Honestly, let me speak about Damon a second, Damon is one of the best characters in this series, he’s so selfish yet so selfless it’s interesting to see on screen. Even though Damon was considered ‘bad’ at the start of the series (s1, s2), he’s now gotten.. I guess, ‘better’ as a character. I used to be team #stelena, but now I’m team #delena all the way! Having watched this show just recently, let me be blunt by saying Stefan didn't stand a chance with Elena once Damon stepped into the picture. “The Stefan you know was Good Behavior Stefan, Under Control Stefan, Fight His Nature Into An Annoying Excessive Level Stefan. But if you think there isn't another part to this, then you have not been paying attention.” Their conversation in 1x18 sealed her with Damon. 1x19 followed with the beginning of their love story. Stefan and Damon were created to play complete opposites. It was this conversation specifically that sealed them because it speaks just as much to Damon in playing Stefan's opposite. These opposites are the reason Damon and Elena were meant to end up together. What one fights, they fall prey to, and Damon plays complete opposite the Ripper. That's why Elena found a love that consumes her... why Damon didn't feed on Elena, it was she who fed on him. These opposites play through the entire series, giving reason for everything... like Elena defending Damon. Her character's intent for Stefan was to act as a bridge so he could find his way back to his brother. It was never meant to end as anything more than that.
