Today's topic is the delayed flick, and to teach this, I had to do some MS Paint magic (so excuse the "artwork"). Armed with this understanding of game physics, you'll be able to understand WHY your delayed flick worked or failed - which you can use to improve your consistency with delayed flicks.

Great information here. I really liked the physics explanation part. It's so much easier to know what to do and how to adjust if you know what's going on behind the scenes. Your videos are getting more and more high-quality. Great work!

luchvk Thanks! I agree completely; it gets you out of that mindset where you can get frustrated because the outcome of your technique seems random. As for the quality, I just started using Adobe Premiere and I'm barely scratching the surface on what I can do... Excited for how I can better teach new concepts!

This isn't hard physics though. Understanding that the farther forward the ball is on your car, the farther forward it will go is a pretty easy concept to grasp.

@kevpert Can you do a video on team plays such as line-ups ,passes, shots. Who should be where when , etc. My teammate and I have made it to rising star , but we seem to disagree alot on the fundamentals of who should be where when on line-ups vs taking the shot. We usually play 2v2's but a 3v3 vid would be fine too. P.S. Love your vids have helped alot so far.

Hey kev, since your artworks and physics-explanations are exceptional I would love to hear some hints and/or see a tutorial on generating power from low speed. I created some shots for myself where my car starts quite close to an unmoving ball (or a ball that flies slowly away from me in some direction) and tried to generate as much power from there as I could. Well while I am obviously still struggling with rotations in the air I was surprised that I apparently still don't know how to hit a clean powershot from the midline: I placed an unmoving ball in the center circle, my car two car-lengths away and tried to bash it in without the ball touching the ground. With a clean frontflip at the center of the ball, I make it 1 out of 3 times. If I hit the ball just slightly off center, I generate way less power and can't reach the goal-zone. Why is there such a difference when my speed is the same and where/how do I need to flip in the ball to make it arc the most?
@Gr3nblatt
@Gr3nblatt 7 жыл бұрын
I fear the answer will be "flip straight into it and tap x twice as fast as you can" but I don't get what causes the major speed difference when I do this (and probably flip slightly too early or off center)

Really nice! I didn't know about the RL physics you drew in here so that is great to know. Question for you, in free play where you are lag free i find it's always easy to dribble and keep the ball from bouncing to much. How do you keep the ball from bouncing on your hood in actual games? I find that once I'm in game with a 60 or so ping Its very hard to stop the ball from bouncing which leads to a lot of missed flicks. I love Dominus for flicks because it's so long I don't have to worry as much about the bounces but when it comes to 1 v 1 I hate the low profile since it makes winning kickoffs and 50/50s pretty hard. I end up using Octane but since it's so much shorter my flics fail and I end up in front of the ball. Any tips?

Set the search filter only in your area, the game stopped lagging completely with me and I have always 24 ping max.

Yah that isn't the case, not everyone is able to get that kind of ping. I'm in Canada and the best I've ever had is around 45 ms. In fact I'm west but I get a better ping on east by an average of 10 ms. Just how the ISP's choose to route traffic

Hey kevpert. Your animations are great. Is there a website or a resource that shows the very center of each cars hit box visually like you represented them on this video? Where forward to backward the straight up and down arrow that shows the perfect vectors for carrying the ball on the top of the car is? For all the cars of course, thanks

Paul Schubert - Hey Paul, go to reddit.com/u/Varixai, and find his most recent Hitbox spreadsheet post. You may have to go back a couple months because he hasn't updated it for a while, but it has all cars before the Animus/Centio update. Look for the Pivot Point data.

Sorry if I'm being annoying. I found the data but is there anywhere where it's visualized. Visualized like you did in the video so I can SEE on each car or specifically bat mobile where that perfect upward vector is. My brain is very visual and reading the numbers I can't turn the concept of that into where on the car.

Hey Kevpert, I have been struggling to do backwards flicks with a low projectery. I find myself in so many situations where I could use these, but I always fail, and the ball gets infront of my car before I even flick. Could you make a tutorial on this, or explain it to me by replying? I know you have made a video covering this, but it just doesn't work for me. Great video anyways. You deserve way more subscribers, for this quality content.

WolfbitingSheep Hmm, which car do you use? Cars with a long nose like the Breakout make this especially easy. But anyway, what you have to do is fly past the ball with boost before back flipping. That means the ball needs to be balanced further back on your car (during the dribble) before you attempt to jump, tilt back, and boost in front of the ball before backflipping.
@hmmm6265
@hmmm6265 7 жыл бұрын
Kevpert Thanks for replying :D I use the Dominus GT. But about what you said: balancing the ball on the back part of my car. If I do that, I get a high projectery. I´ll try boosting past it though, when I get back from vacation. But I would think it will go even higher? I will experiment with it, and keep in mind what you said. Thanks again for replying.

which car do you recommend playing ranked? I usually use the octane/ venom or xdevil, and for freestyling dominus. And another question.. So basically if the ball is at the back of a car you can give the ball a lot of hight, and if it's at the front more momentum or just a lower shot? I'm pretty good at flicking and I usually use the front of my car to do it.

