The "water bottle trend" is especially annoying since they were meant to be a sustainable alternative. I have two water bottles (one for home and one for on the go) and didn't spend more than $20 for the two of them. I use my water bottles until they are no longer usable.
@jin394 Жыл бұрын
yeah, like I understand if someone wants to upgrade from a plastic reusable to a stainless steel since the latter holds onto less bacteria, or if someone wants a few for holding different liquids (water vs coffee/tea) or locations, but throwing out or completely stop using an old one makes no sense to me. Shelling out the money for a brand name also doesn't make sense to me because the off brands work 99% (if not 100%) the same but I'm not as mad about that.

I've seen the Stanley Cups pop up all over campus as a college student and I was tempted to get one. Then I realized I didn't want to hold it in my hand everywhere I went just to show people that I had one. When I saw that clip of how badly it leaks, every ounce of desire just fled from my body. Waiting for these to go the way of the Hydroflask.
@donghye1004 Жыл бұрын
i've had my hydroflask since i bought into the trend four years ago and i think it was worth the purchase. it's definitely odd and offputting to see trends with water bottles, especially since they're supposed to be sustainable.

I have the flap-up style Stanley waterbottle. It's not nearly as bulky as the straw model and it doesn't really leak, the only time I spilled was when I accidently flapped up the flap in my backpack and flipped my backpack on it's side. Obviously don't buy things just to show it off though, it's still heavy to hold in my hand even when I do carry it.
@jochenkraus7016 Жыл бұрын
"Then I realized I didn't want to hold it in my hand everywhere..." I think that's a very important thought when deciding whether to buy something. I have in mind a way to use the product and how it will work there but it might turn out differently in reality. E.g. I won't use a kitchen gadget if it's super annoying to clean it. Or I might keep using the smaller lower spec camera instead of the bigger, better one because it fits better in a certain bag and is much less weight to carry around.
@Aelffwynn Жыл бұрын
Hey, these things are all fine if you'll actually use them for a long time, like they should be used. I'm confused at college students with Stanley cups though. I thought they were for parents and office workers who aren't always walking everywhere. I have a couple of travel mugs because they're very convenient for drinking water all day without worrying that I will spill all over the computers or expensive inventory, lol. I have reusable water bottles from my college years, and I still use them for travel and errands.

For example: 1 big one for a long day at work or at university/school, 1 smaller one with a sports closure and maybe one for when the other one is in the dishwasher or a really light one for hiking or one that fits in your bottle holder at your bike or whatever. But nobody needs so many IDENTICAL bottles. I have one big insulated bottle with a disposable lid (sports closure and a normal one) which I use regularly and a cheap small plastic one for longer bike rides because my regular bottle won't fit unfortunately.

I feel like the Dyson air wrap’s appeal is that it replaces a lot of other hair tools (flat iron, curling iron, round brush, hair dryer, etc.). So unless you don’t already have those tools, it doesn’t really seem worth it. Plus, there are cheaper dupes on the market like the Shark Flex Style if you really want a multi-tool hair styler.
@BlackBlood74 Жыл бұрын
Here is what I've learned after buying mine. I bought it because I never had a curler and my hair dryer was starting to shut off and smell like burning. It is awesome. It is quick BUT she is right. The hair style doesn't last. I'll go out and my hair will fall apart. My hair is short and frizzy so I can't say if this happens to everyone but after setting my hair with the dyson, I'll need to go over it with a straightener. Which is what I would do when I had my regular routine too. Any humidity will destroy that too but it is tougher. Now, I don't think $600 is worth that but I do enjoy it. A shark would probably work great too and it's cheaper. Or just a regular hair dryer and rollers. Don't know.

Cara may or may not be incidentally right about the dyson air wrap but all I can really say is, someone who doesn't even own a hair dryer probably doesn't need to be chiming in with her two cents about hair care. I don't style my hair often myself (though I do own a hair dryer) and if I were to be thinking about picking up a tool (one that I would most likely only use occasionally) I would put a lot more weight into someone's opinion who regularly styled and took care of their hair and had experience using different tools at different price points.

