I have driven Jeeps for 35 years. 2 CJs, 3 XJs, and now have a WJ and WK. I've done 98% of the work on them myself. BUT, I have learned A LOT about Jeeps in the last three weeks listening to this guy. I especially love the junk yard (treasure hunt) videos.

That was very interesting! You definitely know your Jeeps! I am 50 years old and have always wanted a Jeep since I was kid. I finally decided to go for it and bought a used Wrangler which I love to drive and regret not buying one sooner. It is a pretty basic Jeep but I can’t help but smile every time I get behind the wheel. Thanks!

I was skeptical, but your history is dead on. A couple things I'd add to your take on why it's the most American brand; first is that the freedom you get with a Jeep means taming the wild. We've been good at that and Jeeps fit the bill. Second, is that it was born out of necessity and is definitely a "melting pot" of automotive history. But, like Ike said, it helped win WWII and we owe those boys that drove them and won the war the true honor of making Jeep the greatest American brand.

@@DEInTheGarageAn excellent, concise, and very well informed presentation, but I must point out one glaring error at 24:20 . The 'GP' designation did not stand for 'general purpose' as has been commonly assumed over the years. In 1940s Fordspeak, G = Government, P = 80" wheelbase. The GP designation was on data plates of the first contract, Ford built, 'pre standard' Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4X4 G503 before it was changed to the standard GPW which was produced throughout WW2. The corresponding Willys models were MA (Military, first contract) and MB (Military, Second Contract). Ford's GPW was GP built to the Willys pattern. Also, the stamped steel grille was introduced by Ford well into production of the GPW. All Ford GP and Willys MA as well as early Ford GPW and Willys MB vehicles had the welded iron 'slat grille' similar to those found on larger military trucks. www.ewillys.com/tag/slat-grille/

A little about myself and why I love Jeep. I was a bit of a troubled kid as a teen. I found solace and the ability to focus that I needed back then in the mountains. I did not yet have a Drivers License , so when I felt like the tail was wagging my dog, I would take my 22 browning , load up my pack and walk into the Wasatch mountains on a Friday after school, and return for dinner Sunday evening. Things were different back then. You could walk through a neighborhood with a loaded rifle and not be shot as a terrorist. Parents had the last say on the way their children were raised, not the state. They were kinder gentler times and the wilderness , for me , was the source of all that was good in America. Then I grew up, left home and life took over. There was always something more important than getting out and recharging my batteries. I forgot who I was. Recently, I was reminded. I have COPD. I can't pack it in anymore, but I can drive. So I bought my Grand Cherokee and she's going to get everything she needs to get me where I need to go , when I need to get there. (It's a partnership). She's going to take me back to me. God bless her.

Thank You! Loved it! When I was 14 I bought a Bantam for $50. I wasn't supposed to drive but I did. It had a "cool factor" I didn't understand then. When I was 16 I worked a summer job on a ranch. I was given a WWII Jeep to use pulling a cart from field to field instead of a tractor, mostly because I was the only one who could keep it running. The fuel tank was stamped steel which rusted and the the rust would get into the carburetor and it would stop running (no fuel filters then (1950s). It was a great little utility vehicle (although we didn't know that then). I have 4 Jeeps right now, a '97 Grand Cherokee, '91Cherokee, A "13 JK" Wrangler, a '86 CJ7, and a 59 Willys wagon. I'm just negotiating on a Korean War vintage Jeep (can't recall the model stamped on the glove box data plate). When I was in the Army, I had a military version of the CJ5. The greatest vehicles I have ever driven, and I have raced and rallied all over North America, and driven all over the world. Rob

I bought my first Jeep (08 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara) back in Sept 2019. I regret not buying one sooner. An absolute solid beast. I love it and am now a Jeeper for life. My daughter and I have had many offroad adventures this spring/summer. I have slept in it on overnight campouts, hauled my ATV deep into the bush, enjoyed the sun with the top off. It's actually opened my eyes to a community I never knew existed. In my view this is more than just a set of wheels to get you around. It's a lifestyle. It's something my daughter and I bond over. She never knew about offroading and now because of the Jeep she found another passion. Of course the dog 🐕 loves it because he gets to go deep in the bush and run around off leash. We have actually explored vast areas of our surrounding area we would never otherwise have known about if it weren't for the Jeep. I truly understand the passion for this vehicle and its history

