Good work. One fun note you missed is the birth of the SJ Cherokee was the lack of support for the Jeep Commando reboot. By taking the Brooks Stevens design Wagoneer and creating a two door first of its name Sport Utility Vehicle, the legend was born. I owned a '77 Wagoneer (Pre-Grand era) powered by AMC's 401 topped with a factory 4V Rochester spreadbore. Nice carb IF you get it dialed in right. Annoyances were the EGR valve that always carbonized in the open position and the ludicrous air pump injection system that increase the temps at the exhaust ports allowing the exhaust manifolds to glow red without towing anything. Modded a pair of tube headers with the air pump system to inject the air down-pipe and still passed emissions even thought I couldn't ever get more than 10.3mpg on the highway. Was a towing beast with an RV cam and Crower ball-fulcrum rockers. Even with 7500 pounds and a load leveling hitch she rode like a Caddy. Putting it in 4-Low then reaching into the glove box to turn the valve to lock the front and rear driveshafts together would allow you to pull stumps, plow snow drifts and various other fun stuff without breaking a sweat. Oh, and if you ever did put chains on, well, that was just the icing on the cake as you pulled everyone out of ditches, including that semi's tractor so you can get home to a hot meal. Was the greatest Jeep I regret selling and still kicking myself for it. Cheers!

Needs serious work (roof is fubar, for instance) but just can't junk it. As far as i can tell it's the only 82 Cherk still registered with the UK DMV. 'Rare', redefined. Also had three XJ's. one of which was LPG (propane) converted, which ran just fine on the 4L. LPG conversions were popular here, at least for while, as propane was 1/2 the price of gas(oline).

When all was said & done it started right up

Hey Doug would it be possible to put the 401 in an XJ? Or would it tear the unibody apart?

What about 1991? 4.0 Straight 6? I have a chance to buy one for $500.00 I own 98 st6 4.0. put 1500.$ into it. Works great. Does have an occasional over rev to 4000rpms. Have to open gas and oil cap to make it stop.

The only reason the wagoneer was stopped in 1990 was the fact that Chrysler ran out of the amc parts to make them. That’s the sole reason, which kinda saddens me. My 1993 xj would look amazing with the wood paneling and the special grille and headlight stack.
@toledojeeper29325 жыл бұрын
I worked at Toledo Jeep Assembly and I really dont believe parts was the issue ..it was sales . The Wagoneer line was so slow you could barely see it move ...you had over 4 minutes to do your job and they were getting laid off every other week .

The sj is a absolutely beautiful Jeep, and I think the square lights are pretty cool, accept on Xj, the stock ones are dull as hell so I've got some badass LED ones 👌

I have seen a few XJ's running around with the new LED headlights installed. Anything special about installing them or are they plug and play replacements?
@simplyjeep54955 жыл бұрын
@@wildbill23c yeah they basically are plug and play lights, like the ones I have on my XJ. accept for the DRls ( angle lights ) those require you to tap into the negative on both drl lights on either side ( both driver and passenger side lights ) it basically allows you to pull the button out once, turning your DRls on and those angle lights. Im also just about to put a new post on my insta on the light install, might be a little more helpful there, but if you got a question just ask I'll help anyway I can. 😊

@@simplyjeep5495 Wishing I would have got an XJ now instead of a ZJ, far more limited on accessories for the ZJ's to include the LED lights. I've found LED bulbs, or complete front replacement assemblies including the turn signals and such but they're not cheap. Guess I'll keep what I got and try and get into an XJ in the near future. At least you don't have to have a tool box full of tools to do the LED conversions in the XJ's unlike those HID bulb conversions that required some weird stuff to get them to work and no guarantee they'd ever work LOL.

You know there is possibly for why the lights are dull one your alternator is not working at its peak performance or your Serpentine is worn causing slipage an last one is the seal around your halogen lights has every soo slightly split causeing condensation an glazing over your lenses overtime causing a cataracts affect
@simplyjeep54955 жыл бұрын
@@SPEEDY1894 yeah you are completely correct about my alternator😂 It completely failed about a month after I got the lights on, had to replace it of course and now the led lights work alot better 👍

OK...so there is a complete and definite line between Cherokee and Grand Cherokee? Is your channel a resource for GC, or just Cherokee? I'm a ZJ guy looking for info...to me, they are both older but sturdy Jeep chassis...I like the older ZJ stuff but- I ain't got one.
@DEInTheGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hey Buddy, We started as a Grand Cherokee channel. Between the two of us we have 2 WJs and a ZJ. We previously owned an XJ, so there is some XJ content here as well. We enjoy talking about all Jeeps, but our current repair/modification content is gear towards Grand Cherokees. There is no connection between the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. At times that have shared angines, but that is it. The Grand Cherokee (1993) was supposed to replace the XJ Cherokee, but sales of the XJ stayed up, so they kept them both and kind of made things confusing.

