Hey Del, on ABS bikes, the brake fluid travels to the ABS module prior to going to the brakes, else you wouldn't have ABS. If you do not introduce air into the system, you don't need to see the dealer for a fluid service. You will have a small bit of old fluid in the system, however you can mix it with the new fluid if you activate the brakes hard enough to engage ABS. The problem is most people never get on the brakes hard enough to activate ABS. Also if air does get introduced into the brake line, it must go to the dealer to hook it up to their system to electronically engage the ABS module to bleed the air out of the brake/module system.One other note about brake fluid types, DOT 5 (silicone based) is good for 10 years. DOT 4 (glycol based) is good for only 2 as you stated. If you have ABS you will have DOT 4.

Brian Laraby - you're dead right in all you say my friend, had a long chat with a dealer and they were very helpful - they said the only rule of thumb is never turn the ignition on, and don't, whatever you do, get any air in to it... but the way I see it, for what it costs, you may as well get it done once and for all, even if it was every 4yrs, it would be better than rolling around with the sludge I had in my system... great tip on DOT5 fluid, I think in the future all bikes will use that... thanks for your input buddy, much appreciated!

Hey Guys. I just recently found your channel, and could not be more grateful for what you do. you now have a loyal follower in Colorado. 3 years ago I "tried" to replace the front fork seals on my 05 Kawasaki z750s and got stuck because the inner assembly bolt was siezed. I put it aside and forgot about it, and it sat there. I found your channel and you guys lit a fire under my ass to fix my bike. so after watching your videos I finished the fork seals, replaced the chain and sprockets, replaced all of the fluids, and got it back up and running a couple of days ago. I took the bike out and took a corner at a speed that was normal for me. I didn't take into account that I was 3 years out of practice, I couldn't lean into the corner enough and ended up running into a curb, and cracking 2 engine covers and snapping the foot peg off. Luckily I was wearing my helmet and gear. I slid about 15 feet on my face, but I came out unharmed. After beating myself up about it I started researching the parts needed to fix it. Your channel, and the confidence you give me allowed me to move past the accident, and see it as an opportunity to learn more about my bike, and fix it up again. Sorry for the long winded story. I just wanted you to know that this channel helped me fix my bike, and helped me move past an accident and order the parts to fix the bike again. You are awesome, and I promise you will be seeing more of me in comments sections from here on out. So take care and ride safe, Brae

Del, the bleeder valve caps get baked dry by the Florida sun, so they: a) are hard to remove, b) often as not, crack when one tries to reseat them and c) have almost invariably become separated from their little collar tethers, so they go hiding as soon as one pops them off with a screwdriver. On Linda’s Dyna and my Road King, I have replaced them all with 7/32” rubber vacuum caps - sold in auto stores to cap off 1/4” vacuum lines. These stay in place nicely, yet remain pliable, can be removed by simply pinching the tops, look tidy on the calipers and, if I drop one, I can buy six for less than $2 at any auto parts store.

Great solution Tom, I like you're thinking... I've used plastic tyre valve dust caps in the past, just a tiny blob of clear silicone around the base of the bleed valve, they wedge on and stick in place, sealed until you need to get in there - I love these kind of solutions, don't you?!! And btw, don't expect too much sympathy for living in that glorious sunshine lol - would swop you tomorrow !

dodging the rain here in the states.....last thing on the list is the brake bleed on the fld....I cracked the nipples with a ratchet and just snugged them up....just waiting for dry weather....I will be using a diy auto bleeder where the tube will be submerged in a bottle removing any chance of air getting sucked back into the system.

