I think it was Eric Burdon of The Animals fame, The British Invasion, who wrote of music, "it's all meat from the same bone"- I just "discovered" him Sept. 2022, via Pete Seger and Stringbean- on the KZbin page, as I read about the awful murder of Stringbean and his wife, for a paltry sum, I saw this "cat"- I figured he was Hee Haw country which I don't know much about but seeing him, naturally as a LOVER OF ALL GENRES- CLASSICAL AND JAZZ AND MEDIEVAL PASSION PLAYS! I LOVE IT ALL, EVEN RAP, ( only in small doses) - I'll be frank, I suffer from a chronic emotional illness which gives me something nasty and soul-sapping called "suicide ideation" about 2% of the population on North America has this illness and a sizeable chunk- screwed-up sleep cycle, pardon my poor vocabulary and digressions, segues- a fair percentage DO commit The Big Chill- I loathe being my age, I hate everything about, After 60- the only "golden" aspect is dear, David Bowie's song, Golden Years- I have to have my "mug shot" health card for Canadian Medicare done tomorrow- in past seeing my homely face I HAVE swallowed handfuls of Valium- then I HEAR THIS EXTRAORDINARY MUSICIAN, THIS WISE MAN TALKING ABOUT MUSIC, PEOPLE, THEIR IDIOSYNCRASIES, PEACE, WAR, LOUSY PANDEMICS AND GENERAL, BLAH ZEITGEIST- MONEY- SEEMS TO ME A MUSICIAN ONCE WANTED TO TELL A STORY- THINK OF THE MEDIEVAL MINSTRELS, TRAVELING AROUND KEEPING HISTORY AND PUTTING IT TO MUSIC ON THE LUTE OR THE PIPES- folk musicians supported each other as did country apparently- my weakest musical era- the blues cats he speaks of are heroes of mine- "little things meant so much" - at 80 he's SO FULL OF ZEST, WAXES LYRICAL ON LIFE, MUSIC, UPS AND DOWNS- DEATH! IS THE LAST THING ON HIS MIND! I am not musical but damn when I feel like crap MUSIC IS HERE! He couldn't play but he knew he was "home" he had a calling- BLESS ALL MUSICIANS, EVEN RAP MUSICIANS WHO OUTTA STOP KILLING EACH OTHER-and Stingbean, invented drop-crotch pants! Check him out. Thanks for posting. I'm so tired of being up all night, lonely- thank the universe for guys like this, for music! Namaste from Canada

@@MSYNGWIE12 It sure sounds to me as if you have something of importance to add to the support of all genres of music. I attended two of his cruises as a band member with Jimmy Hall from Wet Willie. I did not approach Delbert when I saw him on the ship because he always had a lot of people that wanted his time. He saw me passing by and called me over to tell me I did a great job in the band, and even made the remark that I was a hell of a singer. Very generous, very thoughtful, and very badass is that man.

I saw Delbert many years ago at Mohegan Sun's Wolf Den. I had a couple of his albums and went to see him. There he was in a smaller but very nice venue in the middle of the casino, playing with a free admission. For not charging a ticket or door charge, it was a hell of a show. No cheap production. He had about a 10 piece band with a full horn section.

I was born & raised in north Louisiana. I was a disc jockey at two radio stations when I was around 20 yrs old. The station received promo music all the time from artists for airplay. I was a rebel and played music that was not approved by the program director. Funny how my show was the most popular one! I first heard of Delbert with his song “Victim of Life’s Circumstances. I’d play that song & others. I’ve been buying Delbert’s music ever since. I moved to Texas in 1977. Delbert is a Texas treasure!

We got hip to Delbert's music in the 70's. We lived in Houston and he played the small venues around town about once a year. We bought the records and went to every show we could get to. He even played at the opening of a new toll road where he played at a toll booth! His style and music hit me like an arrow to the heart. It left us happy, glad we'd seen him, uplifted about life. We shared it with as many friends and family as we could. I've always said that if you're not having a good time at a Delbert show, it's coz you've passed out. There's never been anything like it. We're blessed to have seen him, to have heard the songs, and to have shared him with others. God Bless Delbert.

Bypass surgery like all surgeries is scary. Something can always go wrong. A heart surgeon said to me, "I am going to attempt a triple bypass on your wife". (Always a risk). To have made it through heart surgery alone is such a thing to be thankful for. When I played in cover bands I always loved playing, "Every Time I Roll The Dice". What a cool song, it gets you Rockin' and Rollin' twice at the intro. (Very ingenious).

You also need to mention how giving he is to his fans and friends. I didn’t know who Delbert McClinton was until 1989 when I heard the song I’m With You and I did everything I could to find out who he was and to see him in person. I wanted to meet him. So I succeeded and couldn’t get enough of him. His music makes you forget all you problems and just be there with him and enjoy yourself and dance. He is the best at what he does. I love that he has won the Grammies because that means his peers recognizes how talented he is and is the best.

