Dehumidifier turning on but not working, troubleshooting and fix

Symptoms: The dehumidifier would turn on, then after 2 of three minutes the unit would shut off. Turns out only the fan was turning on at all, the compressor was never kicking on.
Solution: Unplug the humidistat sensor connection to the circuit board located behind the rear metal plate inside the outer paneling.

Thanks a lot for your video. You and your references deserve a prize for sustainability! How many de-humidifiers have been fixed thanks to you? I just fixed an old one I had and was going to get rid of. It’s a Zenith, it had lasted 2 years and had the same symptoms you describe. But that was 9 years ago, so we had bought a new one (Frigidaire). It lasted 8 years. I checked it but it looks like the compressor is failing. Turns on but barely makes cold. So I decided to look at the old one. I disconnected the potentiometer wire from the circuit board, based on your suggestion, and it worked! But would have been continuous operation (The temperature control was still working). The humidity setting was manual, with a knob attached to a small potentiometer. There was a label B50K on that potentiometer. I was able to find one online (~ 3$ + shipping), and replaced the old one. Reconnected it to the circuit board. Works like new! Thanks again.

no it was totaled, I had to swim out to the boat you see in the background in my drysuit. When we came back to shore in his dingy to collect my belongings the bear tried to charge us but he fired a shotgun in the air to scare it off. I think it had gotten habituated to finding food at the remote cabin by people not disposing of their fish carcasses correctly. :/ anyway sailboat folks gave me a ride back to town and the company gave me a new kayak after this went viral so it all turned out okay :)

So you could do what the video says as a fix, but a more stable one would be to see if the company has a replacement circuit board for the humidity sensor.

This put me in the right direction, however it was my humidity sensor. For some reason it reads the humidity on the digital display as being higher than the setting I have it on, but it wasn't kicking in. When I unplugged it, it says "E1" but then the compressor and fan kick in. I wonder if one of the 4 wires has a break in the circuit maybe, since the sensor seems to be working, it just won't activate the unit when it should.

great vid..Your unit is only 5 yrs old..Do a KZbin search on how to replace it..Frigidaire will send you a new one , if it broke down before 5 years..There's a few how to vids here..No receipt needed.

I usually don't turn it off at all. When the bucket is full it auto-offs and when I remember to go down to the basement and empty it runs until it is full again. If I were using a hose to drain it directly outside I think I would worry about it always being on though.

My dehumidifier starts and runs great for about an hour, then the compressor clicks off and doesn't come back on at all , but the fan stays running. I have to turn it off and wait for an hour or so and restart it, and it runs fine again for another hour. I have the filter off the back and I can see it ices up about an inch or a bit more then it goes off . I am posting this hoping any one has any ideas., I did not check the pc board yet. thanks, great video !!

Might be that you starting capacitor is on it is way out and needs replacing (can find a lot of videos on where it is and see what you need as a replacement) if it is not holding capacity well it cant cope and the system shuts off.

In my FRIGIDAIRE dehumidifier it does not work: unplugging. Dehumidifier won't start at all....I tried unplugging those wires in others dehumidifiers...same cituation. So, at least from my expirience it is a waste of time. There is a different problem that has nothing to do with those wires that she talkes in video.

i know my dear, you are trying to help people, well, i do not believe on plugging thing is the right was to fix the problem, the electronic board needs be tested by a certified tech, you have to know what you are doing, for the component you are working on, if you wont your dehumidifier to work like it is made to work, then clean out all the dirt and dust out of the air passage, and before you even work at a dehumidifier you have to drain the high voltage capacitor, when you have your dehumidifier on plugged, at your own risk as well, take a instantiated screwdriver and and short the terminals to gather on the high voltage cap, the big silver one...and bubble make sure the plug is out on the wall , check it a few time to bake sure, and now to know that you are safe you can do the foiling , because this could maybe kill you if it is still high voltage charged up, do thing at your own risk if you know what you are doing , i used to fix the old tube TV sets, and... they had 32 hundred volts in the yolk , and caps...the same as your dehumidifier ( high voltage in storage)
