Personally I love Laois's character. I found him amusing, because I never really thought of him as "the main protagonist." If anything, Marceille is really the main protagonist, and she's great. But also, Laois was fun because it keeps you off balance. There were a number of times where I wondered if his personality was just bad writing until I realized how deliberate it was, and it became funny. The moment when I saw Fahlin's transformed state was the final straw where I realized, "oh okay... yeah that confirms it! He's ACTUALLY batshit crazy, and it's a completely intentional writing decision." I fell in love with his character at that moment. I guess because to me he doesn't come off as a "dick" so much as just mentally handicapped. I noticed you seem to be watching it dubbed, and I wondered if that might have some influence on the difference in our perceptions.
@kaydenl68367 ай бұрын
He’s just a dipshit with no social cues, simple as that LMAO
@pantherbeastly39347 ай бұрын
You make a compelling point about Laios's unlikeability being comedically intentional, but even so, a mentally handicapped person wouldn't react to seeing their sister malformed into a monster with "that's the coolest thing I've ever seen." The reason Laios's behavior is perceived as bad and inexcusable is because his behavior isn't presented in a way that implies that he's simply incapable of understanding social cues. It is made clear in the narrative that he has a regressive view of people and is aware of that, but chooses not to change his behavior. In a good story, a mentally handicapped person's behavior would be shown a bit more sympathetically and respectfully, where the other characters he travels with would be shown to gradually get to know the character better to understand that their brain is merely wired differently from the average person. The neurodivergent protagonist would also learn to better navigate social situations in a way that allows other people to be more open and patient with him, without silencing the things that make him who he is. This doesn't really occur at all in Dungeon meshi; Laios and the other protags are always at odds because of Laios's behavior, and Laios himself is called out for his obsessions and regressive views of others. A point is made that he has a self destructive view of the world that came about due to the abuse he suffered from his hometown, not that he's handicapped/autistic, and he never puts in the effort to correct his insensitivity. From my own experiences with media, arguing that his behavior is the result of a mental handicap ignores the nuanced issues with his character writing and unintentionally enforces the stigmatization of handicapped people. However, I'm not trying to accuse you of being ableist, as you were just offering your reasoning! I completely see where you are coming from, and hope you can take what I say as merely opinion and with a grain of salt! ♥
@swirlighost6 ай бұрын
I've just discovered your channel and I need to say that you have every right to have an opinion. If you didn't enjoy the show, that's great! I respect that immensely. There are famous things I really dislike, myself, and that's just being a person. With that being said, I'm looking at how you respond to people. Yes, sometimes people are assholes to you and that can warrant an aggressive response, but some of these are genuine critiques made in good faith. If you feel they've misunderstood something, you shouldn't carry yourself like an insensitive prick just to "Gotcha" them, cursing and spitting. It hurts your image, and makes parts of your audience really not want to engage with you.
@pantherbeastly39346 ай бұрын
I can sort of understand where you're coming from here, but you're missing the initial attitudes that she's responding to. In a lot of the comments, people are going in with a needlessly combative tone; calling her opinions backwater takes, being overtly sarcastic, getting across a tone of entitlement to a certain degree, trying to make her see their positive view of the show while disregarding the reasons she had for disliking it, etc. While there is definitely one instance where she handled criticism a bit more aggressively than needed, the majority of the time she is reacting to people who were lashing out against her opinion in the video. Good faith or not, there's a way to convey your message without belittling someone else's opinion. I'd also implore you to think about the situation more from Lily's perspective, as these sorts of people have been bullying and abusing her through the internet for years, so while she definitely could handle some of her responses more tactfully, it isn't coming from a place of malice or entitlement. Just a need to protect herself and quell harassment. She may have been nicer to these sorts of comments in the past, only to find that they do little to settle tense situations and only make things worse for her in the end. Unfortunately, in a lot of ways, harsh directness is an effective way to get a point across while deescalating a potential argument on the internet. I can agree that there's a better way to go about her responses, but calling her an insensitive prick and approaching your critique so aggressively isn't going to make her see your side. I'm saying this not to direct hate your way at all, and I understand your side of things wholeheartedly! Just want to offer a different side to the conundrum.
@xensilverquill20646 ай бұрын
Very often when Lily gets on to people, it's because they have immediately interpreted something she said in a negative/aggressive light or approached her in bad faith. She is a media critic with strong opinions; she is here to critique and analyze media, not make herself amenable and agreeable to everyone in a fandom. If it's a genuine discussion you want, she's incredibly insightful and to-the-point and funny. If you want someone to gush about your favorite blorbo, there are plenty of other creators out there doing just that.

