Glad that my Wide Glide has drain plugs at the bottom of the fork tubes. Ridiculous if they've stopped putting those in.

I always enjoy your video's and decided to change the fork oil on my 2003 FXSTB. It turns out that the caps are under no tension! The springs are both retained by a nut in the tube (41 mm factory type). So it is very easy to remove the caps (with or without lifting the front wheel) and the oil drain screws at the bottom, let it sit for a while and put the drainplugs in again. I then searched for the correct amount of oil and it was 356 ml.

Tell you what mate - I almost didn’t click on your video but after watching it I’m going to order a little vac pump and do the fork oil on my 09 FXDL. Top presentation, editing, no bullshit. Cheers mate! Mitch - Bowral, NSW, Australia.

Great job! Just giving my penny: you don't need to spend money with the suction pump. Just buy a bigger hose which one side touch the bottom of the fork and another side goes into a basin bellow the bottom level of the fork. Then, you just need to suck with a cheap manual pump and let the gravity works! For sure both methods (except the first one) work in the same way letting a little bit of old oil inside. Also, I'm not so comfortable with this measurement method once it could shows a erroneous read in case the fork was already at the incorrect level before due to leaks or anything else. So, I think it's better to follow the specs amount. Btw, thanks for the lesson.

Love your videos. I find them very educational and easy to follow. I was curious, My HD has two different screws that can be use to remove the fork oil. With one of the screw located on the bottom side of the fork it makes it very easy to drain out the fluid. The other screw, the islocated at the bottom of the fork but the axel cap must be removed in one side. I truly do not understand why HD did not use them on these models. By the way, the forks used on my bike are Japanese (Showa) and the bleeding pan screw part # 45858-77. Sadly, I had to come up with a better screw than HD offers. I used a M8 -1.25 x 10 Button Head Cap Screw in SS. Thanks again for taking the time and educating us with your skills.

Great video and brilliant idea with the pump. One question.....did you drop the wheel back on the floor before putting the top caps back on.... wouldn't that put the spring under tension and make it harder to get back on....or did I miss watch that part? Is it easy to get the non cartridge type caps back on and tight? (I know...that's more than one question!). Any advice greatly received....this video has given me the confidence to try my own now, thanks.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 ай бұрын
Cartridge forks aren't under pressure like regular forks are, the spring is held between the cap and the damper rod with a separate fastener, so you can put the wheel on the ground and still do the cap up!
@mikebrook8500

So for the non cartridge fork (the R/H grip side on the bike shown) do you put the cap back on with the wheel still in the air and do you need a special tool or not? Thanks.

After doing the work necessary to drain the oil it makes sense to flush them. Put in the new oil, pump the fork several times, and drain again. You'll get a lot more junk out that way and have a cleaner start.

Thank you for the video/videos. I have a 02 Dyna FXDWG wideglide I would rather use the pump, no brainer in difficulty part to me the pump is easier! Question please Will the suction hose get past the spring on the first one you did. Left side or do I just remove it? And it just slides out correct? Thank you I work on cars and learning bikes. Thanks again
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
If you can just lift the spring out of the way then yes, it's a good idea because you can wipe it dry and it's less internal junk for the oil to cling to, so you get more out...

Hi mate, that information will be clearly marked in a Harley service manual. I'm guessing you don't have one, as many people don't want to shell out the £80+ they cost, but they are A4 size, 2" thick, and will give you every piece of information you will ever need on your 48, a worthy investment from your Harley Davidson main agent.. you can sidestep the VAT if you order online from Jersey H-D (but then you pay postage, so just do the sums and work out the best deal!), it's your Bible and you won't regret buying it mate!

Hi buddy.. Yeah i will be upgrading the fork oil in the Dyna shortly.. it currently runs the "Fork-E" oil, which, from what i can find out, is 20 weight...and the Dyna currently dives really hard in braking..so gonna drop some Type-E in there and see if that improves it..(The previous owner was an old guy who cruised everywhere slow and comfy). and if it still dives, ill swap the fluid out for some hefty 30 weight.. you're not the first person to recommend it buddy... sounds like it may be just what i need.. Thanks too for your kind words.. and Penny says Hi.!

