CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ed (Jon Voight) encounters the Toothless Man (Herbert Coward), but has trouble finding the courage necessary to kill him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Like such other early '70s Hollywood films as Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971), Deliverance ponders violent instincts and definitions of manhood, ideas made all the more pressing by the period's escalating violence and assault on traditional gender roles. Regardless of these headier concerns, the critically praised realism of the action scenes on the river, with the actors performing a lot of the stunts, helped make the film a hit. Shooting on location on the Chattoga River in Georgia, cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond captured the appeal and the peril of the river's pristine isolation, enhancing both the adventure's visceral thrills and Dickey's philosophical inquiry into man's true nature. Deliverance was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, although Dickey's screenplay of his novel was passed over, as was Reynolds' star-making turn. With its chilling sense of infinite menace, Deliverance spoke to contemporary anxieties over what anyone could do, given the right (or wrong) circumstances.
CREDITS:

Cast: Jon Voight, Herbert 'Cowboy' Coward
Director: John Boorman

Absolutely, I remember 20 years ago like it was yesterday resting face. I'd seen depictions of bad people and laughed. It was too funny to me. Deliverance on the other hand brought it home to me 9n the couch as a teenager and had me at the seat of my pants the entire film. There aren't many actors and films that do that to me especially the way film is now.

They not only used Danny as an extra in that movie, but also as like a technical supervisor (on boxing) as well as a tech supervisor on the prison scenes (as Danny had been a boxing champion IN PRISON in REAL LIFE!! 🤣) Damn,, I THOUGHT I was the only one that loved that movie that much! ... as a German Biologist - when I first saw this film on German TV - I was Stunned - how REAL the scenery is - still today. A sort of Conrad “Heart of Darkness” - when you go unprepared into foreign territory meeting the wild tribes - who defend their territory at all cost. I see it as a master Piece and bought the DVD... I see it as a form of “Karma” - we all pay for what we intend and act. Revenge....

This film was made where I live now and have lived for my entire life - in the northeast corner of the state of Georgia on the southern tip of the Appalachian Mountain range. This particular scene was shot in Tallulah Gorge which is the biggest crevasse east of the Mississippi River and considered "the Grand Canyon of the East". The environment here is almost like a tropical rainforest at high elevation.

UCSPanter20 That's NOT what the film was about. There were a lot of unknowns in this movie: i.e. whether it was the second rapist who was shooting at them, or whether it was just the deputy's brother-in-law who was out hunting and went missing. Both were missing their front teeth; but this guy had DENTURES. Even up close, neither John Voight or Ned Beatty could tell if it was the right guy, after he was dead. Ned Beatty even puts a LAMPSHADE on the issue, by asking "are you sure it was the right guy, and not just someone up there huntin'?" The sheriff suspects that something happened, but he lets it go because he decides that it would cause more harm than good to push the issue- and he's the played by the WRITER. So his moral is clearly that the river doesn't judge. I think he took that scene from "To Kill a Mockingbird," where the Sheriff lets Boo Radley get away with saving Scout by killing "Papa," since it would just make Boo a hero, and he was so shy.

It does seem odd when Ed's vocalizations suddenly just disappear while all the other sound effects remain, but the silence really does convey the suspense and terror well. The other version, with the ominous banjo notes, does so just as well, but in a totally different way. Either way, I'm really glad that Boorman was smart enough to not use conventional suspense music; in the hands of another director this could have sounded (and probably looked) like a typical cheesy big-budget B-movie.

The sound in this scene is not the original version. You can tell when Jon Voight takes out the arrow and opens his mouth, but no yelling comes out. In the version they used to show, a somber, deep bass plays in the background while the hillbilly is approaching Voight (it is still heard later in the movie, when Voight overhears Ned Beatty talking to the police). And Voight yells when he removes the arrow and then again when he covers his face. I do not know why it was changed.

Why does this scene need any explanation? Voight shot the guy through the neck, fell on one of the other arrows on his belt quiver. He hit the guy in the throat you can clearly see the point sticking out the back of his neck as he falls.

Does anyone have any info at all on the composer and/or performer of the uncredited incidental music? I don't mean "Dueling Banjos", I mean those odd bits of somber banjo and synthesizer that pop up throughout the movie (although not so much in this particular cut). And incidentally, it just occurred to me that the ominous synth dirge at the end, leading up to the hand coming out of the water, sounds very much like the opening music for a later Warner Bros. classic, The Shining. I wonder if Wendy Carlos had Deliverance in mind, or perhaps a bit more.

So the moral of this story really is: If you try to kill someone with a bow and arrow, make sure they can't finish you off before they bleed out from the arrow since they don't kill instantly! That was seriously a fucking awesome shot though where you can't even really tell if that guy got hit with the arrow but he just slowly loses energy till he kills over with it right through his neck! Fucking awesome setup! At first I actually though someone else shoot him from behind. This is so much better!

There was a bunch of shitty movies at that time coming out. the 70's was not a great time for hollywood IMO, this movie and a few others notwithstanding. wiremessiah I disagree with EVERYTHING you just said. The 70’s were the absolute golden age of film. You had masterpieces such as This, Badlands, A Clockwork Orange, Godfather 1&2, Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now. You had great action movies such as the first 3 dirty harry films, Death Wish, Rolling Thunder, and The Getaway. You had some of the finest westerns ever made, like The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, and Bad Company. You had comedies that still hold up today like Blazing Saddles. And too many great car chase movies to list. The dark and gritty look of 70’s films looks beautiful and very natural especially when restored right. Films in the 80’s (with a number of great exceptions) are bright, flashy, gaudy, plastic messes just like the clothes, music, and people of the time. The 70’s were so much better

Which of course, is why armies don't use longbows anymore. I guess even Benjamin Franklin could be wrong sometimes. But still, imagine if firearms never advanced beyond 18th century technology, and we still used horses... Franklin might well have imagined that kind of world. Might horse bowmen (a'la the Mongols) be useful in a "special forces" sort of role as shock troops or whatever? (In WW2, Cossack horsemen are said to have caused the Germans a lot of trouble on the Eastern Front.)

@crominion6045

When the guy with the rifle shot at him, he released the arrow from his bow and it went through the guy's neck, so when the guy finally starts to fall down you see the feathers sticking out the front of his neck and most of the rest of the arrow sticking out the back. When the guy with the bow fell, he fell on the bow which had an extra arrow attached to the side of it in a bow quiver and it went through his side. 👍

Yes that's what happened. He let his arrow fly and then fell backwards from the wayward gunshot onto one of his own arrows. I think it's purposely shot like this so that you think he flubbed it and never got off the shot and that he fell on the arrow he had nocked.

That's an empty shell casing being ejected from the hillbilly's lever-action rifle. It's a top eject Winchester lever-action which is why you can't mount a scope to them. A Marlin lever-action is a side eject instead of top eject. What you saw is an empty brass shell casing flying forward after being ejected from the receiver to load another round into the rifle - which the hillbilly then fires into the ground.

Because Lewis saw someone on top of the gorge before they went down the rapids and the desperation in his voice and actions were clear. Now weather the guy got a clean hit or not is still up for debate and the final decision comes down to who is currently watching.
