Deion had no obligations to the Braves. The Falcons were his obligation. They were his real team they held his rights. Like Deion said his contract with Braves ran out in July. He was helping out Braves when he didn’t have to.

mel bias He never said “there was nothing in it for Deion”, he said there was no obligation from him to the Braves and you’re proving his point. Historically, Deion never did anything unless there was something in it for him and in this situation there was something in it for Deion (Future Money) and for Prime (Publicity). It was all business from Deion’s side and he was the one that had everything to lose in that situation if he got hurt while playing with the Braves.

Deion didn’t explain it like he should have. Deions contract was up July 31st. Therefor there could be no way he could promise to not play football if the braves went to the playoffs. That’s part 1. Part 2 is the braves owner claims deions agent had a handshake deal of same said above agreement. Deion denies this also. The big problem was that Tim McCarver decided during more than one broadcast to defame Deion about continuing to play football and how unethical it was, what a lack of character it showed etc. Tim’s big comment was that Deion should have been in breach of contract for his actions. I think Tim had at least two different rants about this the worst being during the playoffs. Tim had a real tone of disgust with Deion and it’s something we would never hear nowadays really even back then either. If it had been said nowadays McCarver would have no doubt been in trouble and reprimanded but back then he was the ex good ole boy catcher turned announcer from the old school. Honestly I’m shocked Tim wasn’t sued for slander. I’m sure he would have been nowadays. Tim McCarver was wrong. Tim thought he was right based on the information he received but whomever told him the details of deions contract was incorrect on the details and Tim failed to verify his info before going several on air rants about what a pos no count guy Deion was etc. I really don’t like the skinny old white guy in the 30 for 30 that was interviewed on Tim McCarvers behalf because he insinuated that after Deion threw the water on Tim that Tim’s comeback of you’re a real man Deion meant that if Tim was younger that he would have beat Deions ass. I’m not kidding this skinny white man is some baseball guy I think but he was gritting his teeth and so mad during the 30 for 30. Whoever he is he is in love with Tim McCarver for some reason. Long story short. Tim got bad information about Deions contract and defamed Deion on air several times, was in the wrong about what he said and that’s why water was dumped on him

He assaulted him. Sanders is complaining right here about not having a microphone and any other forum for rebuttal. Yes he did. There was TV and print media everywhere, and in this instance he could have gone right up to McCarver and his microphone and stated his case for playing both games. This would have been more effective and definitely more honorable.

he Sanders couldnt play because he was too sore to play from Football. This was proved just the other day by Bob Costas. all McCarver point was Braves were trying to win the world series and Football it was early in the season. why not prioritize the team thats is in the post season thats is all McCarver point was. but for Deion was about Deion. how could he make more of a bigger name for himself. now McCarver had alot of restraint. McCarver was a football player that got scholarships to play for Tennessee and Notre Dame but decided to play baseball and made it to the major leagues at 17. McCarver is 53 when Deion dumped that water on him. not once but twice. McCarver was about to go down stairs and start a fight and anyone knows him McCarver would have killed Sanders. Sanders was fast but McCarver was a beast and a bull. Sanders got Lucky McCarver friends a colleagues talked him out of it.

Funny. I covered prep sports for about 15 years in another life and all the best I saw that made it to the pros were 2 or 3 sport athletes. Seen dozens and dozens do the "specialize" thing and never do squat. What I learned is this. They'll teach you most of that at the next level. What you need to learn at the HS (or younger) level is how to compete and to develop the will to compete. Deion Sanders didn't become Prime Time because he specialized in one sport. He was Prime Time because he competed and succeeded at every sport he tried. Look at your great QB's. Almost all have baseball backgrounds. Your best RBs and WR's probably played hoops and/or ran track.

There has always been this stigma surrounding the black athlete. If you’re ‘brash’ and can back it up with your performance the establishment (white media) condemns you. Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali….. But if you’re quiet and humble and you excel in your sport and go about your business the establishment (white media) accepts you. Joe Louis, Joe Frazier….. And this is not to denigrate legends that are quiet and humble. Outside of Ali I prefer quiet and humble. But I don’t mind brash as long as you can back it up.

When I was a kid, I loved Deion. We all did. Deion and Bo Jackson were the coolest guys to us young ones. But in my older age, I read the story of his altercation with Carlton Fisk. Carlton comes from the old school of baseball. Being flashy was disrespectful. At this point in time, Ken Griffey Jr and Rickey Henderson we’re the only ones that could get away with it. Fisk got annoyed when sanders popped up and didn’t run the ball out, so he yelled at Deion, “run the fucking ball out next time”, from behind home plate.. (if you don’t know, Fisk was catching for the white Sox and sanders was a yankee). The next at bat, Deion said to Fisk, “the days of slavers are over”. Reading that, I lost a lot of respect for Deion. Being black doesn’t mean you get to use racism or slavery every time someone is critical of you. Worst part of it all is that at the time, Deion was horrible at baseball. Griffey and Henderson could do it because they backed it up with how damn good they were. But I believe Deion was batting with a sub .200 batting average. Confidence is good. It’s necessary. But there’s a difference between confidence and arrogance. This particular altercation was just arrogant on sanders part. And it’s worse that he brought “racism” into a situation where it wasn’t necessary.

