I’ve played this song for years and love it. One thing I’ve been trying to improve is the vocal effects. What’s your set up for vocals? You just about nailed the Chino sound. You always seem to do Deftones really well. Thanks! Love your channel btw.

Thanks so much! I tried to really get the production techniques right in terms of layering vocals. There's the main vocal that runs throughout the whole song. Choruses are double tracked and the "numb" harmony is double tracked as well. 1) My voice is naturally a lot more scooped in the midrange than Chino's so I've got a healthy amount of mid/high mid boost going on from around 1K to 5K and not much low end content. 2) Deftones usually have a very upfront & stereo vocal sound, so I'm hitting the vocals with Gain Reduction from Joey Sturgis Tones which is a really aggressive compressor and works great in a rock/metal context I find. For the stereo spread effect, I'm using the MicroShift from SoundToys which does a great emulation of the old Eventide H3000/Rockman Chorus effect. There's some 1/4 note delay in there as well from SoundToys Echoboy. 3) For the doubled vocal that comes in at the chorus, I'm distorting the 2nd vocal and EQing it almost like an aggressive megaphone sound. Just makes for a thicker sound that's a bit closer to the original track. Was thinking about doing a little mix breakdown video if anyone was interested, but I'm sure I have a bunch of weird techniques that pros would shake their heads at haha.

Deleted my previous comment haha. Great job, man. I've been obsessed with trying to get the ATF tone for like, oh..... 20 years. I've finally got it bc of a happy accident with Neural DSP "Nolly." The reason I mention that, is bc I am familiar with what it takes to do what you did with this video. You took a legendary vocal performance and made it your own while still honoring it. Your tone and performance is spot-on, and as I previously mentioned, you alone managed to accomplish what an entire band couldn't. And the amazing Loomis plug-in to boot!

I ended up making it sound like a tri-chorus, and I have no clue what it's modeled after irl. Driving me crazy. It's helping me get some Hum "Downward is Heavenward" vibes as well.

Thanks so much! Yeah, plug-ins are digital recording tools that you would use when recording music into a computer. Everything from EQ's to Compressors, Guitar Amps, Bass Amps, etc. They're often emulations of real-world, physical pieces of gear. For this video, I'm using a guitar amp & bass amp sim from Joey Sturgis Tones. The guitar amp is the signature plugin from Jeff Loomis (Nevermore, Arch Enemy, Sanctuary, Conquering Dystopia) and to my ears, it's modeled after a Mesa Dual Rectifier and an EVH 5150 III. The bass amp sim is the signature plugin form Rex Brown (Pantera). So yep, no real amps in this video. I love real amps, but when it comes to recording, there are tons of options to get great sounds. I don't think the pros can argue with the results - it sounds good, it is good! Personally, I would totally dig a tutorial on these production techniques. It sounds so good.