Best way to DIY bleed abs is to bleed like this first and then set off the abs while riding to circulate the fluid through the valves, then bleed again. Iffy but does the trick to get the fluid that's trapped in the other chambers
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
With every respect Madeleine, I would never condone the process of deliberately trying to lock your brakes up, it could still be dangerous and I doubt very much whether it affects any air in the system anyway, but if it works for you, then by all means, that's your choice... personally, I would never do it. Be Safe.
@madeleinegillett5892
@madeleinegillett5892 5 жыл бұрын
@@Moonfleet41 in all fairness I think most bikers would run away at the proposition of deliberately locking up their brakes. However it could be done safely on the rear if the bike was up on stands securely, traction control off and then the rear brake jammed down with the clutch then pulled in to prevent stalling. Doesnt help for the front but at least for the rear. In reality, there isn't likely to be any air caught in the abs unit anyway so to any rising to the highest point in the braking system, not to mention the fact that unless you were to lock up your brakes in the first place, the air wouldn't circulate through due to the valves being shut tight in the unit. The only reason for an abs flush is just for old fluid but seeing as it wouldn't have had the opportunity to absorb water either, being in sealed chambers, it wouldn't really matter. The quantity of brake fluid would be so small compared to the lines and reservoirs that it wouldn't really be worth a dealer visit

Haha, loved the outtake Del. I recently purchased a handheld vacuum pump, just a cheap one form ebay. It came in a red plastic hard case and contains fittings, tubes and a catch pot. Cost less than £12.00 and it would be even easier then the time honoured method to just pull the fluid through. It has a gauge as well so can be used for fault finding on old school systems which is quite cool. I have a KTM 390 with ABS so I shall heed your warning when I come to do mine soon. ps might be worth mentioning for newer guys not to shake the new fluid bottle - it's a natural instinct but aerates the fluid. Thanks again!

Hi mate sorry keep asking questions 😫 got little problem here , I've purchased 2012 road king abs & front brake stiff for first 20second ride & after that work fine but the abs light is on. Now I recently changed the front wheel with 21" wheel with abs bearing come on it , I've cleaned the abs bearing sensor already , bleed both brake calipers & still does it 😵 could this be a faulty abs bearing ? I can't think anything else what made those first 10-20 seconds stiffness front brake ... Thanks 🙏🏻

Splendid advice as always Mr Delboy. However I am left somewhat perturbed having recently bled front, rear & clutch cylinders on zzr abs not realising the relevance of draining the ABS unit. On top of which, I replaced the old DOT4 with synthetic DOT5. I've done a couple of tonnes since and there seems to be the usual improvement. The silicone based DOT5 floats on DOT4 leaving me thinking it would have found it's way into all crevices, hope this isn't a silly billy fete a complit. Yours I

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I must ask again mate... you've used purple DOT5 synthetic fluid and tried to mix it with DOT4?? The reason this is a problem is because it doesn't mix, and it doesn't just sit separately on top either, eventually it will form a gel in side the system and jam everything up, am afraid the bad news (if this is what you've actually done) is take the bike to the dealer and have the full system washed out with propyl-alcohol and re-filled with a single fluid, one or the other... you must never mix these two together and they may have to strip the system completely and wash the internal parts in alcohol... and if it's already formed a gel and gone solid, you may need to replace brake hoses and other internals, so you could be in for some big bills mate - sorry it's bad news, but it's well known, that that's a big no-no... those fluids must never be mixed... my best suggestion would be to take it to the dealer, explain what you've done and see what they say... am sure they will be able to sort it out, but talk to them about what it's gonna cost, sorry it's bad news fellah... good luck with it, let us know how you get on mate...

Delboy, thanks for uploading all these great videos. I've been learning from you for a long time. From sportster maintenance to plastic welding. My question here, i recently bled the brake fluid on my 17 Ultra Limited. The front brake feels good and tight but at slow maneuvering moving the bike in the driveway, the front brake lever feels like it falls flat to the handlebar. I let it go and pull the lever again and it feels fine. Good and tight. Any ideas why it does that? I know that's not how it's supposed to feel. Thanks in advanced.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
OK, it's the same principle, but I was purely showing one simple thing... which was that you can bleed an ABS bike partially, as long as you don't get any air in, and don't turn the ignition on... but it's purely an emergency measure if you can't get to the dealer and it's as bad and horrendous as mine was... I'll be booking mine in next week!

