I was the art director for this ride, the later Jimmy Neutron ride and parts of Jetsons The Movie. You’ve left out a lot of really interesting history for this ride. If you are interested in doing an update, I’d be happy to share my experiences of the key contributors, the trials and tribulations and the animation milestones that made this an historical attraction. Also I have a digital master from the original negative.

I remember seeing this at the Mall of America location! It was shown on their Mystery Mine Ride when the park was still called Camp Snoopy. Eventually, the film was switched over to Spongebob Squarepants 3D before the ride itself was removed from the park. After the Peanuts license ended, the park changed to the Park at MOA for a time, before becoming Nickelodeon Universe. The 4d theater was removed, and now has Spongebob Rock bottom plunge in its place. I only saw the film once in its runtime, but hearing about it again makes me so happy. Love the video!
@ChristopherSobieniak7 жыл бұрын
Doesn't surprise me it was easy to keep the ride film alive outside one park like that.
@JeffreyPiatt7 жыл бұрын
It was less loss of license than loss of operation. Ceder fair dropped the park due to the mall not advertising out of state enough. With that park dropped the snoopy characters could finally make it to valley fair one of the first parks to join ceder fair.
@ChristopherSobieniak7 жыл бұрын
I suppose Cedar Fair worked better with outdoor theme parks than with shopping malls. Interesting if the Mall of America has became that unimportant.
@JeffreyPiatt7 жыл бұрын
This was one of the 3 parks that Ceder fair closed after buying from Viacom the Paramount Parks and assumed there debt. that was not helped by being so soon after gerugia lake being bought from six flags that had to be scrubbed of WB/DC branding late in the parks summer break and half the park had to be shuttered year one as CF did not run zoo's and did not reopen until they decided to clone Dorney parks Wildwater kingdom water park on the seaworld side. the purge of unprofitable parks ended up being Knott's Camp Snoopy in MOA [2005 closed to be renovated the contract dissolved in 2006], Geauga Lake (Closed ride side in 2007, the water park, Wildwater Kingdom, closed on September 5, 2016), and Star Trek: The Experience ( closed in 2006 to low attendance, Cedar Fair lost rights to reopen the attraction from CBS Studios in 2010) they also had to sell off two Knott's Soak City water parks before recovering.

Batman And Robin: The Chiller. Premiere launch coasters everywhere, including 4 complete circuit types similar to one and other, all got the same change out of shoulder harness to lap bar, work great. Later 2 mr. freeze reverse blasts, work just fine, and way bigger. Now they use a different launch with all the sky rocket II clones and full throttle, but what was the issue and why couldn't it have been fixed? I miss it, liked it better than Kingda Ka, had more than one element (or as some argue, more than 2), went backwards, and two sides.

Shark Man Like say rides from Six Flags New Orleans. Because I would like to see him cover Spongebob The Ride.
@AdamSmith-gs2dv7 жыл бұрын
OneAndOnlySound The issue was with the launch tech. BM&R used Linear Induction Motors (LIMs) to launch the trains which are essentially giant versions of what heats the toast in your toaster. The issue is that LIMs need a ton of power to work and since this coaster dualed it used twice the amount of power as the other Premier clones (this is why they only ran the Robin side along with staffing issues). Also these LIMs where prone to overheating and breaking as well which resulted in lots of down time. The final nail in the coffin for this ride was a derail in 2006 which caused the removal of the zero g rolls however this didn't fix it and the coaster derailed again in 2007 and SF decided to cut losses and remove it. This ride along with it's Mr Freeze sisters are why manufacturers no longer use LIMs for launch coasters instead relying on Linear Synchronous Motors (LSMs) and Hydraulic launches which use a lot less power and don't suffer as much down time. Also BM&R actually hasn't been scrapped, it's now in Brazil however it has yet to be reassembled.

Nice review of a ride that lasted a long time and was mostly operated with few issues. Very true it shared the same technology with Back to the Future when the park originally opened - biggest difference is that the animation was much easier to put together than the short film needed for Back to the Future to work (using models and other effects to make it work). Growing up in Florida in the late 1980s this park (Universal Studios: Florida) was an interesting alternative to Disney World. Today, with the modernization of the park it is a far more formidable competitor to those earlier days (notwithstanding the continued existence of ET the ride). When that goes, the oldest ride left I believe will be Terminator 2.