Excellent video! Loved the history & you didn’t miss a beat. I’ve studied Jeep’s history, beginning in 1995, when I purchased my first Jeep. A 1978 CJ5, for the purpose of going off road, not really to drive it anywhere else. I quickly became hooked on that little beast & have had one ever since. I sold the little 78 in 2010 & have regretted it ever since. My current TJ is my favorite of the Jeep’s I have owned. Other than upgrading to a 31 x 10.50 x 15 tire, it is unmodified, never having been lifted. I did go so far as to cut the dash & install a double din entertainment system. In the end, I’m glad I did it, but thought long and hard before doing it & was on pins & needles as I was cutting. All is good, she’s very reliable and I have no intention of getting rid of it. Enough about my Jeep, I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.

Great videos and great comment! But I have to correct you on the M151 Mutt. Its was the independent rear suspension that caused all the rollover issues! This was modified in the A1 version and finally addressed in the A2 version. Whilst it was a Ford design (with a tractor motor), the M151 was later also made under contract by AM General, the military supplier arm of Jeep. I owned an original MB Jeep for 35 years and currently own a Grand Cherokee. Yes, Jeep is freedom and American! Thanks, Frank

JEEP: Chariot of The Liberators. Good history lesson. You have been quite accurate. The contract Ford agreed to producing the MB, Ford labeled it GPW, had a clause requiring any failing component to be replaced. Henry Ford stamped every nut, bolt, part, and piece with an "F" so if the failing part did not have an "F" on it, "send it to Overland, it's not mine."

I drive nothing but old Grand Cherokees which are a dime a dozen in the junk yards. Both mine have over 200k miles and when something breaks I can head to a u-pull yard and find a replacement part for a few dollars. I have respect for Toyota's offroad capability, but you wouldn't catch me dead in one.

Subscribed. My Jeep story and why I love my 2000 WJ 4.7L GC. In 2015, I need a 4x4 to tow and launch an 8m boat so I searched for a cheap but good XJ. I found a few that were ok but I located the WJ with an "engine tick". The car body and paint was perfect, the leather interior was perfect but the engine tick was s spun big end KNOCK. I purchased the car for $1000 (down from 3K asking price). Here is what I fixed/replaced. New fully reco HO 4.7L (they did not have standard engines) All HO parts Bonnet and tail gate struts Dash out to replace broken blend doors, the AC evap and heater core was replaced with new at the same time. I also had to epoxy the dash pad to the dash frame as it was separating. Reco Steering box Front and rear shockers Front and rear disk machine Front drive shaft and bearing hub replacement All up 7K and the car drives like new. 2020 the car still looks perfect and drives very well. Fuel economy (its not my daily) is good on long distance runs. I have driven 880klm on a single tank easily. I swear the car looks like its smiling when looking at it from the front.

@@DEInTheGarage Build a custom Jeep took a lot of cash to do it right. Been watching your other videos yes the 4.0 is a good motor and the 258 with light mods. If Ford had bought Jeep we would have seen a Taurus wagon on the full-size Grand Wagoneer (SJ) If Chevy had bought it would have seen a 4.3 V6 and Chevy would have drop the Jeep just to keep the Blazer. The Ford Maverick V8 in the 70's was selling better than the Mustang. The main reason for the Maverick was it cost a lot less than the Mustang. In the end Ford killed the Maverick the keep the Mustang. Chrysler did a lot for Jeep in the 90's and the golden year ended in 2004. I think Jeep forgot the core base like Harley-Davidson did by selling to people who really should be the car like 4x4 vehicle's. To me a Jeep is well a Jeep a little rough and yeah it will spill your coffee from the cup holder! I think a Jeep should have a inline 6 cyl. engine, solid axles dana 44, Stainless steel frame, leaf springs or coils springs I looked a new pickup they are not made for off-road 4x4, ,only the name is off-road these are just tar babies now. I think you should be on the Jeep board you under Jeep more than those clowns at Jeep. Oh, I saw a Cherokee other day don't know what year it was, it looked not like a Jeep and not able to go off-road so sad.

