No it should be them being the best ship for 3 seasons(S1-3). When they got together they were underwhelming. The actors had so much chemistry and the relationship had so much potential but their writing sucked. This along with others was the reason the tvd tv ratings dropped so much.

This is probably the first love story where I cried for the hero instead of the heroine the entire time. 🙈 Every time Elena broke his heart, I cried. Regardless of favorite ships, I think it would be lying to say Damon and Elena did not have the most chemistry on the show. They were not my favorite couple but their chemistry was another level. Caroline/Klaus, and also Bonnie/Kai came close too though, I can’t lie there.

This is what truly sets TVD apart. I love how they let Damon just actually change and be sweet, allow drama to be caused by outside factors. In any other show, Elena & Damon would just be fighting and leaving every single episode. Forever. Every time something nice happened, Damon would suddenly be a giant asshole just to continue the "drama" and we'd never get to enjoy anything. So few shows allow their characters to actually change and have stable relationships with new stakes. I know a lot of people hate how Damon went from being cool in Season 1 to being obsessed with Elena & super nice, but I love it lol.