But when I finally got one for myself and tried to fit all my usual things that usually put into my previous backpack, not everything would fit. I couldn’t even fit in my water bottle and my laptop in there too. It was also hard to zip and unzip the bag. I knew there were different sizes of the kanken backpack (I think I got the medium one) but I couldn’t be bothered to get a new one. They’re also pretty expensive. I ended up going back to my previous backpack (which I’m happy with and still use it) and rarely found any use for my kanken backpack that I had to give it away. @@VictoriaMarch13 quick infodump- the most popular brand for snail mucin is cosrx, but the general takeaway i believe is most important from the whole virality of it is the upsurge in recognizing that more gentle skincare can be much more effective in treating acne and irritation. kbeauty (and jbeauty, but most of the viral brands lately have been korean) in general has much more of a focus on soothing and hydration instead of the more western approach of attempting to nuke acne from orbit, which frequently leads to more irritation and more acne. I recommend doing some research into this if your acne bothers you; some channels I like are Tina Tanaka Harris, Beauty Within, AliceintheRabbitHole, and Lab Muffin Beauty Science. tldr: the viral trend was based on the concept of gentle skincare to let your skin heal itself instead of aggressively trying to fix it, and there are many products that can help with that depending on your specific needs.

I think that another piece of advice is that, while asking yourself why you should buy a product, you should really reflect if the answer is just 'it would make me happy'. Are you saying that because it would be satisfying to see all those tiktoks and think about you owning that product? (this one I myself have done). Or because the products gimmick is going to be fun to try out? Is it something you will truly benefit from and enrich your life? If people suddenly start making fun of it and calling it corny, will you still want it? Accuse me of hating fun all you want, but It's important to make it very clear to yourself the difference between a short-term dopamine rush and true satisfaction

I'm curious what Cara thinks about any relationship between gender and viral products. I would imagine viral product trends are just as effective in manipulating purchase decisions of men, but I can't seem to recall as many examples as readily as I can those appealing to women. Perhaps toy lightsabers or video games or something? Still, it seems heavily weighted to one side. I wonder if that's true, or just an indication of my personal bias. Regardless, might be an interesting topic.
@CutYourBangs9 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with that. As a woman, I feel like most product trends I've seen have been targeted at women, usually to meet beauty standards or as status symbols. I think this is just an extension or concentration of an unattainable standard that's been expected of women for many many years now. It's really only new in how fast it moves. I can't speak much for men, though, as I'm not one. I'd be curious to see how this same phenomenon works when targeting men, and how much of it is fundamentally the same.
@ThisUserPassedAway Жыл бұрын

I haven't done any research on this so I'm just throwing things out there, but I'm wondering if it's tied to the culture around gender as a whole. Women are constantly treated as high maintenance and obsessed with shopping from a young age, so I'm thinking all this influencing targeting them has something to do with that.
@shiina29 Жыл бұрын
I think because everyone's putting pictures of themselves online now, men are also starting to get a small taste of the intense pressure women have always felt and there are viral beauty products for men, too, I think. They're far less common, though, because the beauty standards for men basically allow them you stay as they are (no makeup or major changes to their hair, etc) so they don't need any products to do that.
@Tzinacacihuatl Жыл бұрын
That would actually be a great subject for a video essay! I think that's because femininity is inherently artificial. Masculinity is supposed to be a man in his natural state, but to be femenine a woman needs to alter her appearance through clothes, hair styling, make-up, shaving etc. to fit her society's current femininity standard. Through time and in many different societies men have had more natural, less elaborate styles that are more oriented towards practicality, whereas women have been pushed towards a focus on appearance to a point where even in today's world where women also do practical work (we've always done it but that's for another day) even the tools we're supposed to use are "cute" or "pretty", things that enhance our overall look. It's like we're always performing for an audience, even when alone, as if we were our own voyeurs. It's kind of disturbing if you think too much about it. It's also why women that refuse to participate in this (think butch lesbians and tomboy het/bi women) are seen as "unfeminine" and accused of trying to "be men" even though they're just being their natural selves. Femininity is directly tied to consumption. You *need* stuff to build your femininity as it's not inherent to womanhood (yes they are completely different things). Think how many industries would go bankrupt if women suddenly decided to just be their natural selves... Bye bye makeup industry, fast fashion... Less money for hair stylists, plastic surgeons and shaving tools brands... It would be chaos. Maybe gay men would save them..

