Got the car now for 1.5 years and done 75000 kilometers with it and was inspired buying one by your video's! Got a mild tune and cat and dpf still in. 830nm and 350 HP. Plenty for me for now. Great video on the coolest W211 ever! How many kilometers have this car done? I am asking because I did EGR delete on my OM629 at 90k km, wondering if mine would look as disgusting 😅 Also interested why you decided not to do EGR delete at the same time when you deleted DPF and you did ECU tune. Increasing fueling + having EGR active = not good 🤔 There aren't much videos here related to OM629, like others have already requested, you need to more of these!😄

I realized I had missed your comment. Sorry about the late reply. Thanks alot! This car has covered roughly 210 000km. Although there are some things that can affect the rate of build-up, I'm sure yours won't be quite this bad! 🙂 About not doing the EGR delete earlier.. I sure should have. At the time, I didn't have in mind how badly it would affect the intake in the long run. About the extra fueling; the ECU was also programmed to handle the extra fuel with a reasonable amount of extra air. Hard to say if this has had an impact, but the intake becoming like this is inevitable with EGR. I will definitely make more videos in the future. Again, thanks!

Wow lovely work 👏 And the sound is just awesome 😍 I have a tuned 535d and I recently got a GL420 love it so far, great machine. I have one issue though and I was hoping for an advice because these engines are not very common, atleast in my country. (DPF deleted) The car starts smoking white/gray when it is being idling for a while (20 mins), stops when I take off... and if I drive it on the highway for a 100km the COOLANT starts going out of the cap 🤯 Then error for adding coolant pops on the dash... but if I drive it around the city - no issues.. Can you advice what could it be? I am really hoping it's something small like the EGR cooler, not headgaskets or worst?
@bkorven2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! All right, nice! To decide whether it's failing head gasket or EGR cooler can be a bit tricky I guess, since some of the symptoms would be similar. Unfortunately, failing head gaskets is something I've heard alot of with these engines. I can't remember having heard of the EGR cooler leaking internally. Although, leaking EGR could explain the exhaust smoke at idle but not while driving (valve opening being proportional to load, fully open at idle and thus a higher amount of coolant in the exhaust). However a leaking head gasket could probably do the same. If I have to guess - head gasket, I'm afraid. However, if it's the head gasket there is a high possibility of the engine oil and coolant mixing, so check the oil for sludge (under oil filler cap, for example).
@streetracer9412 Жыл бұрын
@bkorven Thanks for the advice, it was the head gasket cracked, the right one. There were signs of an old repair and they have changed only the right one with some crappie brand. I have changed both and serviced the engine. I am so happy with it. The dpfs are deleted and it has a remap. Very quick for a 2.5ton truck 😅 I have one issue though it smokes a bit when its pressed hard and even more if it was staying at idle for some time. I am guessing the Egr valves are getting stuck..

Hello, you are doing a good job. Can you tell me whether the OM629 biturbo diesel is reliable? Should I continue with the OM642 diesel or should I continue with an engine prone to problems with regular maintenance, quality workmanship and original parts? Which one do you recommend? Fuel consumption is not important.
@bkorven14 күн бұрын
Thanks! In my experience, it is reliable. My W211 (this ML belongs to a friend of mine) has 230k km on the odometer, and I've basically just done regular maintenance. It's been with my family since new, so I have all the history on it. The EGR-system clogged up the intake quite badly with time, so that has been cleaned thoroughly once as preventative measure. The glow-plug module has failed (common problem with OM629.) And the engine mounts needs replacing more often than on the average car. Other than that, the engine has been very reliable. Some parts are quite expensive and hard to find, due to the rarity of the engine. But the common maintenance parts are readily available. It's hard to recommend one over the other without knowing your preferences. OM629 is something very different from OM642. If you want something special, more powerful, and do not care about some parts being hard to find, I'd recommend OM629. If you want an engine easier to work on, and easier to find parts for, and a very reliable engine, I'd recommend OM648 over both OM629 and OM642. But I don't think you should care too much about reliability, since as far as I know they can all be reliable. OM629 is just a pain to work on, sometimes. But it's such a lovely V8 when it's running, and I would never trade it for any of the other options.