Great history, loved this vid. However I do disagree on Jeep being the most American brand. All those points can also be made about Ford. Ford not only gives you whatever feeling you claim Jeep gives you, it has produced cars that are just as iconic as the Jeep (including actually making Jeeps before Jeep existed) and Ford got America on wheels, giving us the ultimate freedom of transportation in the first place. So not invalidating the awesomeness of Jeep, but most american? I don’t think so.

I didn't get the value out of it because of the year only the 3000 I paid for it. couldn't find a better deal so i settled for the 2003 , like you said, it is all american easy to fix and finding parts are easy as pie and thanks to your videos I have done a lot of work on it my self. and I'm nobodies mechanic , again thank you very much. long live the Jeep

I am late to this conversation but there is also another company out there with similar roots kinda anyway and I know you know what it is and thats Harley Davidson. Just like jeep, veterans came home and adapted and modified you name it. I telling you this cause I have my first jeep I've owned in the garage, an 87 YJ its a project now. But in my drive I have my 2013 JK two door the only way to have a wrangler in my opinion, and when I get tired of 4 wheels I get on my 2014 ultra limited Harley. GOD you gotta love America and the freedom, i just retired last year and have all the time i need to enjoy 4 wheeling and an occasional trip on the bike. Keep up the videos THANKS

Yea, seriously. I always say you can take a Wrangler, wrap it around a pole, flip it, and blow the motor, and folks will still line up to give you $4k for it. Only other vehicle that can be said for is a Toyota Tacoma. Not my cup of tea, but I must give them credit. You can;t find one for under $5 and the ones at that price range are thrashed!

Great Job debunking the myths but my OCD compels me to comment on two things ......The shirt you're wearing in a NINE slat MB/GPW grill NOT seven ! LOL probably just a mistake and you know it . Secondly , after the war with the steel panel wagons and pick ups , Willys really did pretty much invent the whole SUV market . Enjoyed the vid , Thank you .

Great rant. I picked up a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 196,000 mi basically just to flip and then I fell in love with the car. paid $1,100 and put on new tires new starter new brakes but that's about it. best car I've ever owned. I used to drive Mercedes for years and I'm hooked on this Jeep. I mean, think about it I've got about $2000 into this car and it runs perfect it's a 5.2 l V8 I want to keep it forever and bring it back to original condition. Lol

I’ve had a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited that I bought for my wife’s birthday. She loved that Jeep. I’ve had a 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ that I fixed up and customized. I gave that to my son and replaced it with a 2015 Jeep JK Wrangler Freedom. Jeeps are fun but they aren’t designed to be a daily driver SUV. If you buy a Jeep Wrangler to use as a daily driver you may very well be disappointed. They aren’t fuel efficient and they ride rough, but they are a heck of a lot of fun.

Jeep supposedly derived from the military term GP (General Purpose) Geepee, and eventually it became the iconic name of today JEEP.
@-oiiio-3993
@-oiiio-3993 4 жыл бұрын
It did not stand for 'general purpose' as has been commonly assumed over the years. In Fordspeak, G = Government, P = 80" wheelbase.

Plus Jeeps run hot especially from the floorboards and firewall. I knew from the beginning when I bought mine 14 years ago. It states in the manual to always run the air, in the least, on low to the leg area and never without the carpet or liner because of how hot they are. 😉

The problem arose when the CJ5 became increasingly popular in the late '70s - early '80s and was extensively youth marketed. People would buy them and drive them like they were Mustangs or Camaros. Most roll overs occurred at medium speed on highway off ramps when people would over brake while turning. Basically, the 'idiot factor'.