So another question: I blead my brakes last year and put the new fluid in. I'll be honest I could barley tell the difference between the old and the new so I probably "wasted" some money on that. But here's the question: Since the old fluid looked so fresh do I even need to bother about taking my bike to a dealer and blead the abs-pump ?
@billcarson1966
@billcarson1966 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you do. Color isn't always indicative of the need to change. The most common problem is the moisture content level. You could have beautiful fluid color and still have 3% or higher moisture levels, which means poor brake performance/danger. Change fluid every two years and check the moisture level at least once a year. My last change I did (fluid only 11 months old) had over 3% moisture because rubber gasket was not maintaining a proper seal. I replaced the cylinder cover and gasket, problem solved.

Another essential how to video. That brake fluid was rank! If you have cleaned your brake calipers and pistons, and still your bike's brakes are dragging. Exactly that mate, this is something that I've always felt is a fatal flaw in Harley's system for servicing, or at least the marketing of their servicing - they effectively separate these periodical procedures away from the mileage focused procedures, and most people will take their bike to the dealer at 5k and 10k and pay a fixed price for a 5k or 10k service... the dealer doesn't pro-actively ask the customer if they'd like the periodicals done, they just do what they're asked to do - on the other hand, if they do ask, some cynical owners will see they are just trying to make more money by "selling more services" - it's the same with fork oil, I reckon on most bikes, not just Harleys, fork oil and brake fluid doesn't get changed much shy of 6-10yrs... my bike's a 2012 Harley and that's clearly the first time it's ever had brake fluid, and yet it has a full main dealer service history - not clever aye! It should be tucked in to the 10k service as an 'optional', depending on the calendar and when it was last done... chat soon mate, hope the show went well! D&Px

The trick i use for any philips screw that has no space above it, is to take a loose 'slip-in' screw driver bit (the hex kind that go into a bit driver).. press it down into the screw with my finger, and turn it with an 8mm spanner... works every time.!

Will the new fluid get mixed with the old fluid still in the abs part of the brake line? In that case frecuent changes would make unnecessary to go to the dealer. You could check the fluid color in some months to see if it mixed up
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
It would mix, eventually, but it's not the right thing to do... even constant partial changing will never change all of it, and it does deteriorate with age, so just get it changed when you can afford it ... it's not like it's often, being every 2yrs, if you have DOT5 fluid however, that lasts a lot longer, up to 10yrs I hear... but it doesn't mix with anything else... so you can't change over to it...

@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
If you're changing brake lines mate, you'll have to bleed them, am not sure on the Breakout system, so check with your dealer whether you need to plug the system in to prime it... on some bikes you can bleed up new hoses as long as you don't switch the ignition on and activate the ABS pump, but am not sure on your Breakout how your system is set up... they'll give you the best advice.

When I did mine,I reverse bled the new line by using a large syringe full of new brake fluid.Hooked it to the bleeder on the caliper,sucked the master cylinder dry,and pushed the new fluid through to the master cylinder.keep repeating until no bubbles come out. This keeps air from being pushed through the abs module. worked good for me.

Hi delboy quick question, so done an oil change and sorted a new sump out after garage killed other 1... oil in, start her up and there's coolant coming out of the header/midpipe connection, i had had the coolant reserve tank at a height to get it out the way, so has there just been to much coolant going in? Awesome vid. Subscribed! Quick question; if you did suck out too much fluid from the master, and there is an air bubble now. Can’t you bleed it out? Or do you need to do the “bench bleeding” of the master. That’s the only thing that confuses me about the master cylinder.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
If you go too low, and empty the reservoir, even if you pump one or two inches down the line.. its no problem... top up the reservoir and just work the lever in and out a tiny amount, (no more then an inch of movement), not enough to pump the air down the line, but enough to "wiggle" the piston in the master cylinder back and forth which will express the bubbles out into the fluid...and you'll have a solid line again..

@Moonfleet41 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there... Brake fluid is harmless to the rubber components inside your braking system, not only the hoses (even braided steel hoses are rubber on the inside), but also the critical seals inside the master cylinder and calipers.... so its a given that it probably wont do any harm to the tyre... but if there is any residue on there, then obviously it is slippery, so do what you can to get it all off now matter what... if you're in any doubt, then the only guarantee you have is to replace it buddy..!

