These steaks + the sausages and apples dish that I made a few months back are the easiest yet most delicious historical dishes yet. You can watch us eat these steaks at the link below. Man, they were good! So good that they have officially been added to our list of regular suppers in this cabin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bme5eXVtqsamo6s

I'm 68. When I was a young boy on the farm, my grandpa used supper leftovers with eggs and back bacon for breakfast at 5 AM. Coffee so strong it could strip paint. Later my Grandma cooked lunch and supper all day on this big old wood fired cast iron stove. It would be 80 degrees outside and 95 degrees in the kitchen. But never have I ever had a better meal since those days.

I've found eating simple like this to be restorative and nourishing. There's far too much junk and loud flavors in most food nowadays and we pay for it with poor health. I also enjoy the ritual of preparing and cooking on open flames when I can. Thanks so much for keeping us inspired with this content.

I cook like this but cut corners. I love my instapot to much to go back to open fires and hauling wood. I use frozen diced turnips, carrots, onions etc whenever possible. But I totally agree that poor health is a result of how we are eating.
@garvensman
@garvensman 2 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with eating healthy and simply, but people who used to eat like this still died early and got cancers and other diseases. They didn’t have the best medicine, but truly organic, pesticide free eating, didn’t save them.
@mountainair
@mountainair 2 жыл бұрын
@@garvensman For sure. We ought not overly romanticize any era in history, but I can say from my own experience that eating simple bears the fruit of good health, so long as you're also taking care of yourself in the other important ways (sleep, exercise, time with friends and family). Eating simple is also a great way to rehabilitate oneself when ill.

@@garvensman cancers and almost every disease have vastly increased in the last 50 years. In fact, this is the only generation where life expectancy will have DECREASED from the previous generation. I don't understand why people keep denying the connection between food and health. it's absurd.

50 years ago, when I was 9 months pregnant, we had a massive snow/ice storm. We were in a rural area. Our power was out 9 days. I cooked everything in our fireplace. We were running out of dry wood, and actually burned unpainted furniture in our attic. We used candles, flashlights, and our camping lanterns. We had no water, no toilets, no heat, but we managed. Baby was born two days after the power came back on. I can’t imagine living like that, it’s hard work.

For safety purposes leather aprons were used to stop sparks from lighting the cook's clothes on fire. I learned to cook in a fireplace and the handiest thing to have was a stool to sit on. The stool allows you to place a cutting board across your lap for a work surface close to the pot/pan on the spider. The stool helps keep your clothes clean. A second stool can be used as a sideboard to hold tools or prepped food. When you stand a stool can be moved easily out of the way. Cast iron forks were made by blacksmiths and no kitchen could function without them. Where are your quilted leather pot holders? 2 potholders with a long length of leather between them to wrap around the cooks waist kept them handy! Great food served cozy indoors never gets old! Thanks for the wonderful aromas!

That looks so delicious. And the atmosphere of this particular video is amazing. The rain, the thunder, the ambience from the candles... beautiful.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you, its tragic. Its time the people of the US stood up and put a stop the lax gun ownership. From the UK.

Hey guys. Know I'm behind a few days but just wanted to say thank you for such a peaceful and calming video. I actually fell asleep to this video last night. I sleep like a newborn during rainy days. I know you both enjoyed the steaks. I know cooking in cast iron and old steel pans and hand made clay makes the best foods. I've been using my stuff since I was 14. I even cooked outside every day for we'll over a year. Everything. Dinners breakfast pies cakes. The mushroom ketchup is the best. I make my own. Make my own sausages and some cured meats. Even pemmican. I have even made my own farm cheese and potted meat. Other than ac and toilet paper I would really enjoy such a life. Other than watching movies from the 30s to 60s and shows like yours and the Townsend to name a few I could live without the modern life. I really enjoy fire for heating and cooking and snuggling with my honey watching your videos. Anyway keep up the videos and thanks again.

Yum! This would be amazing poured onto some mashed potatoes. Of course that might make it more modern though lol. The floured butter made me wonder if the wheat they used then is still available and if you have ever cooked with it. I know the white flour we have now is from dwarf wheat which was made in the 50s or 60s so might be a horse of a different color. I've made einkorn and spelt bread but it would be interesting to see what they used then. Great job!! Definitely mouth watering.
