Dell WD19TB / WD19TBS Thunderbolt Docking. Why docking? What is the difference between WD19TB and WD19TBS? When would I use a docking station over a Hub Display? What about MAC support? Take a look at the little known Dell docking accessory the MK15.

Hi Michael, i currently have the WD19 dock with the 130w power supply but this isn't sufficient to power my laptop I was wondering could you tell me the part/model number of the 180w power supply that is compatible with the WD19 Dock. I have looked on the Dell site and it lists 3 different 180w power supplies but does not state which is for the dock. Also would the Dock screen mount adapter work with the 43 inch Dell monitor as I know it uses screw rather than the click in VESA mount.

Michael, I have an HP EliteBook 850 from my employer and an Alienware M17 for my personal use. I have 2 Dell 25” UHQ monitors a Logitech Wireless Keyboard & mouse, and a Fujitsu S1500 SnapScan scanner running on the USB ports. I would like to connect the monitors to the two DisplayPort connections on the WD19TBS, and everything else on the USB connections. I understand that the Alienware will have to use it’s own power supply since it’s 240W, and I actually planned on keeping both laptops on their own power bricks to keep the load off the Dock. I’m concerned about compatibility between the dock and the two laptops since they aren’t Dell units. Do you think they will work sending all the data over the Thunderbolt 3 connection?

Hi Michael - Just got a WD19 180W (non TB), and two Dell s2721d monitors. My laptop is a XPS 9365 All in one, 2016 model. I have two high quality DP cables. I cannot get the WD19 to display QHD on both screens. It will display QHD on one monitor, and some weird resolution, 2048x1080 on the other. Dell says its because my XPS is older and is only equipped with Dp1.2 and not DP1.4. Does this make sense to you and if so, is there a way to upgrade my otherwise perfect XPS 9365 to DP1.4 so that I can enjoy QHD on both monitors. Any help you can offer, would be appreciated.

@@MichaelOHanian Thanks Michael - I've figured that out this past weekend. One S2721d is running at full QHD and 60hz, while the other is at 2048x1080 with is refresh lowered to the only selctable choice of 23.997hz. That's a weird resolution yet it uses the full screen and is clear w/o flicker. Can you confirm that my XPS 9365 should be able to support 2 QHD monitors, + it's internal screen? The XPS is from 2017 and is not QHD, only FHD. I feel like I have not got a clear answer to that. Dell says the problem is the XPS is older and designed to support DP1.2 and not DP1.4, yet the WD19 and S2721d are looking for DP14. I hear them, but its seem hard to accept. I feel like either I have a bad WD19, or a drive is the problem. I've reinstalled all relevant drivers. Same issue. I've scowered the web for other users with XPS 9365 and dual QHDs but found nothing, only guys with FHD. If you can answer the compatibility question, that would be great.

Hi Michael! Quick question for you. Could I trouble you to measure the length of the power cable that runs from the wall to the AC adapter, and the length of the USB-C cable that runs from the AC adapter to the port on the laptop itself? I chatted with Dell support on the site and they said 6 meters. I'm sure they meant 6 feet but I also needed the lengths of both cables separately, to correctly measure/plan out where I will mount the dock under my desk. Thanks so much for your helpful videos, definitely leaves me feeling more informed about an upcoming purchase I'll be making.

@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 2 жыл бұрын
It might be the system you are using. What systems are you connecting to the dock? The Power button on the dock is meant to serve as an external Power button for the attached system, replicating the system's own built-in Power button, thereby allowing you to do things like power on or wake up the system while its lid is closed. However, that only works when the system you're using actually has firmware-level support for an external Power button. It works with XPS, Latitude, and Precision systems

I have the WD19TBS and it definitely will not work with 2 x Dell monitors connected to my personal Apple Macbook Pro 2019 model (intel chipset and 4 x Thunderbolt 3 ports). My work laptop Dell Latitude 7410 also will not work on this dock when connected to 2 x Dell U2722D monitors. Workaround for personal and work is to only have one monitor connected to the WD19TBS and the other monitor connected directly to either the Macbook or the Dell 7410. This is not ideal or what I was hoping by using a Dock but it's a workaround that seems to work.

I've connected the laptop to the ultrasharp via USB-C (same one you have) and then the (cheaper) second display via daisy chain (USB-C to display port). The second monitor runs at 4k, however only at 30hz, not 60hz which isn't very useable. My IT department told me the limitation was the integrated graphics in the laptop, which couldnt push two high res displays. I understand you can connect multiple displays with the doc, but ultimately are you still constrained by your laptop GPU? Michael, I just found your vid while researching docks. I have an Inspiron 17-7779 with an NVIDIA GeForce 940MX, 65W power supply built in 2017. It has a USB-C connection next to the power connection. I would like to run two U3223QE monitors with the laptop closed and would like to use one of the WD series docks to do this. I found a 3 page document, last updated 3/29/2022, titled Dell Commercial Docking Compatibility. It has a long list of Dell models cross referenced to various WD19 models and the WD22 showing which ones are compatible. Unfortunately, there are no Inspiron models listed. Is my laptop compatible with the original WD19 180W and will the USB-C port on my laptop accept power from it? Assuming I would like to use a dock I buy now with future computers, is the WD22TB4 backwards compatible with my laptop? What would the difference be between the WD22TB4 and an original WD19 180W that had been modified with a WD22TB4 module (P/N 470-AFIT)? Does that module effectively turn the WD19 into WD22TB4? Or are subtle differences? Finally, would that WD19 always be up-gradable, if for example TB5 or TB6 comes out in the future? it might be a few years before I replace my laptop and TB4 might be out of date by then. Thanks

