About the banjo player Billy Redden: He portrayed a banjo-playing "local" during the film's famous "dueling banjos" scene. Boorman felt that Redden's skinny frame, large head, and almond-shaped eyes made him the natural choice to play the part of an "inbred from the back woods." Because Redden could not play a banjo, he wore a special shirt which allowed a real banjo player to hide behind him for the scene, which was shot with carefully chosen camera angles that would conceal the player, whose arms were slipped around Redden's waist to play the tune.

The lake scenes were filmed when Duke power was filling up lake Occonee for the nuclear plant, and at Lake Jocasse SC - the clip at the end of the movie of a cemetery being moved is a clip of my grandmother's family graveyard being relocated downstream to right next to the power plant, and the hand scene was filmed at what is now Devil's Fork state park on lake Jocasse SC.

jeffrey"But actually, that kid was the most harmless person in the whole movie. Just a non-verbal autistic savant who knew how to copy anything he heard on guitar or banjo with his banjo and that was about all that he knew or did. Totally harmless, probably.

Years before my Mother passed away, here in a little Mizzurah Ozarks Town along I -44, a Man stopped by the small store where she worked cashier, in his hat, shorts, and sunglasses, driving a normal little car, purchasing some odds and ends, small little things, my Mom recognized, when no one else did,,,peering up at her was Ned Beatty,,she asked him his name,,he chuckled, and confirmed, she asked him for his Autograph, he gladly gave it, told her he was just passing through, all alone, on his way back through to California,,I've always thought that was so Cool, and him a Movie Star, but so down to earth, and very humble,,,just normal like us,,,,Miss You Mom,,,👍👌☝️💪💯🤠
