The Dell G3 gaming laptop has nice specs for a good price, making it a great budget option, but how hot does it get and is there any throttling that affects performance? I’ve tested the i7-8750H and Nvidia 1060 Max-Q graphics to see how it performs, and will show you how undervolting and overclocking affects performance and temperatures in a number of benchmarks.

I was undervolting a friend's Inspiron 5480 and I realized uninstalling "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" allows me to change the CPU's TDP and that clockspeed won't bounce all over the place anymore during gameplay or stress tests...before that I could set any number in XTU and it won't take, it'll just stick 15W and regularly reduce to 8W and back, without hitting any thermal limit.

To be honest I don't actually know how to limit clock speed, because it's not something I want to do or recommend doing. If I'm paying for a level of performance, I want that result and I'm not going to cap myself for worse levels of performance, I'll just deal with the extra heat, but that's me - but yeah sorry cannot answer as I simply don't have experience doing it.

@@JarrodsTech The only way to reduce CPU temps on my Dell G3 without thermal repaste or applying liquid cooling is by disabling turbo boost. Undervolt to -0.125V makes no difference. Fans are cleaned. CPU reaches 100 Degrees while Turbo boosting to 3.96 GHZ during gaming.

Hey Jarrod, I recently bought the 15 inch i7 8750H and 1050 Ti variant, and have been impressed with it so far, however my one problem are the temperatures. In my house there is no air con and my room’s temperature easily goes to 27-30C. CPU gets into the 90s sometimes which worries me. I undervolted it but it still goes to the 90s. Then I disabled turbo boost which seems to work like a charm, CPU temperature dropped to about 60C, with no noticeable difference in most games, EXCEPT for GTA V. If I disable the turbo boost in that game there is a lot of stuttering. GPU never gets too hot at all, in Witcher 3 which stresses the GPU a lot, it only went up to 85C on a hot day. I’m wondering if you know of any other cooling solutions? I know about a cooling pad, and reposting, but I don’t want to repaste and potentially damage my laptop or void the warranty. Currently I lift it up using two bottle caps, and that also seemed to help. Is it fine if the CPU goes into the 90s sometimes while gaming? There is no throttling, and I usually don’t play for that long, 1-2 hours per session usually.
@JarrodsTech
@JarrodsTech 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be too worried about 90, but that's me. It will just throttle back if it gets too hot, it's not as if it will melt itself or anything, worst case it will shut off if it came to it. Cooling pad, repasting, and CPU undervolting are the best/only options I can think of. Raising it off the desk would help, a cooling pad does that too of course. The 8750H gets hot in pretty much all laptops, just how that CPU is unfortunately.

Yeah the 8750H is definitely a hot one, almost always power limit throttled under full load to try and control the temperatures which still usually get to around 90c. I might do a video in the future about cooling improvements, and test cooling pad, undervolting, fan speed increase, and thermal paste change - I can do this now that I have my own 8750H laptop 😃 I haven't actually gone through all my data and worked out what's the coolest, I also want to do some sort of round up video with like top 5 laptops or something so I would look at including this in that.

I have a Dell G3 15 with I5 8300H, 8GB Ram, 1TB Hybrid HDD and a GTX 1050TI from the Microsoft Store. Got it for 650$ USD on sale. Need help with lowering down thermals. Undervolting to -0.150V reduces CPU temps from 100 Degree to 90 Degrees only. Disabling Turbo Boost Drops the temps to 80 Degrees. Disabling Turbo Boost + undervolting reduces CPU Temps to 70-75 Degrees but looses on performance. I dont wish to reapply thermal paste or try liquid cooling as it's a brand new laptop. Turbo Boost on this laptop only throttles at reaching 100 Degree C. I feel 90-100 degrees temps continuous are bad for hardware life. The keyboard gets very hot. Not quite, but depends. In my testing the Helios 300 gets to 93c in similar tests on the CPU which is hotter, but the graphics are a fair bit cooler despite also being better, not passing 76c.

1060 or 105ti is louder?

I haven't tested both in this laptop so I cannot answer, however the 1060 does use more power so in theory it may need to run the fan a bit warmer to compensate, but I cannot confirm.

@@JarrodsTech . Desktop around $1500 in 2005 initial startup windows XP BSOD 6 months later had to be repaired because of another BSOD it would not started up again. Laptop late 2007 early 2008 windows Vista initial startup BSOD once again about 4 months later had to have it repaired. The power cord with the three pronges one fell out but Dell would not ship me one or fix it even though I had extended warranty. I bought new one from 3rd party then found put later from different tech support rep the warranty would cover the power cord issue. I was never offered to be sent a new one or reimbursement for having to buy one from a 3rd party. I do look at Dell from time to time but very hesitatent .

Hmm I guess if that personally happened to me my opinion might be different, but that is quite some time ago, a lot can change over the years, many brands I currently review I used to think were crap due to bad products have come around over the years and improved significantly.

Sounds alright assuming that's under some sort of load. You could try a cooling pad or undervolting if you're not comfortable with those temperatures, but to me that sounds acceptable if no throttling

It depends based on the specific CPU, there's no one size fits all number, you just have to experiment with it. Maybe start at -0.1v and go from there.

Do not buy a Dell gaming laptop, they overheat and thus the performance is greatly affected. My friend spent 2000$ and deeply regrets it. He sent it over 2 times for repair and so far they are unable to fix his overheating/throttling problem. Since it was bought 30 days ago he is unable to get a refund and he is left with a bad computer who cant play the games he want. Stay away from Dell, you've been warned. After doing some research I figured that undervolting -125 is possibly a solution if anyone have tryed that please let me know.
