I remember when Glenn used to literally burn an upside down cross into his forehead during the nineties lol. I wish Glenn and the Hoffman brothers would make amends and get back together. They created some of the most iconic sounding death metal music. Once Upon the Cross and Serpents of the Light are awesome albums and I have them in my cars cd rotation lol. People always hate on the production of the Serpents album but that album is a banger imo.

The most awesome thing about Glenn’s vocals is that not only is he the most brutal of the bunch, but he’s also the most clear. Really fucking odd. I almost never need to read the lyrics. I did struggle with Stench Of Redemption, but I think that may have been more on the production end rather than Glenn’s vocals.

If you want a startling contrast of clarity between vocalists Cryptopsy is an excellent example. Lord Worm's vocals aren't even words, he's just shouting his head off (love 'em to bits). Their next vocalist has some of the best diction I've heard in extreme metal.

It also has to do with him going for an even more brutal approach on that album. The more guttural, the less understandable a vocalist, is usually the case. Same with, eg. Frank Mullen. I can understand him most of the time, but at his most extreme, on Effigy of the Forgotten, he's very hard to understand. Which I love as well. 'Stench...' is a fantastic album \m/

Ive been a fan of Glen for 21 years and his interviews have been entertaining over those years, and I think I may be hearing a different tone now than I have before: more perspective, wisdom and gratitude, less general resentment and contempt. Its still there to motivate him, but it seems like he's not as bent out of shape about it all any more. Or maybe its just less bravado and more authenticity, IDK. I aspire to this kind of maturation. Thanks Glen and Garza!

GaRza! I hope you read this. I’m 38. I remember when I first heard SS and the Unanswered video came out. Blew my mind. Funny enough, I always thought you looked like the meanest/most “brutal” dude in the band. I hadn’t listened to death core in a decade and stumbled upon your interview on Doc Coyles podcast. I really admired what you said about working on yourself and setting out to have a successful podcast etc. I’ve never met you but I can tell you’re a real one. Just a damn good dude. And a hell of a nice guy (unlike my initial assumptions about you looking like “the meanest one lol). I’ve spent the weekend checking out your different episodes and being reminded of all the bands I listened to growing up. Great job. You’re the best. I’ll never forget that day I first heard your riffs on Unanswered. Cheers dude. Also, I get stoked when a musician of your caliber is wearing a Dystopia shirt. They got me thru a lot of dark times before bands like Suicide Silence came along

Glen Benton is legendary. Strong as a mountain. And twice as massive. A total class act. Real as it gets. A ton of life wisdom in the mix. Loved this podcast. And for those who are comparing Deicide to other bands such as Metallica, yes we all know Deicide and Metallica are different styles of music (thank you Captain Obvious) and we all know what the haters are going to say...but the truth is that Glen and Steve have built something unmatched, unprecedented, invincible, stalwart, and powerful that has stood the test of time. Shout out other current band members Kevin and Taylor who are adding their genius to the badassery that is Deicide. But anyone who thinks and says that Deicide are a crap band making noise: you must have bumped your head and should seek help immediately. Their compositions, song structures, anthemic writing skills, and the sheer ferocity of their musical prowess and ability to play their instruments is unmatched by anyone in Metallica. Not hating on Metallica. Merely defending Deicide. Anyone who listens to Deicide can tell they are superhumanly talented. Glen and Steve have worked insanely hard over the years and are masters of their craft. Most importantly, they write and perform the greatest music on Earth: death metal. And the songs they write and the jams, grooves, beats, rhythms, compositions they create, especially when considering their longevity with playing such extreme over-the-top music (Glen said Deicide started in the summer of 1987 which is almost 37 years ago from the time of this posting which is an amazing feat), are life-changingly incredible. At the end of the day, when the rubber of the tire meets the pavement of the road, Deicide writes great songs. Their music is awesome. Their cuts are catchy with anthemic hooks, played by truly gifted, committed, dedicated, disciplined musicians. You can see that they work hard to create epic, high-quality music. The blood, sweat, strength, talent, composure, intelligence, sacrifice, and originality of Glen and Steve (specifically) and Deicide (in general) is absolutely amazing.

Saw em in Stockholm in '92 when the place was bombed, we were so pissed off. They got to do 4 songs before police stopped the show. Still heard sacrificial suicide.