My previous job gave me two water bottles for free last year. I still use it to this day. I think it’s ridiculous to buy multiple expensive water bottles just because it’s trendy.

I have been obsessed with water bottles since 2014. At the time I worked outdoors all year long and the idea of my water staying cool in the summer was brand new. I was obsessed, but only bought two for work and then was gifted several more. Its been a few years since I bought any new water bottles. I finally caved and got a Stanley when i saw they have a leak proof version. It has a screw on lid and straw that folds down. This actually works for me and my lifestyle. I really wanted a larger bottle that could also fit in a cupholder. I use it everytime I leave the house. I love the color I got too. That being said I cant help but feel a little embarrassed by it. I feel like a joined a club I dont want to be apart of 🤦🏼♀️

I'm glad I've never heard of Stanley cups till right now, or really most of these products. Shows my low screen time this year is more than just a number. As for the Uggs, I've always just simply liked them, minus their shitty ruber sole. I still have a tall pair that I've had since 2011 and wear regularly in the winter. Take care of your stuff guys, it can last if you maintain it ❤️

I have OG tall chestnut Ugg’s that were made in Australia. They have the rubble sole with thick ugg logo imprinted on them. My brother paid $300 on my 16th birthday (9 years ago.) I wore the heck out of them as a teenager and they are still in awesome condition today. I consider them vintage now so they only get to go out a couple times a year. I LOVE THEM!!

I recently bought a new water bottle, but I had started watching this channel beforehand and used what I learned here in thoughtfully purchasing one. It's a glass water bottle that has time and measurement markings on the side, two different lids (one with a hole for a straw, one with a yarn handle), a metal straw that came with it, a steeper for fruits, and a nice colored rubber protective covering. Thought process behind purchasing that I took away from here? It's reusable and probably better for me than plastic. Although it doesn't always keep the water completely cold, a fridge and more ice is a very easy fix for that. It's the only water bottle I take to and from work, as it's very much a desk bottle since it is glass, but the protective rubber cover helps with grip and helps a little with durability (I'm also cautious with it anyways and not tossing it to random places). That being said, the clear bottle with time and measurement markings were something I was looking for since I am making the effort to drink more water daily. Knowing my own habits, I tend to drink more of whatever is in front of me when there is a straw and I'm not having to worry about unscrewing a lid or flipping a cap. Ergo, a bottle with a straw to encourage drinking more water was a must. Do I use my other lid? No, not really, but I have it in case I do need or want to use it. I also don't really use the steeper, but it is an option if I decide to put fruit in my water at some point, or make the bottle of water iced tea instead. The only real downside I've experienced thus far is having to handwash the bottle, but it came with a good sponge to wash it with that reaches all the way inside the bottle. Price of it? Less than $30. I've had it for over 3 months and haven't had to use a single other water bottle aside from going to the gym.

I got a hydroflask a few years ago (I am fortunate in that I didn't pay for it myself but I asked for it as a holiday gift) to meet a specific need - I needed a leakproof water bottle big enough that could hold enough water for a long hike and was insulated so the water wasn't boiling 2 hours in. Now that I have that water bottle, along with a couple smaller sized insulated water bottles that I got for free from work, I do not have any more need for water bottles. When I see videos about water bottle trends, I sometimes feel self conscious that I did get a hydroflask when it was popular, but when you said to examine your why and if it's related to trends, I felt better. I had a specific need and I knew through the reviews of this super popular bottle that it would meet my needs. And that's okay!

