I always enjoy your video's and decided to change the fork oil on my 2003 FXSTB. It turns out that the caps are under no tension! The springs are both retained by a nut in the tube (41 mm factory type). So it is very easy to remove the caps (with or without lifting the front wheel) and the oil drain screws at the bottom, let it sit for a while and put the drainplugs in again. I then searched for the correct amount of oil and it was 356 ml.

now then delboy, before i go on love all your videos and respect the way you spanner, just returned back to biking and treated meself to a 2008 dyna superglide shes mint with only 7000 dry british miles, always loved doing my own repair and upkeep but only small job was to stiffen forks and after watching this vid i got meself a vacume pump and went to graft, after both fork legs only gave me 480ml /cc each ( the book said about 780 cc) i decided to remove legs and turn upside down and hey presto the remaining oil was there, after inspection :MY fault: i found the suction tube didnt pass the OROFICE down into lower fork leg, so in summary brill vid but to anyone doing the oil change make sure you pick the bones out of all vids you watch and always always have a good service manual present. please keep up the good work and keep smiling ben p.s used smith and allen 15wt ,much better now not so much bounce and less dive.

Thanks for the feedback Mr B, and congratulations on the new Harley, welcome back to the fold. ! it's easy to get the hose tube stuck before it gets all the way down, easy fix is to hold it up against the side of the fork leg on the outside, and measure the point it reaches the bottom.. then the marker reaches the top of the leg when the hose reaches the bottom.. or just up-end it like you did, both ways work.. ride safe and enjoy your new bike. @Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, yes indeed, it's a great little device, it'll save you a lot of grief... you can use it for sucking fluid out of anything, even non-automotive, and they're cheap as chips - link underneath !
@aperali5 жыл бұрын
Great job! Just giving my penny: you don't need to spend money with the suction pump. Just buy a bigger hose which one side touch the bottom of the fork and another side goes into a basin bellow the bottom level of the fork. Then, you just need to suck with a cheap manual pump and let the gravity works! For sure both methods (except the first one) work in the same way letting a little bit of old oil inside. Also, I'm not so comfortable with this measurement method once it could shows a erroneous read in case the fork was already at the incorrect level before due to leaks or anything else. So, I think it's better to follow the specs amount. Btw, thanks for the lesson.

Love your videos. I find them very educational and easy to follow. I was curious, My HD has two different screws that can be use to remove the fork oil. With one of the screw located on the bottom side of the fork it makes it very easy to drain out the fluid. The other screw, the islocated at the bottom of the fork but the axel cap must be removed in one side. I truly do not understand why HD did not use them on these models. By the way, the forks used on my bike are Japanese (Showa) and the bleeding pan screw part # 45858-77. Sadly, I had to come up with a better screw than HD offers. I used a M8 -1.25 x 10 Button Head Cap Screw in SS. Thanks again for taking the time and educating us with your skills.

Double thanks for that video Del. I just changed my fork oil having been inspired by watching this morning. The old oil was black and thick and smelly. Its a 30 year old Transalp, so goodness knows when it was changed last. With new oil in the bike feels much better...less fork dive. I don't get that, since even old oil can't be compressible, unless there wasn't enough in. Anyhoo, thanks again, and keep up the great vids. All the best to you and Penny. Ps...I made a bit of mess...you make it look so easy 😆
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Hi Robin, They probably feel better because the new oil has some body to it.. after years of being mushed through the damper rod hols the oil looses it viscosity and becomes like water.. its job is to pass through the holes and for the force needed to slow down the bounce...but once the oil become watery it gushes through the holes with less force, hence it feels more spongy.. always good to do it every two years along with your brake fluid if you can buddy..!! glad the video helped you.. keep in touch aye.. Del.

ive seen so much variation in oil levels from the factory, some over full some under full. I always pull the forks off a do a complete disassembly as there is always gunk in the bottom. Hope your well guys.!
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, that is indeed the correct and proper way to do it, but removing and stripping forks is beyond many people and daunting for most, specially cartridge forks that need special tools.. and you are right, some oil levels have been known to vary... but you can still check the quantity with your manual, and measure what you get out to see if you have got it all..if you'r worried about any sediment, then turn them upside down and let them drain, maybe even flush some oil in and out a few times. and then adjust the level if needed.. thanks for watching mate.. have a good day. You mentioned milage of 50,000. You stated how our harley's are low milage. This I agree with as in 2010 when I bought the Road King I checked out some of the Harleys for sale in some of the big main dealers in the US where they consider a 2 or 3 year old bike with between 20,000 and 25,000 as low milage, therefore their recommendation for a change of oil at 50,000 or 5 years.
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
I think it's a different dynamic there, being a bigger country with bigger distances and with everything spread out, but even still I think 2yrs is more than enough for the molecular structure to get broken down being forced through the damper rods thousands of times every ride... try it for yourself mate, it always makes a difference to the handling when you freshen up the fork oil , so that has to be worth it !
@nightster63786 жыл бұрын
I don't make myself clear but I meant to agree with you, I generally change fluids evert 2 years should the milage be high or low it costs little money and an afternoon. NOT INCLUDING ENGINE OIL AS THIS DEPENDS ON MILAGE. In caps to highlight to others because engine oil as you know is important. What I was highlighting is what these guys do in milage and probably why HD state this. 25000 miles Its a lot of corners and bumps or should I say smooth straights in heir case.
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
I got your vibe there brother, and your agreement, I think you're right... it's a big country and it makes total sense that if they reckon on 25k in a year, then 50 is 2yrs and that's bang on the periodical time it should be changed, I think your policy is perfect, change them fluids as often as you can, you can hardly change oil too often can you lol... (obviously running in period not withstanding because it's important to let the engine run in before you change the oil).. if race bikes get fresh oil and an engine re-build every race, than that's certainly a benchmark to lead by .. I think the old saying goes here, too much is never enough ! Take care my friend and enjoy your weekend...