Master cylinder to ABS modulator and from there to caliper. Otherwise it couldn't work! The black gunge is the inside of your brake lines eroding and there was no point in leaving any of it in your cylinder because you just pumped it through your ABS system.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
It doesn't go through the module if the ignition is switched off mate, all you'll end up changing is the bit between the master cylinder and the caliper, this is only a temporary fix to get rid of that awful fluid till I can get the bike to the dealership and have the whole system pumped through fully... the reason I loaded this up was we have a lot of Harley owning viewers in countries where dealerships can be hundreds of miles away, like India and South America...

Del Boy, can I ask your advise? First of all I just found your channel and i'm pleased I have, I've binge watched a ton of your videos yesterday and learnt a lot! I bought a new 2009 HD Nightster 1200N (Sporty) back in the day but due to some life circumstances I wasn't able to ride it much and its only done 600 miles from new. I love the ole girl and am at a point where I can start to ride again. I charged a yellow Moto Batt thats about a year old (old Harley one died as they do) and got it started the other day, still sounds sweet but the cranking is quite slow like the battery is struggling even though it seems fully charged? Oxford optimiser is saying its 12.5V. Any ideas? Secondly, do you think I should change the oil (or any other fluids) before I ride as its just been sat there with the odd turnover every now and then for years? Thanks for your help, keep up the great videos!

Hi Steve... Sorry not to reply sooner, i only just got home and started tackling the days emails... Ok, with your Sporty, it would be wise to give it a monstrous Birthday of Birthdays...Change every possible fluid, Engine Gearbox and Primary oils, brake fluids front and rear, and also the fork oil too.. They are all 9 years old, and have a shelf life of more like two or three... so i'd get that done before you do anything else... also the fuel in the tank.. if its been in there for more than 6 months, then syphon it all out, and fill the tank with clean fresh fuel... then thats all done. Then take a good close look at the tyres, inspect for any micro cracks in the deep grooves of the treads, and any cracking on the side walls... they'll probably be ok, but better to be sure.. Then once its all ready.. fire it up and got for a gentle ride.. build up the amount or speed and work you put the bike through, and be conscious all the way to feel and look out for anything that doesn't feel right... Thats the usual procedure for re-activating a long term laid up bike.. Let us know how it goes and have fun.. Thank you for the kind comments, its great to have you aboard my friend.. Take care. Del.

Quick question for anyone that can help. If i buy a black master cylinder to replace my chrome one. Obviously when the new one is on the handlebar it will be empty. But when i go to bleed it should i just top it off before i start bleeding? I dont get how i go about with a new one ,if they recommend not to go below those holes to not get air in the line.but the new one is bone dry... super confused
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 жыл бұрын
That's an easy upgrade Alberto... if you take off the banjo union and clip it to the bar upright, then change out the master cylinder, re-connect the banjo union to the new one, and you will have fluid, obviously, right to the top of that hose... so top off the new reservoir with fluid and just gently squeeze the lever in and out by maybe 1/2", this will wiggle the internal piston backwards and forwards and coax the fluid to drop down and any air bubbles to work their way out... as you do this you'll see the air bubbles pop up in to the fluid, it may take a few minutes, but when the bubbles have stopped, you should have a solid lever... put the cap on and then tie the lever under pressure in towards the bar overnight and you'll have a rock solid brake lever in the morning, no need to bleed the system through... just as a safety measure, check your lever is solid and the brakes are locking nicely before you venture out on the road. Good luck.

As an aside: Has anyone been following the poor Ducati multistrada rear brake failures? Seems the heat from the Cat is cooking the brake fluid and ruining the Boiling Point, thereby making the rear useless. Just a thought, as I can see that a lot of bikes have a rear brake line\ reservoir close to the cat, so it may well be that many bikes need bleeding, or rather flushing, on a regular basis.
