We don't do a Christmas Eve box or December. We have Christmassy pyjamas, watch a movie with some snacks, leave out Father Christmas' treat and then we all read 'Twas the night before Christmas together'.

We do a Christmas Eve box, but the majority of stuff in it comes out every year - it has their stockings and stocking hooks, the plate they leave out for Father Christmas. I put PJs in there, not Christmas specific though - just so they don’t wear scruffy ones to bed so they look respectable in all the photos we send to Granny the next morning 😂 Then they have a couple of consumables - so a Christmas bath bomb and a hot chocolate bomb. No clutter 👍 x
@TheBudgetMumUKАй бұрын
See that sounds sustainable - you’re using and reusing but still little embellishments making it manageable I think 🥰

I love that you save the stockings, hooks and Santa plate for the Christmas Eve box. I wish I’d thought of that! My daughter’s 20 but hasn’t grown out of doing all the traditions (she is autistic so routine is really important), so I think I’ll mention doing this as it’s so expensive, especially as her boyfriend comes now too. It continues the decorating and anticipation right up to Christmas Eve.

The old treasured teddies would get new fresh ribbons so they would not feel left out on Christmas Day.

I found that so many of these things like the sweaters/jumpers and the specialty tins and foods and even the PJs was something my kids really didn’t care about (2 boys and I girl) and it was something I did more for me. Over the years they confessed that they really don’t care nor do they even enjoy them so it’s taken a lot of pressure off.

I have my home nicely decorated with charity shop tree and glass vintage baubles. I bought one box of chocolates for under the tree. High tea, with Home made baking treats, fudge, and yummy appetizers daily. This year I am sending cash to my daughter for her to buy fir my grandkids and put my name on it. We are in different cities, and meet in summer instead.

Any Christmas jumpers, party clothes we buy from the local charity shops and last years Christmas jumpers that no longer fity children are donated. Christmas food I make cookie dough and mince pies for the freezer, then i can pull them out and bake them off fresh.

I leave out the word ‘ Christmas’ and say I’m decorating for the winter season. For me that means mainly white accessories, including tee lights in clear IKEA glasses that used to house a candle and edible center pieces like Tangerines in a beautiful bowl and greenery and berries / pine cones. There are loads of KZbin tutorials for paper decorations that just require plain A4 paper. I realize that it can become expensive when children are involved but lots of things don’t have to cost a fortune.

I will be putting up the same tree I've had for several years and originally got from a charity shop - it's lovely. I will be getting a star for the top, and new baubles this year though as last year it only had lights and tinsel😅

Aw well that’s definitely manageable! 🥰

I can totally understand the point of Christmas traditions, but they seem to have become ever more costly. Winding it back and just doing simple things is your gift to future you. A lovely family walk to see the Christmas lights in your area followed by a hot chocolate and a treat like a gingerbread man biscuit is delightful. Decorating said gingerbread man or even just a rich tea biscuit is lovely. Making a Christmas log with a parent or grandparent is fun. An afternoon watching a Christmas movie draws us altogetger. Making a decoration for the tree, house, or special person is a special thing to do. Having an advent calendar brings anticipation. Doesn’t have to be toys or chocolate. The old-fashioned paper ones are delightful. Writing a letter to santa and posting it is special. Elfs, Christmas boxes, special Christmas PJs, special Christmas outfits, and expensive toys are unnecessary. Children remember the things they did more than the things they had. So this year, wind it back and go simple.

We’ve had a gift budget of around £25 per person for several years now, it saves a lot of stress and worry about the cost of Christmas. This year I have bought 2 boxes of beautiful Christmas cards for family members instead of personalised ones, and I generally cater for everyone but we share the cost between us and we don’t buy more than we actually need. I’ve just set up a budgeting binder for the coming year and I’m excited to see how it goes.

We only have new PJ's for Christmas but they weren't themed. Our Christmas tree is 32 years old and we got it when we first got married. It isn't the best looking but it is nostalgic, it doesn't stop me wanting a Balsam hill tree though lol. I love Christmas jumpers and wear them for the whole of December but they are either ones I was gifted or second hand. I do like to decorate everywhere in my house as we always host but I am very mindful of why we actually celebrate Christmas which sadly many don't care about.

We are conditioned to spend big at Christmas! Consumers go over board. I gave my tree to my daughter last year, she didn’t have one. My grandsons’ loved it!! I don’t have room for a tree anymore. I bought 2 $3 strands of lighted garland to make a tree on my wall. I’m broke and cannot afford big presents. I really want time with my family. I don’t get see them enough. Merry Christmas!

We do the Christmas pjs every year as a tradition. I wait until they go on sale though. I do like the idea of just getting matching shirts and everyone wearing their own bottom though. That would save prob more than half. The other thing like Christmas Eve boxes etc I don't do because as you said it's the pressure to have gifts before gifts
@andreamiles9325Ай бұрын
We do a December 1st box. It contains our Christmas mugs ( really old), plates, advent calendar which is about 35 years old
