was about being a horrible person and destroying something beautifull. I always thought it was about falling in love with a girl , and then manipulating/controlling her into a miserable being during the relationship. (like taking her wings/freedom away)

🤜🤛 you get it. Taking an angel (innocent girl) and showing her the dark side and sitting back and watching her evolve into something else.

No joke I happened to meet the producer/engineer Terry Date right as they were finishing this album. The buzz was immediate as we got a sneak peek and it was not much but you could feel something big was happening and it lit up record shelves around Hollywood. It still sounds and is great all these years later. R.I.P. Chi

Started listening to Deftones when I was 13 when their first album dropped and my parents were not happy, then Around the Fur came out and my pastor father and my piano playing mom at church really liked it! Especially Be quiet and Drive.
