Same with blocking brands on social media. It doesn't work on all social media apps, but one some if you've blocked a specific brand any ads they run off their page will not be shown to you. Though, they're starting to catch on to that and making ads that link to sites not their social pages on TikTok to avoid that rule.

I had to do this with Bath and Body Works because their notifications were getting aggressive 😅. I like their body sprays, but that's really about it. Their candles don't seem to be anything special to me, and I can get cheaper lotion and hand soap from Walmart. Not saying I never treat myself but it's been a long time since I've bought anything from them and I don't feel like I'm missing out.

I would love to see your take on booktok/bookstagram inspired consumerism. When I was a teen, you could be a reader with a library card and sprawling on your bed. Now I see everyone buying bookinspired outfits, shelfs, fancy string lights, making expensive and barely comfortable reading nooks, and buying huge amounts of books they don't end up reading even in multiple editions. While I don't want to shame people for these actions, I think there's still a point to be made about performing your identity through consumption on book social media.

Booktok be better with thrifted books or library books. Not excessive Amazon book orders. Making home cute is fine. But way booktok does it unsustainable is crazy. Thrift and upcycle and it's all good. Not the dollar store stuff than breaks in few weeks.

Brands making claims about their sunscreens being "Reef Safe" is unfortunately a form of greenwashing. The study about reef safety and sunscreens has been misinterpreted on many ocasions and the term itself is not regulated by law. Also you only really need to worry about it if you are going to swim in an area with reefs. Lab Muffin Beauty Science has said more on this subject if someone is interested. Other than this it was a great video and I love being deinfluenced 💛

@ryanb1800
@ryanb1800 6 ай бұрын
@@fallenangelforeverthat’s the problem with the whole marketing term. There is no such thing as “reef safe”. All the studies people reference are unrealistic concentrations, in enclosed environments, have varied results between experiments (cannot be replicated therefore not reliable), and inorganic (mineral) did worse in many of the studies. It’s been known for a long time that minerals like zinc oxide are not ideal for marine life (obviously dose dependant), however to market them as “reef safe” is just capitalism with no scientific literacy. Lab muffin beauty science has a great video explaining everything.

Hey Cara! Great video! Just a note, check out LabMuffinBeautyScience’s videos about sunscreen myths. In it she discusses how the idea of sunscreen being unsafe for reefs is largely not proven and was based off of some sketchy studies. Of course we should try to use environment friendly products, but this advice of “reef friendly” tends to turn off people from using sunscreen altogether because the reef friendly ones tend to sit badly on the skin. Love that you said its best to use any sunscreen instead of none tho 🥰

They've been selling those 'expand when wet' towels at dollar tree for years 😭 However they're usually quite small towels with cartoon characters from shows/movies aimed at kids, so I'm assuming they're used to clean up spills That being said though, having a huge version of these towels makes no sense other than to make a lazy product and hope someone buys it 0_o
@Hermititis
@Hermititis 7 ай бұрын
I never thought about spills. I always thought they were meant for kids as washcloths...you know, kiddo in the bathtub, drop that little compressed towel puck into the bathwater, then once it unfolds you lather it up with soap & the kid gets to wash up. Of course, the "unfurling trick" only works the first time, but that's why they have cartoon characters to help them stay fun for subsequent baths.

Great stuff! I’m curious how you feel about back to school having sooo many useless but popular products. Something’s are helpful yes, like backpacks becoming rollaround packs to help stop back and shoulder pain. But junk like aesthetic locker accessories, hundreds of backpack accessories that always fall off, implying that everyone needs an entirely new wardrobe and all new makeup supplies, the list goes on! I also feel like the rise in shows like Lizzie McGuire, That’s So Rave, Hannah Montana, definitely added to the “back to school” aesthetics too.

6:22- the best alternative for the water towel is a travel towel. It is thin and rolls into itself with snaps. Mine goes with me every time I travel. I've used it for everything from a beach towel, pool towel, to a regular towel (if there aren't enough for the group), a privacy curtain, and a blanket. I've had mine for 5 years and counting. Such a good buy.

Fake tan is something else people need to stop buying, they are expensive waste of plastic. Staining on sheets and clothes means more wash cycles and more fabrics being thrown out before the end of their normal lifespan. The idea that you need a summer skin tone or summer hair cut/colour is just as silly as adding to your seasonal wardrobe purely for the sake of adding to it

I will say I did get one of those expanding towels as a child but it was a washcloth and it was Scooby Doo and it became an okay washcloth and I loved that thing as a kid. I feel like it's a cool little gimmick for kids and if it's a washcloth you will probably use it in the bath so you would want it to be wet to wash your face or body. I feel like they de-innovated making it a paper towel thin full body towel.

Can you de influence overconsumption when moving into a house or apartment. I am not an avid consumer normally. But after getting a house my purchasing has increased a lot. An example now that I have a garage I got a used tool box but the tools I had before were not a full set. So now I’m making extra purchases of tools I don’t really need just to say I have all the tools I might need. I think that having a complete set or everything your missing from a room or area can trigger unnecessary purchases. So if you have any experience with curbing that new home consumption it would be much appreciated.

Funny enough right before this I saw someone test that portable beverage chiller and compared putting a can in the freezer for the same amount of time and the soda was not only significantly colder than the freezer soda (like 30 degrees colder) the soda was surprisingly not shaken up and exploding. That being said it is bulky and you do also need ice still and can only do one can at a time. I can see it having its uses for some people but I also don’t like my drinks super cold so it’s not for me.

I felt so superior until you brought up summer wardrobes. Moving from a desert to a swamp really got me started on summer vs winter wardrobes, when I didn’t want to give up the styles I felt like were my “signature” style. Except now the place I live gets hotter every summer and I have to buy 1-2 more linen pieces every summer to keep up with how unsuitable even t-shirts are for the heat and humidity.

You can also just use a linen towel or a cotton towel that doesn't have the frottée, but rather a waffle piqué if you REALLY are that concerned about too little space in your bag.

If you have to purchase products to hide your alcohol in, you got a problem. I could see the expandable towel, be used like a wet-wipe, for camping or something.

Aw thank you!! I sometimes get a bit insecure about my teeth because I don’t think they look as white in person haha so thank you ☺️ and yes I had so much dental stuff when I was young because I had a huge overbite (I could fit my thumb and wiggle it with how big the overbite was eek)! I had 2 years of braces, 1 year of head gear at night, and then years of a retainer 😅

Hi Cara! I absolutely love your videos. I know you love to research and dive deep into certain topics - me too! When I was looking into sunscreens, more specifically the reef-safe ones, I came across the Lab Muffin Beauty Science channel on KZbin. I recommend watching her video "Reef-Safe Sunscreen? The Science" Super interesting and I learned a lot!

❤Hi ,Cara thanks for a new video Truly big fan from Bulgaria 🎉 What your opinion for a second hand shopping ?Are you buying something from thrift shop ? 😊

I love secondhand shopping! My shirt in this video was a recent thrift of mine (only $4!) and most of my closet is secondhand. I think it's still worth being mindful about not overspending and impulse buying even with secondhand, but it's certainly my favorite way to get clothes!

I can't fathom how people can afford to buy a whole new wardrobe every season. I can barely afford to buy my wants period, I'm lucky if I can get one item off my wishlist every quarter. No way I've got hundreds in spare cash sitting around to be spent on a new wardrobe every 3 months.
