RE: Marking Jars... I purchased some wine glass markers and also mark the SIDES of the jars, in case I mix up the tops. Not that I've ever done that. 🙄Just saying, for a friend, lol. 😂 Anyway, an inventory sheet is a terrific idea. Trying to get that in place for all my food storage, as well as a plan for how to use what, when. It is fun to try new things but it can take awhile to figure out what happens next. Thanks so much for another great video! 💖😄👍
@ThePurposefulPantry11 ай бұрын
Yep - but that won't work for me because I have to then unpack a shelf to find what's there - which is why I mark the tops because I can easily scan and see what I need. I've never mixed up the lids.
@carole677911 ай бұрын
@@ThePurposefulPantry It happens when I take them to food preservation workshops. The contents get poured onto plates for tasting, etc. but when I have "helpers" the jar tops don't always stay with their buddies. Marking both sides and tops gives me a better clue when I re-organize afterward. 🙃

This video gave me an idea how you use the dehydrated food. I have used small card circles with a hole punched in the top and elastic threaded through to label jars. It makes it easy to just move label to new jar when the contents are used .

Great reminder on how to use our foods. I'm dehydrating my first batch of oranges and can't wait to add them to my teas. Since I'm by myself I do a lot of powders. There's no way to eat all the greens that I grow so powders make a great addition to my meals. Thank you!

@@wendyspicer8588 I set my dehydrator to 125 degrees for 48 hours. It seems the moisture wasn't gone so I did another 12 hours at 105. I'm happy with the results.

24-48 hours - depends on how thick you slice and the temperature you set them at. It is not a quick dehydrating process, but worth it to me!

Thanks, for the useful tips, Darcy! As a single senior, I have more dehydrated veggies than I've been consuming, so I now have some useful ideas to avoid wasting my food. I don't know why, but I hadn't considered dehydrating slices of my abundant lemons to use in tea. That's on the schedule for this week.

Thank you so much for the "how and why" tip!! I learned this the hard way with canning. I threw out so much jam because we just weren't eating it and after 3 years, I needed the jars. But now I know what we do use, and I have several things I regularly jar now, things my family uses so often I almost can't keep up. It makes me feel so good knowing I can provide for my family, and my work is appreciated. Thanks for all your tips!!

Probably a silly question, but can one powder a bag of black beans or kidney beans right from the bag, or do they need to be dehydrated? I have some aging out beans I vacuum sealed in mason jars that we just have not gone through in a few years. We tend to use the canned beans from the store for quick meals. Wasn't sure if they had to be dehydrated first, or perhaps after I powder them.
@ThePurposefulPantry11 ай бұрын
If your purpose is bean flour, they can be ground from raw. But if your purpose is powdered beans for 'refried' beans, they need to be cooked first, then dehydrated.

@ThePurposefulPantry10 ай бұрын
I don't do green beans alone - they are part of a vegetable mix. They won't make a great stand alone rehydrated vegetable - better in things than alone. Blanch or cook fully, dry, and simmer in water or broth for a while, and if only blanched, allow them to cook fully.

I decided dehydrated frozen mixed vegetables are gross. They're bad enough not dehydrated, but I had 4 half gallon jars for "emergency cooking". I tried rehydrating and giving them to the chickens because they love warmed frozen mixed veg, but they just looked terrible. So I composted it all. No waste. Now it will feed the bugs that feed the chickens. Also I noticed my cabbage is getting MORE brown in full half gallon jars in the dark even though they are well vacuum sealed. So today I blanched 2# of cabbage and dehydrating and will see how that comes out by comparison.
@ThePurposefulPantry11 ай бұрын
That's likely why they turned brown if you didn't blanch. They aren't long-term storage worthy if not blanched.
@sweaterdoll11 ай бұрын
@@ThePurposefulPantry But no one says that. LOL I have 6 half gallon jars of it. I hope it doesn't end up as compost. I worked hard for it. I guess we'll be eating a lot of cabbage in the next month.
@sweaterdoll11 ай бұрын
@@ThePurposefulPantry Well, the blanched also turned brown some but mostly turned yellow. The texture is different, lighter. I'll have to see if it keeps oxidizing over time in a vacuum-sealed jar to know if they do any better long term. Good experiment though.
