One of the best anime of the year. At first you think it's just a simple fantasy comedy, but the worldbuilding of this show is incredibly rich and well done. There's great attention to detail and coherence. It's going to take time to set it up, as well as the psychology of the characters, at the same time as the plot reveals its depth. Trigger did a really great job on the anime. Dungeon Meshi will reveal itself step by step; and the answers will come :).

Laios will get expanded upon later, but the reason he was so out of it in the first scene was simply because he was hungry. I can't remember exactly what was said, but he said something about how the party wasn't fighting the dragon as well as they should've been because they lost so much food getting there. So, it more than likely wasn't just him, but we only get his inner monolog.