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 жыл бұрын
Beyond 2-3yrs mate the oil in the forks begins to degrade and thin out, you may not notice it as the change is very gradual, but you'll certainly notice the improvement if you take the trouble to change it... it's just the wear that oil goes through over years of being squeezed through tight spaces and eventually the molecular structure breaks down, and like I said, it thins out... I know it's a ball ache, and we like to convince ourselves that our bike rides fine, and of course it does, but it could simply ride better if you changed it.

30W? Really? Sorry mate, I don't think I've opend a pair of those, but your spec will be in the manual, at that age, it's likely you've got one coventional spring and one cartridge, just like my Switchback.

Hi Del, not watched the video yet but will, I have been watching all your vids recently, thanks for them. I have a wee fork oil question, in your experience what normally happens if you overfill it, I just did T595 forks and didn't dismantle the damping gubbins inside, I blasted it will tons of brake cleaner till it ran clean, well for a while I've had oil coming past the seals both sides, the RH fork stopped leaking a few weeks ago and the LH is showing next to nothing now, does this sound feasible or am I bonkers! Thanks.

Hi James, Good to hear from you mate, if you overfill by too much then under full compression such as a big pot hole, or dropping it down from a wheelie etc.. they oil can hit the top of the cap and lock the fork.. but it usually doesn't lock, it just bursts the seals out, but if its only a small amount then the lack of air space in there means you get higher pressure under load and it can push the oil past the seals... either way the only correct solution is to empty it all out and fill with the correct amount mate.. but im sure you realise that..! Hope that helps you out.. let me know how you get on buddy. .. Del.

Hey Del, Cool DIY tutorial. What's your take on the Monotube front suspension? And, what handlebar are you using on the Dyna?
@Moonfleet41

Hi buddy, knew somone would ask that about the bars - because I wanted a longer reach, and more of a old school look, like the bikes from the '50's, I fitted those, and they are factory handlebars from a Harley Davidson XR1200... just a basic cowhorn bar in black...and they give me a much better ride position!

If it's an upside down fork with a cartridge, then you will only access part of the oil mate, you have to work the cartridge in and out to pump out the oil, so it's best to turn it upside down.

Hi Andrea, good to hear from you, that sounds strange... hopefully an oil change will bring them back to life, do check the quantity that comes out though, as on a Dyna like this, it should be 1/2pint in each, you may have had a leak and be low on fluid?? Check the manual for your bike and make sure that you put the correct amount in... good luck with it, and drop us a line to let us know how you get on ! All the best, D&Px

Double thanks for that video Del. I just changed my fork oil having been inspired by watching this morning. The old oil was black and thick and smelly. Its a 30 year old Transalp, so goodness knows when it was changed last. With new oil in the bike feels much better...less fork dive. I don't get that, since even old oil can't be compressible, unless there wasn't enough in. Anyhoo, thanks again, and keep up the great vids. All the best to you and Penny. Ps...I made a bit of mess...you make it look so easy 😆
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin, They probably feel better because the new oil has some body to it.. after years of being mushed through the damper rod hols the oil looses it viscosity and becomes like water.. its job is to pass through the holes and for the force needed to slow down the bounce...but once the oil become watery it gushes through the holes with less force, hence it feels more spongy.. always good to do it every two years along with your brake fluid if you can buddy..!! glad the video helped you.. keep in touch aye.. Del.

Yeah , love the cherryaid very satisfying .. That vacuum tank we both use is so handy..i used my 6l one to drain my fuel before i did phosphoric acid in my tank ..it was a risk at ruining the seals but it stood up fine ...in fact i use it for all fluids...bloody great kit...👍☮❤😁

My '06 softail has drain screws and the shop manual says that is how to change fork oil...Thoughts??? Thank you!!!!!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Wolco, you are a lucky man if you have drain screws, yes you must use those, they are an aboslute god send becasue they drain absolutely from the very bottom, so all of the filings and sludge comes out which is a little better than sucking it out with a tube and certainly better than having to strip the front end... if you really wanna do a super thorough change get yourself a litre of cheap 5w fork oil, drain out the stuff that's in there with the screws, pop the screws back in, pour a pint of oil in to each fork from the cheap 5w oil, put the caps back on, and pump the bike up and down for a good 5mins to thoroughly mix up the contents, then use the screws again and drain out the oil... This will act like a flushing oil to wash any debris in there that will cling to the sides, then you can pop the screws back in and re-fill with your chosen oil with the correct quantity... hope that helps you, take care, ride safe, D&Px