Laios is perhaps the most *me* a character has ever been in a show in the way he reacts to monsters and interest/knowledge about dungeon ecology- so for me, as an ecologist who specializes in germs and bugs, I really related to his excitement about things that most people find abhorrent. And Also, as a big sister, I completely agree his relationship to Falin is really disappointingly shallow (I wont reiterate what you said about his reaction to her monster body, you covered it), the way he talks about growing up and leaving her in a neglectful environment, and then fucking off to the army so she's alone at school with no friends. That did bother me. I agree with your rating, I generally like Laios but the the sibling relationship is written piss poor, so yeah B+, pacing and tonal issues keep it from being an A for me. Oh and an edit here: my boyfriend related to Marcille more than any other character ever (except for Sheldon). So that made for a fun rivalry while watching together: he'd agree that marcille is totally right and I would too- but also I'm the type to eat bugs and things that I dropped onto the floor so that made the beginning scenes more fun and made the problems i have with the sibling dynamic to be worth it

The main narrative of the story is arguably the strongest element here, it's a shame that it only becomes apparent around the final act (which won't come until next season). The story's got one of the most compelling main antagonists I've ever seen in a fantasy work. Ryoko Kui really has a knack for coming up with fascinating fantasy concepts and putting them in mundane contexts. She wrote some sick magical realism short stories before dungeon meshi.

My opinion only really got changed when he got his leg bitten off to save falin, which showed he actually gave a shit. If i was writing the show, i would've put in an extra scene where he has a nightmare about what happened to falin to show he actually gives a damn about her.
@TitanusAmaranteАй бұрын
The problem with Laios is that a lot of his more subtle and likable traits are left out of the anime. I read the manga first and Laios' expressions are a bit more...unhinged in the adaptation. And a lot of the subtle character moments people point out to defend him are from side materials and bonus chapters. He does come off as kind of an unhinged asshole at points if you don't see those. And the way the fandom reacts to anyone who remotely criticizes him is frankly annoying and can color things. Look at the Shuro situation. I mean, Laios and to a much lesser extent Falin were straight up racist to the guy. And it reached a boiling point because Laios kept pushing the guy's boundaries and there were major cultural differences in communication. But the fandom...was straight up racist when it came to Toshiro and blamed him for the entire fight. And don't get me started when it comes to Kabru and Laios and that ship. The way to fandom treats Kabru is frankly, weird as hell. Like it's at poor Nemona from pokemon levels of mischaracterization for shipping him with Laios.

His weakness as he can't think on the fly making him unable to react to situations unfolding in a way he didn't expect. I really like Delicious in dungeon, but I also like Laois, so that's definetly why. I never considered that people might not like him, but I can definetly see how it would ruin the show for you if you don't. I never really saw him as a character that was meant to be taken entirely serious. Like his schtick is that he's weird and I just accepted that. To me, this is mainly a comedy show, because I find the premise very ridiculous. The comedy really lands with me so I am probably more likely to overlook some of the faults of the show. It's like "oh comedy show, oh a little character moment and a more overaching plot neat, oh yay, back to comedy" Kind of in a similar vein to Spy X Family (though that one obviously does it a lot better). I could have done without the grand stakes of saving the entire dungeon, because I always prefer low stakes character focused stories, but I think Delicous dungeon is neat 🤷♂

God, I'm glad you covered the autistic hc that the entire fandom decided was Canon when it actually isn't. And I also wanted to pointed out how poorly Shuro is treated by fandom that I find frustrating. A lot of characters call out Laois on his bs but when Shuro did so on his lack of social cues, the fandom screams that he is abelist when he's not. Shuro is a Japanese man and was raised to be very polite and to be subtle with his discomfort while Laois misunderstood his calm personality and took it as a cue to just cling to Shuro too much. The fact that the show tells the viewers blantly how Laois kept crossing boundaries with Shuro to the point that this man ended up snapping at him once and yet the entire fandom sees this and calls Shuro every slur in the book. Not only that but another thing that annoys me with the fandom's poor treatment of this character is how some say they hate him for "getting in the way" of the Marcille x Falin ship. That's such a stupid reason to hate a character to me and so blindly toxic that they fail to realize how sexist it is. I like the show but behaviors like that from the fandom is why I'm so low key about it and that goes with a lot of other shows I secretly like but can't be open about it bc I do not want to be lumped in with those turds.

I mean I personally like Laios because I like characters like him and Dr. House . People who act nothing like humans and not take serious thing seriously while being a danger to everyone around them. Bojack isn't the greatest comparation to Laios, someone like Dr. House would be, he had a shitty childhood and even before he got crippled, suprise! he was still an insufferable ass. However Dr. House being an insufferable ass but a very good doctor makes the show watchable, its why I can watch 8 seasons of Dr. House without getting bored because of moralisms, and can't even stand an episode of the Good Doctor, or Grey's Anatomy (I just like medical shows where the main character isn't an empath moralistic goody two-shoes, it might be why I like Delicious in Dungeon too) Laios and Shenshi being insufferable and out of the plot makes Delicious in Dungeion watchable as well

As someone who is autistic, I do wish some anime fans would stop just labeling anime characters autistic then passing that little headcanon off like it's hard fact and suddenly using it to excuse any criticism of the character. Unless the creator says they have it, they're not autistic, end of discussion. Laios is another character i can throw on the "he's not autistic, go away tumblr" pile.

