I'm oh so happy you like the food and bucharest :) yes Mici are made absolutely every weekend ( besides winter) on charcoal grill, served with mustard, sometimes bred ( also tossed a little bit on the grill) and cold beer. if you go outside every big city in the nearby forests, lakes, you will find people with an assembled grill. it's like a sport. next time you see a pastry shop try Merdenea ( the big, more traditional version of the cheese thing you got ) bigger is better in this case :)

I went to Romania when I was 19 back in 93 which was just after the revolution and the country was still getting back on its feet and there wasn’t much food not even at the hotels the locals were so generous when we took day trips though and really friendly. It’s really interesting seeing all this food that we never got to see except for some cheese that’s the locals would give us with tomatoes and bread all of which was delicious 😁
@denisegale47566 жыл бұрын
Octav Roman yes, I learnt this whilst I was there. We had a wonderful tour guide who told us all about his experiences on a coach tour around Bucharest it was incredibly moving, eye opening and certainly helped us understand the food shortage more and exactly how generous these people were in giving strangers food. I do remember the cheese and tomatoes being really delicious and the bread, this was something we were given on a trip to Dracula’s castle by some people in the countryside.

You mentioned the smokiness of the zacusca with roast peppers. This is because the peppers are slowly roasted over low fire to singe the peel off as the pepper roasts. The blackened peel is then removed so you don't get the bitterness you would get if the peel remained, and bonus, you get the smoky taste. It's a lovely dish, it takes a bit of work though. Glad you liked it!

Veggies are very tasty in Romania, fruits too. Maybe the soil or the lower yields from less modifies seeds. If I want something similar in Canada I have to buy heirloom, which cost substantially more than regular ones.
@barvdw5 жыл бұрын
Romania gets a lot of sun, normally, and it's not too dry, either. And whether it's intentional or not, most is organic, as many farmers are still small scale ones without the means to go industrial. Some local varieties are likely adding to the diversity, too, as that is something that gets lost, too, with industrialisation. Big supermarkets want all similar sized tomatoes, apples, and the like, preferably with a similar colour, too. Taste? Meh.

I'm an American living in Bucharest since 2007. First visited in 2000. It makes me laugh how suddenly tourists are discovering Bucharest but then again, up till 5 years ago there was a serious stray dog problem and very few cafes and bars open. The locals had no money to spend unless you were fitze (nouveaux riche).
@barvdw5 жыл бұрын
Yeah and those nouveaux riches probably didn't want to have a simple beer, no, it had to be imported and cost three times as much. Nothing against imported beer, but I can hardly taste the difference between a Dutch lager or an Italian or a Portuguese one, and see no interest in ordering them outside of their country.

When back in the UK I recommend you buy a Frys Turkish delight. This is on of the oldest chocolate bars in the UK, it is Turkish delight wrapped in chocolate (turkish delight is a kind of acquired taste, its not jelly, or jam its well turkish delight :D). Another popular way its sold is with a dusting of icing sugar (powered sugar). The flavour is typically "rose" flavour but lemon is also popular. Edmund in the Lion, the Witch and the Warddrobe is famous for eating turkish delight when he first meets the queen/witch in Narnia.