How do you make sure that the fork legs are the right height in the triple clamp with that cowling on there? Does just taking one side off at a time ensure it, because it will have to be at the same height when you put the axle back through? Are there any worries that maybe the “starting” height was wrong, or else one was higher than the other? (I ask because I’m getting ready to do my Switchback-I’m not sure if it’s ever been done before I owned it-and I notice one fork cap is fractionally higher with reference to the “cowling” than the other side.) Thank you! Your vids are incredibly helpful!
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
No need to overthink it Brian, just eyeball it the same both sides, and i set them so the screw cap is fractionally clear of the yoke..the actual height is not critical itself, just that they are the same.. Hope that helps mate.

Great video and brilliant idea with the pump. One question.....did you drop the wheel back on the floor before putting the top caps back on.... wouldn't that put the spring under tension and make it harder to get back on....or did I miss watch that part? Is it easy to get the non cartridge type caps back on and tight? (I know...that's more than one question!). Any advice greatly received....this video has given me the confidence to try my own now, thanks.
@Moonfleet419 ай бұрын
Cartridge forks aren't under pressure like regular forks are, the spring is held between the cap and the damper rod with a separate fastener, so you can put the wheel on the ground and still do the cap up!
@mikebrook85009 ай бұрын
So for the non cartridge fork (the R/H grip side on the bike shown) do you put the cap back on with the wheel still in the air and do you need a special tool or not? Thanks.

If you can just lift the spring out of the way then yes, it's a good idea because you can wipe it dry and it's less internal junk for the oil to cling to, so you get more out...

@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
They certainly do my friend, I wanted to keep the video focused so, perhaps, over edited that just a little... they are, indeed, conventional pinch bolts in convential yokes, that chrome cover is just a shroud that covers them up, and there are holes in the back of it to access the head of the pinch bolts... then you can just free up all the furniture below the fork, caliper, mudguard and axle etc., then undo the pinch bolts and slip the leg out... thanks for your kind words, the Switchback is a fabulous bike, the last of the Dynas!

Hey Del & Penny, I have a HD 2006 softail deuce, to drain the fork oil I have to remove the front tire as the drain screws are on the inside of the fork tubes and you can't get to them with the wheel on. The fork caps are like 1 3/4 inch and can add new oil there. Just thought would share with you. As the deuce is a strange machine and at times very easy to work on and other times not so much. Also when would you recommend doing a rebuild on the shocks???
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Hi buddy, thanks for your input, yes the Deuce is a strange bike, with a few odd things that other Harleys don't have... thanks for the insight on the bleed screws, they are a weird one for sure...! With the shocks, what exactly do you mean by re-building them?? I would only do that if they're leaking, or seized, do you have any problems with them?? You can up-grade them to the YSS ones, which will improve the handling a lot... once again, thank you for your insight, much appreciated...!
@Elkins246 жыл бұрын
Hey Buddy, Sorry I meant a re-build on the forks. But, for now am going to use Screaming Eagle fork oil. As when riding the front feels mushy. Also am looking at changing the back shocks to YSS shocks. But, that is down the road some. First want to get all the fluids changed.

Beyond 2-3yrs mate the oil in the forks begins to degrade and thin out, you may not notice it as the change is very gradual, but you'll certainly notice the improvement if you take the trouble to change it... it's just the wear that oil goes through over years of being squeezed through tight spaces and eventually the molecular structure breaks down, and like I said, it thins out... I know it's a ball ache, and we like to convince ourselves that our bike rides fine, and of course it does, but it could simply ride better if you changed it.

Great video! Do you know which type of springs i would have in my stock 2014 Harley SGS? I’d rather not remove the forks at all if I can just use your sucking method on both sides. -Thanks

Sorry mate, I don't think I've opend a pair of those, but your spec will be in the manual, at that age, it's likely you've got one coventional spring and one cartridge, just like my Switchback.

Hi there, got a 2013 Dynamo Switchback and wanting to do the forkful change, unfortunately you only covers the left side. Whats the different to the right side? the sucktion of the oil looks like an easy job to do. just a bit scared of the right side? Can you be of any assistance ? Cheers and a happy new year

I changed the oil in both forks mate, left and right, the tube fits down the side of the cartridge to suck the oil out, and just pours back in the top when you're done! Just follow the video, it walks you thorough it...

I have a 2014 Switchback. What size or type of socket do I need to remove the fork tube cap nuts on top of the forks?

The fork oil on my FLD was replaced at the 10K mile service when the bike was about 4 years old...

cool. Can you use the same trick to suck brake fluid through the caliper bleed nipple?
@Moonfleet416 жыл бұрын
Possibly, i guess you'd need a tight seal on the tube.. not tried it myself.

Awesome video. Does the 2019 Street Glide have two conventional forks or is one a cartridge?

I have to answer with 'I don't know' I'm afraid, as I never opened mine up, but it will be in the spec sheet for your bike so check with your dealer and they'll be able to confirm... it probably is the same as this one, but check to be sure!