I've found it most comes from people who behave the same way the character in question does and don't like the idea of the character being criticized because it's an indirect criticism of them as well. Personally "they're autistic" is an explanation for the behavior of children, and it's on their caregivers to deal with that. If you're an adult, you're expected to know better. If you don't, learn.

The comparison to Bojack really shows off the reason Laois fails as an asshole protagonist despite Bojack actively being a worse person; there's always points in each season where you can see Bojack on the cusp of changing for the better or learning his lesson before inevitably screwing it up. Laois never gets that, he gets checked for his behavior but just shrugs it off and goes on with whatever he's doing, and that's because there's a small piece of Bojack that understands he's an awful person and wants that change, but Laois sees no reason to change because he still feels completely correct in his view of the world.

The autism section of this (and the short bit about the fandom) really speaks to how the fandom reacted to toshiro being mad at laios. people were mad at shiro being mad at laios for what i would say are fair reasons (esp considering laios' ignorance about other people makes him commit racist microaggressions against shiro). people were so focused on laios's seemingly autistic coded background that they refused to entertain the idea that he might not be completely right in that scenario and that his backstory doesn't justify how he treats other people in present time and that people can criticize this behaviour of his.

A response to KP is actually a response to twelve years of harassment and several of my abusers, one of whom raped me for a year, and that kind of thing would take a while. The problem with formulating a response is that this harassment campaign is all accusations and zero actual proof. So it's hard to make a tangible response to anything that isn't just a string of "That isn't true" over and over again.

Initially after viewing the episode where the party fights Fallin and talking about it with a friend they mentioned agreeing with Shuro about Laios being annoying. I was initially surprised because I thought the scene was painting Shuro in the wrong for not being direct, which was probably the intent of the scene, I’m not fully sure. Though after what you talked about with Laios having inappropriate reactions I do more so see what they were on about. I did not really notice initially because I wrote it off as just comedy bit not to be taken too seriously and they still do not bother me though I would have preferred to see Laios be more invested in Fallins rescue. Also, you elaborate on the tone issues you mentioned? I see that the tone is quite volatile but that contrast of the comedy part make the more serious part hit harder, I’m fairly sure you have talked about yourself before, how lighthearted media has their darker moments hit a lot harder due to the contrast. So then what exactly makes it a bad thing when those constants have a more sporadic tempo to them.

Thanks for this. Some valid points. Though from what I've seen, the anime exacerbates a lot these things (maybe I just didn't remember them). Laios has more in common with you as this video's presenter Lily, an unapologetic trans woman with directness trust issues and special interests, than Bojack, a horse who practically coerces others to participate in his harmful vices. Laios is just a socially blind character, rather than LGBT+ Social blindness and special interests, much like LGBT+, are completely neutral factors of course. I don't think they automatically make him autistic either, but it's cool the English VA for Laios could relate to these points

@brianokeefe894 She explained it at the end of the video: The fandom descended upon her, so she listened to their grievances (and abuse), read the manga (or at least skimmed it), and then re-wrote the video to address the grievances, abuse, and manga. (The manga even vindicated some of her positions.)

@i.cs.zamodits Whether the first season is finished doesn't matter. You can eat 3 courses of a 4-course meal, and say: "This is terrible so far, I don't want to continue.". In general, the whole "It gets good eventually" argument (or "might get good" in this case) is just a convenient way to dismiss negative criticism, because it's pretty natural for most people who don't like a series (or game) to not finish it. By this logic you could say: "Only 1% viewers stayed in the theater the whole movie, but they gave it 5/5, so it must be a masterpiece!". You say she missed the premise, but then you don't say what that premise even was. Also, she didn't fully double down on her takes: She said that if you like Laios, then the series isn't so bad (B+).
@munuaispapu47327 ай бұрын
I'm really glad you remade this!! You've made me realise WHY exactly I like this show so much, to be honest. I've been struggling to put this into words. I agree with you that Laios is extremely unlikeable, and his most fatal flaws don't get addressed. And so is EVERY character in this show. By the end of the manga, Senshi is still a recluse who doesn't care about the larger effects of his actions. Chilchuck is still an alcoholic who drove his wife away. Izutsumi's still seventeen. And Marcille is still rather racist and sexist. And i love all of them for it. So many series nowadays seem to think that a character flaw is something to be fixed permanently. In dungeon meshi, though, the characters grow and develop, but they don't finish their lives. There's still more room for them to grow when the adventure ends. I think it really speaks to Ryoko Kui's talent as an author, that every single character grows somewhat during the series, and still has more growing to do after it ends.