Thank you both for your time and the interview. I met Mr. Delbert in the 90's. He couldn't have been nicer. He even signed my CDs & cassette tape, which I had brought. You see, I had just lost my dad to cancer, and I was feeling pretty low. My best friend knew how much I liked his music. Well, she read he was coming to town and was going to play in a local area bar. She bought tickets, paid for the taxi, and took me to see him perform with his band. She also paid for the beer. She was determined to help get me out my grief-stricken funk. Even if it was for one night. Although I cried, it worked. (My dad could play a pretty mean harmonica too!) I will always remember this concert with great fondness. Thanks again! btw, Red Beer is pretty darn tasty!

Delbert McClinton is one of my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I had the privilege of being in a road band and opening for Delbert at the wild horse saloon in Nashville in 1996. Being a native Texan growing up around Lubbock, I knew about Delbert and his music. To get that opportunity was a big deal for me. We were told to not talk to him by management and I get that during pre-show time . I was too intimidated anyways and star struck to have said anything anyways. His band came out and kicked some ass with Reece Wynans on B3 and Jonelle Mosser singing backup...the horn section! Damn, I still get chills thinking about how good that was....Delbert sang and played his ass off! Never Been Rocked Enough is still one of my desert island albums....If you don't have it, you need to get it! Getting to do that show has been a highlight in my music life. Texas is full of music legends and Delbert is right up there at the top!

I'm 68 and I first heard Delbert's voice from the radio in 1980 or 81' when " GIVEN' IT UP FOR YOUR LOVE " hit the airwaves. I was working in a commercial food distribution warehouse in Greenville, South Carolina and the 10th caller that day when that record was played would win $100 and yes, .... that was me ! I just knew by the soulful sound of that man's voice that he must have been a black man , but I found out he was white which really confused me because I couldn't understand how that was possible ! Since then I have seen Delbert McClinton more times than I can imagine, I lost count years ago. I have had the honor to speak with him and of course get selfies and all that but I can't think of another person who's voice has resonated so deep and pure in my mind as his has with me. I understand he's recently retired and good for him, he has paid his dues many times over. Love you man, rest and enjoy your life with Wendy and all you have worked for and enjoy life, period. Oh, and thank you for all the good times that your recording's will continue to bring. 😅

I owned a printing company and was Delberts Printer for a lot of years. In 2000 when "One of the fortunate few" came out there were these big bus bench signs at all the bus stops around Music Row. I wanted one, but didn't want to go out and steel one without Delberts permission. I was delivering the fan club newsletter at his home, and asked him if I could swipe one when it was time to change the sign, he said yeah go ahead, just wait till the life of the album is over. Three months later I was back at his home delivering another newsletter with a 3 x 8 foot long bus bench sign in the back of my truck, hoping Delbert would autograph it for me. When he raised his garage door he had one of the signs hanging on his wall too. He asked me how i got mine, and I told him I just tried to look official as I unscrewed it from the bench. He said yeah, I don't look very official, and didn't want to get caught steeling my own sign so I had a Nashville cop buddy of mine swipe it for me. My sign still hangs in my music room. Thanks Delbert, been a fan since the Mother Blues days back in Dallas.

Here’s the deal: I knew Delbert went through his triple bi-pass. So Christmas Eve of 2020 I went to see the CV Thoracic Surgeon after test showed my entire heart was barely able to pump! On December 28th I had a triple bi-pass and got my little heart pillow! Healed up great! Got the scar at the top of my left calf where they cut out my veins to use in the bi-pass. Today I’m kicking ass and taking names at 70 years of age! Charlie Goodnight and Oliver Loving blazed out the famous “Goodnight-Loving” Trail and are the true life characters that served as the models for captains “McCray and Call” of the Pulitzer Prize winning book “Lonesome Dove” by Larry McMurtry.

so loved this interview and Delbert! Have dug your podcast since 2018. I was in a band in 1981 and we covered 3 of Delbert’s songs❤ On a side note, I saw Freddie King live three times…in Calgary Alberta! He was my number 1. And when I heard Gatemouth live and had the chance to meet him a few times, it was like meeting. Count Basie. Gate was such an amazing multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and arranger.

The podcast was recorded 3 years ago - happy to have found it, and what a joy to listen to Dilbert's story. I found you when I was 16 in 1970. Loved your music and still can't figure out why you were never a big star....you've played with everyone that matters, everyone knows who you are in the industry etc. But happy your still making records. Be well Dilbert - keep on keepen' on. You are a treasure to many. HAHAHHAHA you just said keep on keepin' on on the show HAHAHAHHAHA seriously i had that in my head and typed it here 30 seconds before you said it. Blow my mind. as it should be. Cheers -