I have the WD19TB at home connected to my Macbook Air M2 with two monitors. Previously I was using a different dock that worked properly but needed a DisplayLink driver due to the M2 limitations. Both monitors were connected via HDMI to that dock and extended correctly using DisplayLink. I downloaded the displaylink drivers but I still can't get my display extended to each monitor. Does the WD19TB support DisplayLink? Is this issue because of the displayport connection? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Michael, thanks for this great video. WD19DC dock is your best bet. WD19TBS, only supply 90W of power. WD19DC has dual USB-C and will supply the power you need. Note: WD19DC is not Thunderbolt. Hi Michael. I am getting a new Del Precision 5550 and I am looking at docking options. I'm taking this laptop to my overseas office where I use engineering programs. I will also connect it to 2 Samsung curved displays. Do you think the WD19DC is a good fit for this application?
@MichaelOHanian
@MichaelOHanian 3 жыл бұрын
Congratulations! You are going to love the 5550. The WD19DC (or WD19DCS) a great docking station. I would still recommend the WD19TB for the 5550 because you get Thunderbolt and can support more displays than the WD19DC/S. The WD19DC/S is required if you go to the 5750, or 7000 series Precision. It gives you up to 210W of power that you need for these systems.

Q1. I don't know why. I can only speculate that UASP is not used often. Q2. I would go with the WD19. Getting Thunderbolt would not get you any advantage with your set up. WD19TBS would be a good recommendation for future proofing you docking. Note: the WD19TBS has just been replaced by the WD22TB4 (Thunderbolt 4 dock).

I have latest drivers for both monitors and graphic display adapters and latest bios for laptop. Can you please assist thanks

Let me start by saying, you have an awesome setup! I would put in a ticket to Dell support right away. The WD19TB dock supplies 130W of power to the Precision 5550 (so you should not be getting an slow charge warning). Hi Michael. Great video! So I got the Alienware M15 R3 and I'm very confused with these docks. Is there a Docking station that is both Thunderbolt 3 (fast data transfer) and has the power of 240W (standard power brick on this laptop)? I guess no... I assume I have to choose between high performance AND the 4K/multi-display capability right? So WD19TB would give me a better visual experience in terms of 4K image, of FHD at a high refresh rate. Where WD19DC would supply more power so the graphics and CPU can run at full speed. Can I have WD19TB and my main power supply plugged in directly to the laptop, or would that destroy the laptop? Dell has very little information about these kinds of things in relation to Alienware.

Hi Michael. Thank you for informative video. One advisor at Dell told me that WD19TBS is a newer version have the latest drivers. However, from your video, it sounds like that aside from Audio port, the monitor driving capabilities are the same. Why then WD19TBS comes with 240W power supply and WD19TB with 180W (based on some comparisons I found)?

Hi Alex, The WD19TB and WD19TBS have the same performance and capability, minus the Audio port. They both come with a 180W power supply. The WD19DC comes with a 240W power supply. The WD19DC is recommended for more power hungry Precisions, such as the 7550 and 7750. They require 210W of power, more than 130W of power from the WD19TB/S (WD19TBS has a 180W power supply but it feeds only 130W of power to the notebook). Let me know that makes since to you.

I believe people are mixing up the docking stations. The WD19S has two versions. One with 130W power supply (delivers 90W to notebook) and another with 180W power supply (delivers up to 130W to the notebook). The WD19TBS has 180W power supply (delivers up to 130W to notebook). There is another dock, the WD19DCS that comes with 240W power supply (delivers up to 210W of power to the notebook). Usually the WD19DCS is for the 7000 class Precision Notebooks (they need the extra power).

@@MichaelOHanian The watts are because these are powered Docking stations. So each port gets there own separate powers...And Thunderbolt 3 external drives, monitors need that function....Where as hubs the more you plug into too them. The slower to hub gets.... And I don't know many Laptops that take 200 watts..As them batteries would be fried with that many amps being pushed into them....The average charging rate for 99% of Laptops is around 60 watts.

Why is there not a recall on this? The plastic is EXTREMELY weak in the dual USB-A jack on the back of the dock. If you look around, it's easy to see that tons of WD19(S)/WD19TB(S)/WD19DC(S) users are reporting that the top port in the dual USB-A jack broke. It's the piece of plastic that goes inside the USB-A male plug. Upon inspection, it is easy to see how weak and brittle that piece of plastic is. Dell did NOT include that particular port in the warranty. This needs to be recalled. Don't pull an Apple and gaslight users into thinking that they are using the port wrong.