I worked at King Island for 2 years! So when the park opened in 1972, Hanna-Barbera was part of the park I still had guests asking questions on when yogi bear was going to come out and if the smurf ride was up and running. I actually remember this ride as the very first ride I ever went on at Universal Studios (Fl) when I was a kid. I am so glad I am just old enough to have experienced it and remember it. It was one of my favorites :)

I rode this at Universal in 1999. I loved (and still love) simulator rides to this day because of this and Star Tours. I remember, vaguely I might add, the after ride game room where you had the computer screens that let you animate, add sound to, and control various scenes from classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Until around 10 years ago I was able to ride this again at Dollywood, another favorite theme park. It was still fun, but didn't contain any of the interactive animated studio for the after ride entertainment.

Not gonna lie, when I was a kid Hanna-Barbara Land at Canada's Wonderland (the only theme park I've ever been able to go to) was one of my favourite places.

I’m a huge Disney fan but, also a student of it’s history and the history of theme parks! I learned some things from your videos.

If next season any of the original Hanna-Barbera land stuff comes up from kings island... Smurfs (killer dark ride), the yogi bear anamorphic animals and flinstones I remember as a kid. Crazy to see that they ended up back at kings island during a time period where I didn’t visit the park, also to add crazy connections, Hanna-Barbera land was replaced by Nickelodeon at Kings Island in the paramount years. Looking forward to defunct land in 2018

I just came here to mention the Hanna Barbera/Kings Island connection. I never liked roller coasters but when you live 2 hrs away, you went to KI. The Smurfs ride had been one of my faves and honestly I was sad when it went. There's not even a Wiki entry on it, which blows my mind. I'm old enough to remember attending what was then called "Water Works" when it was newly opened...well before KI started changing names and animated properties.

I spent almost this whole video with a mix of nostalgia and confusion because I distinctly remember some of these images but didn't visit Universal before it closed down but after you said it, I remembered that I had saw it at Kentucky Kingdom. Great video as always!

Defunctland makes my day every single time a new episode is out, excited for 2018's new batch of defunct rides! Season 2 can we get Haunted Castle in Great Adventure, N.J? there's a huge story of internal incompetence and hazard ending in tragedy the likes of which are bordering on Action Park levels of criminal negligence- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_Castle_(Six_Flags_Great_Adventure)

I've just binge-watched every video you've put up here. I've never been outside of Europe, let alone to a theme park out there. I'm fascinated by the rides that have come and gone, even though I never had a chance to try them when they were operating. Thanks for putting them online for everyone to see. Even though some are dated as you rightly pointed out, like BTTF (where is my hover car?) I'm grateful that you have. I look forward to seeing more from Defunctland in the future.

I think there are other reasons to why the ride eventually closed down ,some of them being these (although two are just theories of mine): 1-According to its Wikipedia article, some Universal representatives saw that,around 1998,the ride was becoming less popular, (supposedly) of guests not caring about Hanna Barbera cartoons anymore , and Universal saw this as a sign to reimagine the theme and brand of the attraction with a more contemporary animated IP ; thus entering conversations with Nickelodeon and leading to the creation of Jimmy Neutrons Nicktoon Blast. 2-The fact that,in 1996 ,Time Warner and Turner (wich at the time owned Hanna Barbera,and in essence it would later be passed to Warner Bros) merged together might could've been an indicator to Universal that they had to pay extra fees to license the brand in their park,and they probably saw it as just not worth it. 3-The passing of William Hanna in 2001,just one year before the ride close ; it could've been done to respect him or....just because he died,I dunno. As always ,great video and I hope I see more of Defunctland in 2018! Keep on with the amazing work!
@Tornado19946 жыл бұрын
Turner and Time Warner Merged on January 13,1997. Universal had been trying to strengthen its relationship with Ted Turner and Joe Barbera and Bill Hanna for years. The Early 1992 launch of Cartoon Network as well as Turner's SUCCESSFUL Bid of Hanna Barbera from dying Worldvision/TAFT Spelling,Inc in 1990 shocked them to the core. Universal and Time Warner's relationships with each other had begun to sour by late '97 anyway.

Great series Kevin. I've really enjoyed these can't can't wait for season 2. I remember this ride well as a kid. I remember thinking it was much better than back to the future where the rows of cars spoiled the illusion for me (plus I'd never aspen back to the future so had no idea who any of the characters were).

I LOVE this show, and the attractions you highlight. I even asked for you to cover this attraction in one of the previous episode's comments, but I will not credit myself for you covering it. I EAGERLY look forward to the upcoming episodes you feature here. And, lastly, I sincerely hope they NEVER remove the E.T. Encounter at Universal Orlando. I live in Orlando, and it is one of my most favorite rides, and has some of my fondest memories. May it never close it's doors. : ) Thank you sir!