@@valilucy9281 Sorry about my late response. Is it the CDI? If so, I'd first of all suggest to go with straight pipes, eliminating/deleting whatever exhaust components (one at the time, if you'd like to test the sound in steps) there are that reduces sound level and flow. In other words, save money and don't bother with any after-market mufflers. If it's the petrol you should be more careful with the exhaust to make it sound nice. However, the EGR can be setup to be shut via software too! Thank you very much for your comment!

Did you receive any error codes with that hardware-EGR-delete? The main (and electronicly overwatched via OBD) part is still in place and I wonder if the car notices the missing EGR flow in the intake somehow. Also how did you block the other side (the round pipe)? Thank you very much in advance from a very interested GL420CDI owner 😁
@bkorven Жыл бұрын
Yes, I received the fault code P0401, related to insufficient EGR flow. So the car notices! The other side, as in the single pipe with the expanded end? That goes into the intake pipe before the manifold? That is the cooler for the exhaust gases from the EGR. Does not need to be blocked, since no exhaust gases enters from the other side. Or were you referring to something else? Nice to see a fellow 420 CDI-owner commenting!

Your 420 sound is awesome! I have a 320cdi....with back muffler delete. It has no DPF as its an 04. Still has no sound. I am about to do an EGR delete.....do you think it will help to sound like yours??..........🤔
@bkorven Жыл бұрын
Thank you! If you wish to achieve an interesting exhaust note, I'd advice on deleting the cat as well. Also, make sure not to just hollow out any exhaust component, as it will have a bad impact on flow and sound compared to actual straight piping. The impact on exhaust note by EGR delete is in my experience small (or negligible, even). Also, keep in mind that my car has a V8 while yours has an I6. An '04 320 CDI can sound fantastic nonetheless, but just different from what a 420 CDI sounds like. If you run straight pipe exhaust all the way from the turbo, I'm pretty sure you'd be happy with the exhaust sound!

@bkorven Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I replaced these gaskets: - A 629 098 09 80 - A 027 997 34 48 (x2) - A 029 997 54 48 (x2) - A 016 997 52 45 - A 027 997 16 48 - A 642 188 05 80 - A 629 142 08 80 I can imagine that yours were even dirtier, at that milage. No one is spared from this, unfortunately. You actually do not need the block-off plates at all, I think. You don't need to bother with trying to somehow physically jam the valves, either. The valve position can via software be adjusted manually to be fixed shut, and then with EGR-off there will be no codes.

Why doesn't black smoke come out if you delete EGR, also isn't it good for fuel consumption
@bkorven2 ай бұрын
The EGR-system for diesel engines is intended to lower NOx-emissions, and not particulate matters (black smoke). I don't think there's any difference now from before. I don't think the EGR-system has any significant impact on fuel consumption. I can find arguments both for and against, which might require a little closer analysis.

@@Shockload The main reason for me to delete it was as a preventative measure, to avoid build up of the thick sludge deposits inside the intake. I suppose another benefit could be slightly increased power. There are pros and cons, however.

I use oil with viscosity index 5w-30. Any of 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40, 5w-40 could work fine, and you probably do not need to worry too much about it. There are some benefits and drawbacks with each viscosity index. If you've got both DPF delete and EGR delete I'd recommed using quality ACEA A3/B4 (ACEA C3 for a stock one). Any brand is OK, and you may as well buy the cheapest you can find. Rather be careful not neglecting oil change intervals.

Hey such a lovely car! Are you gonna give it a stage 3 upgrade and how is it doing with stage 2 now? And did u have races against 535/335 with ecu tunes?
@bkorven2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you! I might give it a stage 3 upgrade someday, but it's not something I have more closely planned. It's been doing super well with stage 2 for the past 10 years, but since EGR-delete I've begun to experience problems with turbo boost turning off completely. I believe some of the soot and muck from the intake valves found its way to the turbos, and are making the variable vanes in the turbo stick. This could result in too slow responses in turbo pressure, and then safe mode with no boost at all. So that's something I'm looking into right now, we'll see what it turns out to be. Back in the days I raced an E60 535D with exhaust and tune. It was quicker than my e420 cdi at the time (which only had a piggyback chiptune).

