Not sure why the Hanna-Barbera characters' popularity were declining in the late 90's when they're still remembered by the masses to this very day.
@melasnexperience5 жыл бұрын
Raphael Marquez I wonder if it’s cuz the majority of their catalog was only being used as stock footage or parody by the Adult Swim crew. They’ve kind of poisoned the well for using those series again (for instance, the comic reviving their action shows had a bunch of people in reviews & on places like TV Tropes complaining they weren’t referencing Space Ghost Coast to Coast or doing a Venture Bros prequel), and as someone who likes H-B’s stuff, it’s kind of annoying.
@caferreri115 жыл бұрын
Well yes and no. Obviously if kids today watch the Boomerang app, they'll be acquainted with the H-B characters, but from a marketing standpoint, they really don't measure up to characters like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny or Snoopy, which is why you don't see them being licensed for much in the way of merchandise or theme park attractions. Outside of Pebbles Cereal or Flintstones vitamins, or the Jellystone Campgrounds, you don't see H-B characters get much attention these days (Scooby-Doo is really the only exception).

Hanna-Barbera also produced a series of 33-1/3 LPs around 1965. They had the HB characters of the time, and would sometimes mix them with real life actors from popular TV shows at the time. Like Bill Dana as his Jose Jimenez Astronaut character travelling thru time and meeting The Flintstones. Or The Flintstones or Jetsons and some weird society name with lots of S's and Q's about preserving Barber Shop Quartets. My Uncle in LA worked either worked for HB or was a sales rep for these records and mailed us a box of around 32 or so of these albums in December 65.

This was a great ride. It also illustrates the one bad thing about Universal Studio’s. They mainly use licensed third party IP. Which means for pretty much any given ride, it’s going to eventually be closed and refurbed into something else entirely different. The rides seemingly have 10 year life cycles where Universal decides if it’s worth renewing. Disney has a small amount of this, mostly in Hollywood Studios (the reason Great Movie Ride closed. Also Rockin Rollercoaster is licensed.) But most of what they have they own outright and don’t have to renegotiate every few years. So they can decide to keep centerpiece classics without the licensing complications. (How much of Universal is Disney owned IP’s now, since the Fox merger?)
@michaelbednar73015 жыл бұрын
The only IPs in the Universal Studios parks owned by Disney are Marvel & The Simpsons. But from all accounts, the Marvel contract is basically permanent as long as they maintain the attractions & continue to include these characters in the park. Whether the contract for The Simpsons is the same is unknown. Universal has plenty of attractions based on licensed IPs though; however, they benefit from most of the licensers not having their own U.S. theme parks, or at least on the level of Universal / Disney...think Paramount owned Kings Landing at one point in time (if they don't still) but its not like they could build a ride like Transformers.
@andrewtaylor9405 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbednar7301 I think the Marvel license is for 100 years if I remember correctly? So yeah effectively permanent. As it predates Disney owning Marvel. Not sure on the Simpsons? But Universal's literal centerpiece theme Harry Potter is Warner Brothers. That might be an issue as Comcast NBC Universal goes head to head with AT&T Warner Brothers in the streaming wars. Universal just announced their NBC Peacock service.

I even remember humming the Mission: Impossible theme loudly while pretending to shoot at Dick and Muttley during the ride, and my mom had to calmly lecture me that I cannot be loud in motion simulators because they have the same rules as movie theatres. 16:14 That is actually kinda sorta inaccurate. The ride didn't get replaced by Spongebob 4D because it was already existing in the same theater on the other side. All the Paramount Parks had 2 motion simulator theaters in the same building, originally their first two incarnations had the same film played on both sides to help with capacity, but by the 2000's they had separate films playing inside both theaters. When Cedar Fair bought the Paramount Parks, the second theaters were decommissioned for seemingly unknown reasons, leaving the side that already had Spongebob to begin with open. So HB didn't get replaced by Spongebob, it just shut down basically. I know this because I have been visiting Great America during the Paramount days, and yes I have been on the HB ride when it was there.