Brett Harris I usually try side flicks and also try to make sure you're going the same speed as the ball. Ideally you should dribble to the point when the ball is no longer making those little impact sparks on the hood(basically matching ball speed). I'd say that will have a significant impact on your flicks.

Tobbe59 The center of mass is closer to the middle of the car, so I like how you can get from balancing the ball on the front of the car (to build speed) to a delayed flick relatively quickly, compared to a Breakout or Dominus. Same hitbox as the Dominus, with slightly better turning as well... So kind of a no brainer for me.

If you're using octane you have to keep the ball really close to the middle of the car, but I don't recommend octane to do flicks, it's too short. I've always played with octane, and I can't get used to the other cars. If you are like me, you have to practice a LOT of timing :v

Touro vermelho produções e gameplays thats not the issue and youll know that if youve seen dappur play in 1s. if anything the octane is the right length for flicks in 1v1 because flicks with cars like the breakout are far too powerful.

Why does the nose of your car move down when you move your joystick down?
@Kevpert
@Kevpert 7 жыл бұрын
Even though you're jumping and tilting up, when the ball is far forward on the nose of your car, the ball will actually force the nose of the car down. For some cars, you can use this to immediately flick the ball and get that delayed flick effect (e.g. X-Devil), whereas on other cars with longer noses (e.g. Breakout), you actually have to tilt down.

I'd beg to differ, 100% elastic collisions do exactly what you showed as 'normal physics' but in non elastic collisions there is a loss of momentum normal to the surface and a loss of momentum parallel with the surface, dough I don't think Rocket league simulates the latter. That's for the walls, the vehicles dough seem to work as you explained. Oh and heat due to friction (etc..), but again, I don't think Rocket league simulates it.

I kinda feel that this tutorial is somewhat incomplete. Let's take your bounce dribbling video for example. What I loved about that tutorial was, that you did not just provide the viewer with the information on how to execute bounce dribblings but you gave me a set of tools to answer and more importantly how to create certain scenarios. So now whenever I an opportunity to set this up, I'm like "OK buddy, let's play a minigame called bounce dribbling." . I kinda miss that in this video and still have some question marks floating over my head. Like what is the main difference between a delayed and a regular flick? Is it the arc? The distance the ball travels? Is the delay big enough to be utilised as a mindgame? Can it be used in close quarters? Can I self sabotage this consistently and basically pop the ball only a few meters ahead instead of properly shooting it. And what a the leading arguments that should be going through my head while juggling the ball on my roof at the middle line to come to the conclusion,"OK bois, this is gonna be a delayed flick." . I know most of this might be redundantent, and it might be myself looking for mysteries and complexities at places where there are non to find and it's just a flick with badass power behind it. But I also though back then I had an idea on bounce dribbling, but realized I knew jack after seeing your video. In the end though I feel I need a bit more incentive to learn a move as disguntingly hard to learn/master as the delayed flick + air roll. From an explantory side I have 0 complains regarding this video, your presentation has been always top notch(aside of the paint illustrations :> ).

Bored Banana First of all, just a huge thanks for your post, it's really got me thinking. The reason why this tutorial is much shorter and only focuses on the technical side is because of two things: the audience it's intended for and the scope I set for the tutorial. You're right, delayed flicks are a hard and limited skill, since they're only really useful in 1s and maybe a little bit of 2s. This tutorial is going to have the most use for players in the champion ranks in 1s, who are already convinced that they need to include attacking moves like delayed flicks to get them to the next level. For players ranked below that, they probably have other salient skills they need to work on first before tackling delayed flicks, but it's ultimately up to them if they want to learn this or not. As for scope, one of the problems I had with my past tutorials was that they were so large that it took me 6 weeks to complete a tutorial, since really, each tutorial was multiple tutorials in one. That made me dread tackling a new tutorial, so slimming down the process has made it much easier for me to handle, and now I can more easily make tutorials (as opposed to taking 3 month breaks in between). Having said all that, I agree that my tutorials should have little in-game clips of when to use a certain skill; I'll make sure to include that in my future tutorials. To answer your specific questions, delayed flicks are all about increasing power compared to standard flicks. Tilt less, and you can fling the ball 2/3rds of the pitch length (best when a player is shadowing you), and at close quarters, you can tilt more for lower shots. I guess you could "self-sabotage" and do a weaker flick so that you can get a second touch, but I'd recommend pop dribbling instead, since you maintain possession of the ball the whole time (that'll be the topic of one of my future tutorials). As for mindgames, just hitting one long-range delayed flick is the biggest mindgame of all - players will back off if they're concerned you're gonna do that again, so that's when you use the space to get closer or move into pop dribbling/bounce dribbling.

www.rocketleaguetrainer.com/p/download if you're on PC, otherwise you'd have to wait until the December update to set up your own shots through the new custom trainer coming to Rocket League. Haha best of luck!

Definitely doable for the Octane, especially for the long distance delayed flicks (with the higher arc).

Needs a ton of practice. Took me a good 30 minutes per day for a couple weeks to get to where I was in this video.

Just personal preference, just like how it feels over a PS4 controller. It does have squared input, but there are tools like Durazno that can do that for you on any controller.
