Just going to clear a few things up. This is in ohio, United States. This is not representative of all railroads in the us. This is a shortline, that sees little traffic per day. The class 1's, that make several billion per year, have rails that are in such good shape you can run 100+ car trains at 70 mph. They have better maintenance because they can afford it. This shortline cannot afford to fix all their track at once and they probably wont for a while. Also, as long as they are slow and careful and follow the fra's regulations on transporting over 'bad track' its perfectly fine to run on track like this
@jacksainthill89749 жыл бұрын
MAC s. Dear me, simmer down a bit, mate. Just because you're American, that doesn't make Americans exempt from being shit at at certain things, just like anyone else. So the USA doesn't know how to maintain a railway properly? That's fine, the rest us, who do know, aren't going to mind. It's your business.
@Danvers979 жыл бұрын

@MadPatter669 жыл бұрын
+Keyboard Dancers I'm sure that is FRA exempted track. That is a designation for industrial spurs (and infrequent use). Speed limit on exempted track is 5mph. To get a track to an FRA grade isn't cheap. Very old rail, ties are rotted and split, and the rail looks like 20 foot sections fishplated together. I know there's a couple short passenger lines in Eastern Ohio, but I think they have maybe Grade 2 (25 mph max speed). I do notice a few ties have been replaced, and there's 10-foot sections up to the road. The ties are sunk into the ballast, and some erosion is apparent.If it derails, it's not going very fast. I didn't see any gauge bars (keeping the rails from spreading), which I expected.
@ariesamit019 жыл бұрын
+MadPatter66 He he he! Speed limit of 5mph! Pinnacle of FUEL WASTAGE! "I WASTE coz I can afford"
@interstellarsurfer7 жыл бұрын
It's not wasting fuel, when you're driving a modern diesel electric that can dynamically cut out engine cylinders to save fuel. It *is* a relative waste of the engine and crews time. This train is obviously working a minor spur line, so it's not worth the investment.

People worried about the train tipping over: You should know that the center of mass on any train is insanely low to the ground. The undercarriage is massive steel, while the top parts are at best hollow steel hoppers, but more likely aluminium housings. The proportion isn't even 1 to 4 on an empty cart.
@Dragon.77228 жыл бұрын
+Scy I think the center of mass is way higher on the locomotive.
@Dragon.77228 жыл бұрын
***** Uhm, those are Diesel locomotives, right? I don't think they have an electrical engine. The crankshaft goes straight to the wheels.
@Scy8 жыл бұрын
Diesel engines in trains are actually there to produce electricity. The real term is diesel-electric. So instead of a transformer in electric trains (taking power from overhead or a third rail and converting it to manageable voltages and/or currents), it has a diesel engine that powers a generator that again gives the train power. So you could in theory produce the exact same mechanical setup (propulsion, brakes) for electric and diesel, just replace the power source, and leave the rest as it is. And there are examples of this, maybe most noticeably in certain older mass produced shunter types, but also some regular locomotives. I think Germany is where you look if you want to investigate further.

The worst track I saw was one of two locations: a spur to the newspaper company in Chattanooga, TN or a side track in Lavonia GA. Neither was a visually stimulating as the telescopic view in the video. The track in TN was tangent (straight) located under Southern Railway's old main line. There were at least 5 rail lengths that had no spikes attached, where the rail sat 3+ inches above the ties with no equipment on it. Trains actually operated on it; as they were the cause of the removed spikes. After pushing the rail and ties downward repeatedly the rebounding rail eventually wore down the spikes/ties so that the spikes no longer held the tie to the rail. With time the rebounding rails pulled the spikes out of the wallowed out holes in the ties. Eventually the spikes fell off the base of the rail to the ground due to there own weight. The GA track was filled up to the top of the rail with dirt so it was difficult to see how bad the track was. After cleaning off the track, nothing resembling a tie could be found. There were some pieces of pine heart wood in the dirt where a tie once existed..

"Railway" and "regulations" are words that you hardly ever see together in the US. The government can only regulate the speed on which a train travels, but repairs and maintenance are completely up to the company that owns it.
@PNWRailfan9 жыл бұрын
It's funny seeing people generalize all railroads in the US and think they all look like this, when they don't know a single thing about how american railroads operate. All our railroads are private companies, meaning that small, poor companies will have less maintained tracks, while most of our tracks, maintained by class 1 railroads, are very well maintained and capable of running 100+ car trains.
@jovetj9 жыл бұрын
+PNWRailfan *private. That's how it's spelled. Many Europeans are very ignorant about the US because what they hear about it is filtered and biased. But the same is true about Americans' views of other parts of the world, too. Not all small companies are necessarily poor. Running any business successfully means being skilled at knowing when and where to spend your money. Railroads are private businesses, though most do receive some public funding of some sort. But unlike many other businesses, railroads have to completely invent and maintain their infrastructure. Trucking companies don't directly have to create and maintain all the roads they're on, just their trucks. Same for airlines, or boat shipping companies. Railroads have to create and maintain it all by themselves: tracks, bridges, locomotives, signals, etc. All of it! When a railroad is struggling to stay in business, monies for things like regular track maintenance dry up. Eventually such a railroad may go out of business entirely. Sometimes those poorly maintained tracks get sold to a new or different railroad. Such railroads can't control the state of their infrasturcture when they inherit it. They can only control when they repair it. The more business they generate, the more revenue they receive, and the more money they can divert back into improving their infrastructure. Derailments are expensive too, so obviously they want to avoid those. It's all a process and it takes time.
@PNWRailfan9 жыл бұрын
Jovetj I do agree. Thanks for the "private" spelling correction. I'll change it right away.

this has nothing with maintenance and not taking care about tracks, this is just an "speed bump" for trains when they are crossing unsecured rail roads points...

And the NTSB is okay with this Track in this Condition?
@ArtR00019 жыл бұрын
+Donald Thomas NTSB doesn't make rules. They suggest rules and regulations. The FRA administers the rails.

TO TRY TO RUN A TRAIN OVER SUCH RAILS IS ASKING FOR A DERAILMENT HOW STUPID.

Kudos to the guy shooting the vid. He's got balls as big as church bells. That train looks like it's only needing a stiff breeze to make it topple over and he's right next to it.

Oh God, that things just ripe for a derailment at any time now.

So by having bad tracks the trains travels slower?
@jovetj9 жыл бұрын
+Emanuel Najera Yes. The absolute allowed speed limit is directly dependent on the quality of the track.

I can see they have replaced a lot of ties, and sprayed some herbicide... They need some heavier rail though!

Perfect example of the conditions in that third world country known as the usa.
@AdhamOhm8 жыл бұрын
I'm betting you probably live in a country where the trains have to be shut because the "wrong type of snow" fell on the tracks.
@JohnSmith-pd1fz8 жыл бұрын
Adam Ohm Oh yes! And most of them have been on strike all this week. The wrong snow and the leaves come later.

Alright Mr.Smith, tell me how on almost all other railroads in the US, freight trains can reach 40-60 miles per hour if we’re in a third world country? Seems like people like you with blow any situation out of proportion just to get whatever joy comes out of complaining. If you did it to actually bring up a controversial point you would do a thirty second search on the internet and find millions of videos of US trains on good track. But then again, you wouldn’t be able to complain if you did that, and I know you couldn’t live without that