Thanks for the reply. I was afraid to get rid of my 98 GC Loredo after I bought my '15 cherokee trailhawk last summer. Didn't trust all of the electronics, etc, but I can't do any more road trips in the 98. With it's 6cyl, I have to turn off AC just to pass trucks, and it sucks gas like crazy. I just put $1800 into having a shop refresh the front end for my son to drive, everything was worn or frozen. I still want to keep it around. Of course, the heater core is starting to make gurgle noises again, so it's time to monitor the coolant level...never ends with old cars.

Wow for someone banging on about the Cherokee and it's history, you'd think about how "iconic" the SJ was, then he has no idea about the BW-1339 full time symmetrical 4x4 system. It was not a NP- anything, it was a BW-1339 made by Borg Warner, no viscous coupler at all, instead it used two cast iron cones with clutches for slippage.

We actually have an MY2000 4.0 Orvis, with a Dana 35 rear end. It's fantastic! Believe it or not, I was the one who actually wrote about the trim on Wikipedia - after we bought it, I was shocked to see there was nothing about it, so I wrote about what ours came with 😁 I still haven't been able to find almost anything about it. I'd love to see some commercials and publicity for it, the only video there is from a real reviewer is the one Hammond did years back. Yes, it does have bonnet vents, and they don't go anywhere - although it would be great if they did. It also has a wing, which also came on the French (? I believe) Wild Sport trim, which was a 2-door 'Mounty' with some extra bits on it. The brake light in the wing is actually a Hella part, which I find odd. Virtually everything seems nicer in ours than any other XJ they ever made; all doorcards have leather and wood on them, and all the headrests have the Orivs logo embossed into them. It's a shame that some of our woodgrain's lacquer has gotten quite cloudy over the years, though I imagine that's something we'll figure out at some point. It's funny, some of the wood seems to have been simply stuck on top of the existing plastic panels - especially on the surround for the shifter - it's quite obvious 😛 Even the floormats have an Orvis logo riveted into them! Thanks for the great video, and thanks so much for including a bit about our prized Orvises! There are under 300 of the 4.0s left now!
@DEInTheGarage5 жыл бұрын
No kidding.. you wrote the Wiki article?? That is where I had to get some info on the Orvis because there was so little info in the world
@georgegreen13495 жыл бұрын
@@DEInTheGarage Yeah, I did write about the Orvis trim. I think I actually spotted it before we bought it, because I didn't know what the trim actually was - I thought that even here in the UK, the highest you could get was the Limited. When I wrote on there too, I had no idea how much of a following they had on the Jeep forums, and I didn't think they were anywhere near as rare either. One of the interesting things about it are that the seats aren't actually heated. I originally thought they were, being electric and everything - but I think it must be the kind of leather they're made out of. Quite weird though, I would've liked heated seats! As far as I've looked though, it seems that ours, along with some of the others in the run between '99 and '01, have the 0331 head. With about 104k on ours, I'm keeping an eye, but we seem to still have pretty decent oil pressure, and good temps too. The biggest killer of any XJ in the UK is rust, because of our typical weather. The sills rot out, and because it's a unibody, that's classed as structural damage, so the car won't pass our 'MOT'. The Orvis is only just starting to get more pricey, but before, it was cheaper to scrap it any buy a new one, than to fix it - all of £1500 or less used a few years back. Ours is fine though, because funnily enough, ours come with thick OEM underseal optioned onto it ( 'XPB: UNDERCOATING' on the build sheet) - bedliner kinda stuff - something I've never seen on another XJ since.

Jeep did away with the vacuum disconnect 2 piece front axle in the 91 XJs not 97, and all Chrysler 8.25s are c clip axles. Also the 4.0 auto XJs at least from 96 up all had 3.55 gearing, my 97 auto has a tow and up country package and it still came with 3.55 gears.

You can own RH drive vehicles in the USA. I guess depending where you live they may not allow them. I know a lot of guys that own RH imports (civics, rx7s etc..) if the vehicle is over 25yrs old it don't have to meet DOT or emission standards. That is why the price of 1990+ skylines has tripled.
