Nice video guys, thanks for promoting Giardini Naxos and Sicily in general. About private vs free beaches, keep walking along the bay you would have found plenty of free beaches, both sandy or pebbly. The area where you were staying is definitely the one with more beach clubs, although even there you could find some "free" spots. Happy to provide more info if you come back for a sequel :)

What! La Trinacria - my husband and have had that place as our favourite since 2022, where we were welcomed as royalities. The staff are SO friendly and serviceminnded. We are staying at the hotel close to La Trinacria: Time to Smile, Villa Giardini, where the staff and management are just as friendly. That´s the reason why we are simply LOVING Giardini Naxos, and returned to that place year after year after year.

I visit Sicily frequently and fortunately we still have access to the house where my mom was born, so I like hanging out with my relatives. The town is on the coast near Palermo and I understand how crowded the beaches can get. Friends of mine have brought me to more secluded places to swim by boat which is a lot of fun. On one trip, I took a trip to Sardinia with my cousins in mid September and we encountered many beaches that were practically empty. It was awesome!

in Italy the state rents the beaches to private individuals, who create and manage beach clubs, in a country like italy surrounded by the mediterranean sea, where you can go to the beach from april to october, these clubs have become businesses , comparisons can be made with tropical countries or Florida, but in Canada the coast does not allow tourist use of the beaches such as the Mediterranean

Hi! Love the videos. We are going to Sicily later this month and I came across your channel. I’m an attorney in the US. The US and Canada have what’s called the “public trust doctrine.” It means that the government protects the natural resources and they are regarded as important and a right for everyone to enjoy. That’s why you don’t see vast swaths of privatized beaches. Italy does not have the same legal doctrine. You can give it a Google to see where that doctrine is and isn’t recognized.

So interesting.. we've been in quite a few countries now and we don't see this too often. Even most of the Caribbean isn't like this! Thanks Ashley 🤗 - Anna

It is a pity about the private beaches. In Sicily its best to avoid the "lidos" the more tourist beaches for this reason. However there are other beaches, those in reserve parks where this sort of thing is not allowed and they are amazingly beautiful. If you have time try one of them. Spiaggia Marchesa is one. Also August is Ferroaugusto in Italy when everyone takes their vacation leave and descends enmasse onto the beaches. Technically its best to avoid august when travelling to the Med.

Thanks for tips on what to eat while in Sicily! I arrived yesterday for my first ever visit. The beaches are not private all over Europe, but I guess in the Mediterranean (because of its potential for tourism) it has become a business. In Norway, where I'm from, most of the coast is public, and if someone owns a strip of coastline, they still have to let the public use it.

A very beautiful video of the beautiful gardini di Naxos! Really enjoyed your video and insight, in my experience It would be impossible to set a business next to the beach in Canada, it’s the Atlantic Ocean and beach levels are changing every few hours with 100s of meters where this isn’t the case in the med There are wild beaches in the Mediterranean but nobody wants to go there and the reason is the seaweed and animal corpses that are washed out, the sand flees and the flies, in the money you pay for the sun bed includes all the service that makes the beach a pleasant relaxing experience, these are family businesses and the people start from spring by cleaning all the winter mess then treat the sand for bugs then they have daily keeping, also they provide facilities like WC showers etc Also it is pleasant to be able to spend all the day on the beach during hot summer days and these facilities provide anything you need so you don’t have to go. The prices of the sunbeds depend on the area and the ground rent they pay to the municipality, and supply and demand usually weekends are more then weekdays and July August is most expensive then any other time of the year I hope this information was helpful

The name of the restaurant you went to is named after a symbol that Sicily uses on the flag. It is the Trinacria. It looks like a woman with 3 legs. Its actually the symbol of the island. The 3 legs represent the shape of the island. The Peloro,Passero, and Lilibeo, ( north, east, south, and west ). The head is like Medusa. Which represents fertility and prosperity. This head was added during Roman times it also contains 3 stalks of wheat. This is also a symbol of protection. Then the colors of the flag, green, white, red. The green is hope and joy, the white is peace and honesty, and the red is strength and values. Sorry I went on so long. Have a great time.

As to the beaches in Sicily (Italy), obviously the state gets money when giving the management of its beaches to privates, not even that much money though. From January 2024 the state will carry out a public tender and the best offers will grab the stretch of beach they bid for. Why are the beaches given in concession? I don't know, perhaps because in Italy we are not able to manage decently the public "things" or because the lobbies behind this business are powerful or because of both. Yes, as somebody mentioned below, Turkey, Albania, probably France are in similar situations. A disgrace IMO. I've been to Copacabana and Ipanema in Brazil, beaches are free (so far), well kept and respected even though there is a high rate of poverty over there. However, apparently in Sicily only 21.8% of its beaches are private, the Liguria region (Genoa) being the one with the higher percentage with 69.8% 🥲 Lots of love and take care 👍

Im going to get a little in-coming fire but it can be a case of the "tragedy of the commons". If everyone owns it no one owns it. Hence, public areas including beaches can get beat down. A side by side comparision of Lido di Noto and the public beach would prove it. If you are on Silicon Valley where there is a serious tax base things are kept clean and people take great pride in their outdoors areas.