@bkorven2 жыл бұрын
Nice. From my experience, these engines are very reliable. This car has never had any major issues over the past 14 years. Known issues with this engine that I know of are: - Engine mounts wearing out quicker than normal (not really an issue) - Glow plug control module failing (have had the problem myself) - EGR-system polluting the intake (not unique to this engine though) - Oil cooler leaking (have not had this problem myself) And about the transmission; yes, it seems to be able to withstand the torque. It's been driven with this stage of tuning for about 10 years now, and the transmission is holding up flawlessly. It seems to be quite overdimensioned from factory, and I don't know why.

Hi! The software, with EGR off, is custom made by a local tuner.

Use E85 in diesel. It will clean the engine, it does NOT harm the engine in any way. I tryed this my self. Say you have 20 gallon diesel and a quarter of E85. Its verry littel you use....but this whole never be a problem. Once a month is Moore than enough.

@bkorven10 ай бұрын
Hello, I have not encountered this problem myself, and haven't heard about it being a common problem I'm afraid. However I don't suspect troubleshooting it should be any different from in general, for any other car. The first thing that comes to mind is the thermostat, but perhaps you have some history on the car that might indicate the root cause. Perhaps you can read some error code, which could help. I have a facebook-group for owners of these engines, where you can try asking the question to all members if you'd like. You are welcome to join!

Hi do you know if the OM628/9 engines suffer from the same oil cooler (metal thing under egr cooler) leak as the 642 ? I really love the sound of the om628/9 but i hate the reliability issues of the om642! I know that the om628 came out before the 642 and that they have a different V angle but they identical under the intake manifold...

I've never heard any owner of OM629 mentioning leaking oil cooler (I'm in contact with several). I've not had the problem myself either, altough I replaced the gaskets now while I was at it. Also, the OM629 and OM642 do not have the same oil cooler. They just use the same gaskets. So no, I don't think OM629 suffers from that same problem. OM629 has some well-known issues, but my impression over the years, from several owners, is that they are very reliable overall.

OM629 owner here: mine had the leaking oil cooler problem but the previous owner fixed it already. Online in the forums, you can find some more owners with that problem too but not as near as often as on OM642 engines - could be due to lower quantities of OM629 of course.

@bkorven10 күн бұрын
@@stnjkbs6062 As in exhaust back pressure? What problem would there be about it, do you mean?
@stnjkbs606210 күн бұрын
Exhaust back pressure sensors yes. Got ecu tuned egr and dpf off but getting faults as EBP values plausible when accelerating. Did egr delete the same way as in video and i think ecu doesn’t see changes under acceleration on ebp values so it goes limp
@bkorven10 күн бұрын
@@stnjkbs6062 I realized you're probably talking about the pressure sensors upstreams the EGR-valves. The tuner I went to did not solve it. Although, my friends ML420 CDI is running successfully with these blocking plates. So either there's a difference in the EGR-system between the ML and the E, or the tuner of the ML managed to do something my tuner did not. I'll investigate it when I have the time, but my last option will be to restore the exhaust pipes to the valves and then close the valves via software.
@stnjkbs606210 күн бұрын
@ yep, i was thinking the same, my tuner tried multiple times, even disabling sensors but problem occurred the same without fault codes. Probably restoring exhaust flow to egr in a few days or relocating sensor
@bkorven10 күн бұрын
@@stnjkbs6062 That is correct. The problem seems to be connected to the pressure sensors, but to me it does not make sense. What function does these sensors have, except the monitoring of the valves themselves? Why couldn't the pressure signal be ignored?

Hey! I'd say that you should be prepared for not being able to find any ready-made exhaust system for your car, since it's so rare. But having a custom-made exhaust system (preferably straight pipes 😉) made for you should not be any problems. There are definitely several forums for diesel guys in general, that I bet are great! Otherwise, I've started a facebook-group for owners of cars with OM628 & OM629. Among other things, we help eachother out with project plans and the like. You are welcome to join, if you'd like!