Where She's at. 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (special edition) 4.0L I6 Three inch lift from IRO (Springs, shocks, adjustable HD trac arm , and sway bar links) followed by Kevin's death wobble package , (basically needed to take care of steering bump). I replaced forward upper and lower control arms with HD adjustable's from IRO and new A-arm in back with HD anti sway and links . Planning to upgrade CV axle assemblies up front with chrome molly Cardans .....and upgrade transfer case to 242 or 231 (Have Quadra Trac II W/247J) .... protection for her soft underbelly , and to improve uni-body rigidity. I have not gone long arm, keeping everything short, but am beginning to question my decision, so welcome feedback in this area. Also replaced forward drive shaft with IRO conversion......am looking for input on front winch bumper and rear bumper . Still haven't decided what to do with spare. Don't like blind spot in rear-view when mounted over rear bumper, so basket up top likely. The whole project is a little challenging from a logistical standpoint as I have no second vehicle , no garage to work on it myself , and live in Jackson Hole Wyoming where shop time is a premium concern also. (One of the reasons I'm about bulletproof over high tech, that and walking -out up here is about the best way for a guy like me to loose his vehicle , a typical tow out of area's in these parts could range from 1900 to 3500 buck's , a little more than I typically have lying-about) Grin

I like a beautiful vehicle as much as anyone , but beauty to me is functional or it has no place on an off-road vehicle. When I'm in the parking lot of a mall, and some guy ahead of me has a truck that was obviously built by someone with bottomless pockets , and they slow down to 1 mile an hour for the speed bump , I want to get out of my vehicle , walk up to his , reach in and snatch the key's out of the ignition , look him square in the eye and say , "you don't deserve these" as I hurl his keys as far as I can throw them. "Have a nice day" then turn and walk back to my vehicle , get in , and drive away. Boulevard buggies are a slap in the face to every guy that wishes he could afford just once in his life , such a vehicle. But he is dreaming of the freedom , not turning heads. My goal is to know I can go anywhere an off road vehicle can go , without un-necessary risk , to myself or anyone else. That takes reliability that doesn't come cheap. It takes more than money for guy's without bottomless pockets , it takes passion and devotion and hard work. @@DEInTheGarage

Correct me if I'm wrong but Willys had 9 slots in the grill and when Ford manufactured them it went to 7 your shirt has 9. Anyway can we credit Ford for the iconic 7 slots? Loved the info thanks for sharing.
@-oiiio-3993
@-oiiio-3993 4 жыл бұрын
You've got it reversed. The stamped, nine slot, grille was introduced by Ford during production of the GPW. Willys followed immediately and used the same on the MB. When Willys modified the Grille for civilian production (CJ2A), a seven slot grille was adopted. Willys was granted trademark rights on the Jeep name and overall design, including seven slot grille, about 1950.

could someone offer their opinion. In the 1960's, in Arizona, a high school buddy's father collected cars. Among others in the garage he had a 1960's Corvair with the turbocharged Spyder engine, a brand new '63 Split window Corvette, a beat up Dodge Power-Wagon being restored and a beat up WWII era Jeep. This is 60 years ago, recalling details is a little sketchy and although everyone wanted me to be impressed with the PowerWagon my attention was focused on the Corvette. I simply walked past the Jeep and noticed a large bullet hole in the body near the door opening. The body at that location was not sheet metal, the “bullet” hole edge had extruded out like a typical tank armor hit. The hole might have been bigger than my thumb, but I was pretty skinny back then. I inspected the bullet hole and I guessed the body appeared to be about 1/2 or 3/4" thick. Hard to tell. The father told us that the metal was aluminum and I thought at the time for reduced weight. But at the time I was puzzled “if they were trying to reduce weight why so thick?” Now I am thinking that it might have been Dural that was also used in aircraft armor. Possibly the armor was on the bottom and wrapped around the bottom of the side panels? Like I said, the aqua blue colored Corvette had my attention and I did not do much investigating. Did Willys or Ford produce an armored version? Was it common? Rare? Was an armored version intended for special people? i.e. did Patton have one? I doubt that this jeep saw combat. The Jeeps were probably left to rot in Europe and few if any made it back state side. I don’t know. Maybe it was a factory one-of experimental mockup with a test shot? Any thoughts on this?
