Deliverance | Shelfside Review

After finishing this Christian dungeon crawler campaign board game, Shelfside brings another review! Play as angels sent down from heaven to defeat demons and princes of darkness with 1-4 players. You'll have to strategize with skills and level up cards to win against difficult missions with their own unique mechanics, all on a tabletop with angelic minis! But there may be some downsides like rulebook wackiness and balancing shenanigans.

Just thought of another gameplay pro! I didn't mention that Deliverance handles player elimination really well thanks to its pray-to-revive mechanic, and while dead you can still use prayer cards and pray actions! 56:33 Apparently, this bonus damage is 2 more damage total distributed as you wish, not an increase in the attack value. Another point for Earthquake! Also, in my personal score I don't know why I said Gloom/Frosthaven wound is end of turn when it's actually start of turn, which is a pretty big difference in power level. -Daniel

This game is fantastic! The designer lives couple hours away from me, and he hosts Deliverance nights in FLGS, where we can play custom scenarios that he makes. (All the scenarios are available for free - on bgg). Game is awesome, designer is fantastic, love the theme, looking forward to the expansion.

Ah, man. I wish there were some Wheels/Thrones and Cherubim as playable characters. You could perhaps give them a hint on that. Looks pretty fun! (Just my opinion though 😅)

Totally agree with the simultaneous turn point. Unsettled wrecked me forever, in the best way. I would totally love a Deliverance experience with simultaneous mechanisms. Also… this is literally a masterclass on how to provide feedback on a game… Bravo!

Yeah the Rulebook is definitely my biggest con for the game. But I love Angels in Fantasy settings, so this really is right up my alley. And yes base rings would instantly fix the problem of distinguishing the Angels on the board.

56:35 Rule clarification: that damage is split. It is a flat 2 damage increase, not 2 damage per instance of damage from a skill. It does not work the way empower works. This is confirmed in their discord. This is a major point of annoyance for me because there is almost no distinction between the way these prayer cards and empower are worded, so it seems they should function the same way.

Love this game... I think the expansion will fix most of the cons! Between Deliverance, Gloomhaven/Frosthaven/GH2E/CS/ToA and Legendary... I have already exceeded my commitment to lifestyle games. Everyone RAVES about Frosthaven. I played Gloomhaven a few times and just couldn’t quite get into it. 😔 I cut my teeth on HeroQuest/Mutant Chronicles as a kid and Descent during college, so maybe I’m just looking for a more classic approach? KD:M is my current heavy game.

Hey guys! Love your reviews! I really resonated with what Daniel talked about in his personal score of being used to heavier, crazier games and thus my standards are way too high. What games would you guys recommend that have gotten close to that gloomhaven quality? Like you guys, I'm also searching for that high quality game with ameritrash level production value while hating dice but unfortunately I don't have time to actually complete a long campaign.

You hate dice? Have you ever played Mage Knight? It's got a huge amount of content in terms of how long it takes to play an individual game, I've played it six times and still haven't introduced a single piece of expansion content yet because the base game is already so rich and varied (and there is LOTS of expansion content: three new heroes, a bunch of artefacts and advanced skills, two new factions that have their own skill trees and enemies, a whole new boss enemy and campaign associated with him, and a bunch of new monsters, allies, and locations)

I ended up passing on this one mostly because my friend and I ran into really bad balancing issues on the TTS module. Granted, they only had the skirmish mode available, but I know that's how it would mostly get played. Essentially the cons you listed were very familiar, so it seems like they didn't fix my main concerns. Sounds like they're doing a reprint/1.5 and expansion campaign, so maybe they'll work on some of the issues for that.