I can’t stand McCarver. He tried his best to ruin the Red Sox first two championships with his shitty broadcast of the 04 and 07 World Series.
@stephenkammerling9479
@stephenkammerling9479 Жыл бұрын
McCarver didn't seem to like the 05 Chicago White Sox very much either. In game 2 of the World Series it was tied in bottom of 9th in Chicago on a cold rainy night when the Astros(they were still in National League) brought in reliever Brad Lidge to pitch. He had recently given up some huge home runs. McCarver was asked(he was part of broadcast team) how Lidge's confidence would be affected. McCarver said, Lidge's confidence wouldn't be affected at all. In the midst of his comments a White Sox batter(Podsednik) hits a walk off homer through the cold, wind, and rain. As Podsednik rounds the bases, McCarver was nearly in tears and was asking "How do these things happen?" I've never before or since heard so much bias from an announcer in a nationally televised game. White Sox went on to sweep the Series. Of course as a Cub fan, I didn't care much for McCarver because I thought he was a shill for the Mets. As for Lidge's misfortune, he went on to have success in future seasons.

People have no earthly idea the immense talent & skill to not only be able to play 2 sports professionally, but do it simultaneously. I was a decent 2 sport athlete myself. I played hockey & baseball at a D2 school in the Northeast - kinda lol.. I arrived in September of 1991, settling into classes & baseball practices daily 330-530pm. After meeting a few hockey players, I mentioned although I was there on baseball scholarship, I played Jr A hockey in Canada just last season. Word got around & hockey coach calls me to ask it I’d consider playing hockey as well - as long as baseball was OK with it. Coach agreed. Hockey practices were from 7-830am, then classes till 3pm, baseball practice 330-530pm, 3 evenings/week - night class 6-730pm. Between all that, try to find time to eat, get my weight training in etc. The first few weeks were ok, but as the class work and practices progressed, it became difficult to keep up in all 3, something had to give. I ended up missing a few AM classes I was doing well in. I’d use the time to catch up in classes I was struggling in. Dumb idea. Although I was doing well on the field & ice, academically I was close to the GPA cutoff which would have disqualified me from playing any varsity sports had my grades dropped. I decided at Christmas break that I needed a clean slate. I decided to transfer to a JUCO in mid Atlantic area & focus on academics & baseball only in that spring ‘92. Things worked out, I was drafted in June ‘92, didn’t quite make it to the big leagues, but got to play with & against guys who turned out to be pretty good players - Jeter, ARod, Rivera, Manny, etc . I also got to play against the biggest joke in baseball history - MJ. I also got to play with an amazing 2 sport athlete that many people don’t even remember - Brian Jordan. He was an absolute physical specimen. I had some good pop & launch in BP as good as anyone. Until one day lol. Generally , Our BP was group of 4-6 players. Depending on the day. One day, this little utility guy was first up, slapping balls barely getting to the OF. I step in next, take my 10 swings - 7 were absolutely crushed, 1 ground ball & 2 pop ups. I’m feeling pretty good about myself. In steps Brian Jordan, who pretty much had the same round as me - except all his 7 moonshots were much more difficult -all opposite field lol. Next guy comes up, first swing - half way up the light tower still rising. Second swing, a line Drive just over the SS head - it hit the light tower no more than 10 feet off the ground. Incredible to watch. The sound coming off their bats was like an explosion. His name was Ozzie Canseco BTW. My ego has never recovered from that day 😅lol.

I lost all respect for Deion Sanders after the water thing. Does not matter who said what - words are one thing but disrespecting someone else by what I consider stupid violence has never been acceptable. To me it is like road-rage. Even if you are right you are wrong. If Sanders were a true man he would have apologized for his actions. The way he should have handled it was to call McCarver and give him a piece of his mind. I watched McCarver for years, say what you want about him, but he was true to himself and if he was wrong he would have apologized on air and that would have been it. Deion Sanders admits he was a baseball bench rider and did not want to sit on the bench in the cold with his baseball team. Fine. Then don't disrespect the sport by playing a stunt acting like you are doing the Braves a favor as if you were Bo Jackson. In the end Deion chose the right sport. He did not need to be an a-hole in the process. Bobby Cox and Tim McCarver didn't do his 30-30 because that was a stunt too and those old-school former baseball players weren't going to give a stunt any credibility. Deion was not Bo Jackson or Dick Groat.

That-is-the-definition-of-THIN SKIN. "He upset my Mama?" That's pathetic. And Sanders still can't admit how absurd that was.

Hats off to Deion Sanders. Tim McCarver was two years behind me at Christian Brothers High School, Memphis, and while lauded for his athletic prowess, he was regarded as a dolt and a loudmouthed bully who walked the halls in the company of his adoring retinue of football teammates. One incident stands out in particular. There was a kid trying out for the freshman basketball team. He had a slight limp from an episode of polio, but was pretty handy with a basketball. They shared the court with McCarver and the B-team, and McCarver thought it was cool to bean this kid with a 17-ounce Reynolds basketball from across the court, typical behavior for this media darling.

Sorry. Disagree. McCarver may be a horrible person, but you respond with words to words. You don't respond with violence. Period. Deion could have gone to USA Today, ESPN, CNN whatever, and taken him down with words. He chose physical violence, even if not severe. Never right. If say Troy Aikman says something really critical of a quarterback, that the quarterback can throw a football and hit him? A hockey player could check a sportswriter for a critical article? If Dan Patrick takes down a coach, is it right for the coach to nail him physically? Are any media fair game for being critical, even if they are wrong or bad people? Deion had the Sports World's ear and attention back then. Deion wasn't trapped as he said he was about fighting against McCarver's words. That's just an excuse. He chose to respond physically. For all of the admirable things he has done, he nor the world shouldn't cross to violence to settle verbal beefs.

Course Deion really stuck in to McCarver when he batted over .500 in the World Series, which he would have won the MVP of if the Braves had prevailed (AKA if Reardon had done his job).