I have had my Dyson airwrap over a year now and haven't regreted my purchase. It makes my hair exactly how I want it with minimal time and effort. I don't even think about how much money I spent buying it anymore and I can't live without it. I would rather have one quality product that do the job well than penny pinching and going through a few cheap dupes hoping to find one that works.

That's how I feel about the Revair. I got mine on sale for like $400, which sounds psychotic for a blow dryer. But it's honestly been a godsend, I'm no longer afraid to do my hair. 😂 And considering the savings for not having to go to the salon for blowouts and trims, it has already paid for itself. Some things are just worth the investment, but you have to be thoughtful about it.

I did jump in with the Stanley cup trend in late December because of that viral video and Stanley's reply to it. I just loved that they cared enough to acknowledge how good of a PR that original video was and decided to reward her with a new car (which is also a pr move on its own but at least it's sth positive). However, I really didn't find that tumbler/quencher product very useful so I got myself a small quick flip from them which is just as cute imo and I can actually carry it in my bag without any leaking. It also made a positive impact on my water intake which was a plus. I understand the hype but I'm sure that trend is gonna die off in a minute and especially people who don't drive won't bother to carry that huge cup with them. In addition, while the Dyson Airdrop may be a little easier for people with disabilities bc you don't need to move the device as much as regular hair devices, I think that price tag is not it. I used one before, it looked beautiful when I first did my hair but the curls didn't hold over 5 minutes and I have thick hair that holds curls as if I was born with them. The friend who let me use it never has any curls nor perfectly straight hair in any of her photos which makes me think that the device doesn't really give you a long lasting hairdo.

My local thrift shop has a whole shelf of outdated Starbucks tumblers. Wait long enough and you'll find what you're looking for. As far as human dog beds I wonder how many have broken up relationships because of the lack of close snuggle time and intimacy?

I love the rise the "human-sized dog bed". I feel like a lot of things like this were once just tools in SpEd that are SO EXPENSIVE. Them going viral have made them much more affordabe for school districts, therapy offices, county programs, and private residences/homes for kids and adults who need that deep pressure. Where some medium districts could afford one or two that was shared within the highest need classrooms, now multiple classrooms can have them. Influencing can have a positive influence in terms of helping people find what they need, though there can be a lot ads and crap to sift through first.

Instead of buying an air wrap, get a salon quality heat protecting spray with medium hold, and a set of velcro rollers with clips. If you let your hair completely cool in the rollers, your hair will keep its shape for 2-3 days. You can use any old curling or flat iron as long as it’s heating your hair up, and then cooling down in the roller. If you let the curl cool without a roller for support, gravity pulls and stretches the curl.
@Slippin_fred Жыл бұрын
This was a good video. I didn’t even know about the dog backpack. I don’t have social media and I think one of the Pro’s of it it being easily influenced and shown trendy items, I think if anyone is struggling with overconsumption of trendy items , they should take a break from TikTok for sure ! Also for the Ugs I don’t see a major problem like the other items , if someone thinks ugs are cool looking like how I do I think that’s fair but buying every color would seem obsessive 💀. I hope you have a great Christmas :)

I personally think one nice water bottle you love is nice though. My one and only bottle is a premium-branded steel insulated bottle. $14 on sale, so much easier to clean than normal bottles, neutral and minimalist with basically invisible branding, very premium-feeling, and always a joy to use. I guess you just gotta be careful not to get carried away with chasing trends and buying more than you need, but this is otherwise a big win in terms of daily pleasure for me.

My mom has the dyson air wrap and I tried it and it's terrible. It didn't hold my curls at all and it's so loud, especially if you're holding it right next to your ear. The air it blasts out is just as hot as a straightener, but now this hot air is being blasted on onto your hands. It's also difficult to work with and understand and I got burns on my scalp. 100% not worth the $600.
