they are responsible, but the way google gets around it legally is that Google is not the one advertising, its the advertiser paying to use Googles services, the one behind the advertisement is very much legally responsible for what they advertise as much as this sucks, it very much is in line with the idea of the free internet, the idea that a service is provided for anyone to use without bias, that is very much the core idea of the internet, the internet isn't "not what it was 20 years ago" 20 years ago the seeds that were laid down for a free internet lead us here directly, free means free for all (not in price) and that includes corporations, the only way we could have stopped this was never inventing the idea of the free internet in the first place

Wave Browser is one of the worst forms of malware I've had to deal with where I work. Not only does it make itself the default for any type of url or file it can run, but it also changes the targets on the shortcuts of every other browser you have installed. Uninstalling it doesn't revert them either. It also launches itself when you close it, essentially forcing itself to be running, all the time. It's doing something nefarious. If I see it, I'm reimaging that computer.

Wave Browser contains malware. Two that I see commonly are fake McAfee pops up that say: your Antivirus has expired, offering a fake number to call. Another is the screaming Microsoft warning with sirens and a person yelling that your system has been corrupted, call Microsoft (also at a fake number). They're full screen vignettes giving the user the impression that the window is locked (like ransomware). I see it regularly. A simple browser reset will get rid of it but it's a pain in the ass anyway.

Google 100% knowingly allows these ads. If they actually cared, they would allow creators to block accounts of the ad creators and not just whack-a-mole individual ads. Also, they would allow creators to specify strings (or better -- regex) matching content (including OCR of ad images). Such blocking would be *trivial* for Google to implement and they know it. It seems to me that this is an opportunity for someone to make an ad network with such better controls.
