Dell's G-Series laptops truly lead the way for budget gaming laptops.
The G3 is thinner than the the G7 and has more subdued looks so is ideal for someone who tavels and wants to have affordable gaming.

I bought mine in 2018. 17” i7, 8gb ram, 128gb nvme, 1tb platter and 1060 gb for $899 from Dell. What I’ve done since: Upgrade nvme to 512gb Samsung, change platter drive to 1tb ssd, repaste, throttle stop to limit cpu at 2.2ghz and over clock the panel to 90hz. I must say I’m very satisfied. I play many games at 90fps with no screen tearing. I over clock the gpu. So far my temps are cpu 78C and gpu 68C. Laptop on a cooler. Very tolerable. It served me well. I’m looking into an i7 11800 and an RTX 3060.

Yes, its the type of laptop you can take any where , its fairly slim too. I like having the portability of a laptop, I find I don't use my desktop any more which I feel guilty about as I have an 8 core CPU/ 1080ti set up.

Bought the version with 1050ti for $650 after tax and rebate. Put a 500gb 970 EVO NVMe, Intel 9560 wifi card (swapped for twice the wireless performance) and another 8GB stick of 2666 RAM. That brought the price to about $917 after tax with upgrades and all. A very good price for the specs and an easily portable gaming laptop.

You showed the inside of the bottom panel, thank you! The G5 (and I suppose the G7 as well) also has the anti-vibration padding for the HDD slot. I replaced the stock 5400rpm drive in the G5 with a 2.5inch 1TB Seagate Barracuda Pro (which was supposed to be loud and what not), but there's no difference in heat or noise compared to the stock HDD, while getting better speeds. Also, I'd say that 5400rpm SSHDs are not worth it. My previous laptop had a 7200rpm SSHD and that was a really good drive, 'cos even though there would be a difference in speed between the cached data and normal data, it was not as obvious/noticeable as with the 5400rpm SSHD. And for anyone looking to purchase a laptop with 8th gen. Intel CPUs, follow the undervolting recommendations by OWNorDisown and the profile settings from notebookreview or notebookcheck, they make an enormous difference in thermals, noise and power consumption.

Really good specs but it is a shame how many corners they had to cut with the display, so you'll probably want to use an external monitor with this device. Amazing pricing and value, that's for sure. If you have a bit more money, for 1,199 USD the new Helios 300 has a full HD IPS 144 Hz monitor with an 8th gen i7, a full on 1060 6gb and 16gb ddr4 ram, with an 256GB NVMe SSD right out of the box.

I bought this Laptop a week ago, and I am right now returning it back to dell. This laptop can run games and all; BUT, Its useless because dell thought it would be a great idea to put in a cheap dull display that would cause eye strain within 1 hour of use in a gaming laptop. Overall, I do think I will stick with HP on this one, as their laptops don't cause eye strain for me. I've tried EVERYTHING to try fix this dull display, calibrated, tried different programs like flux, called intel and dell support, updated drivers, changed color settings, and I even tried finding a blue light filter online which wont work because they don't fit on this screen. So yes, overall; don't waste your time on this product, unless you want to permanently damage your eyes.

Thank you so much for this. I was debating between this and the HP Pavilion Core i5-8300H, then I watched your review on it, and decided to order this one instead. It should be here by Thursday. I don’t really care if this G3 has a dim display. This seems to be a good starting gaming computer (my first time PC gaming).. more then likely the most graphic-hungry game I will l play is GTA V.. other than that I will stick to like low end games (Getting Over It). I can always upgrade to a better PC in the future if need be.

I just compared i5 8300h and desktop i7 7700 on cpu world, and they have EXACTLY THE SAME frequency for all 4 cores(after tweaks in throttlestop of course) which is insane considering the form factor and the fact that it's an i5 ;) definitely getting this laptop, I'm just hoping that I'll be able to undervolt it as much as you did yours, could get unlucky with the silicon lottery.

Yeh, Intel confuse the hell out of everyone with their naming schemes these days. An i5 used to a dual core but now, with the 8th gen they are quad cores but not all made equal. This CPU is slightly faster than a stock clocked i7 7820hk..

what do you mean i5 used to be a dual core? I mean it's a quad core since 6-th gen(just those didn't have HT before) :) the h series that is. And imo Intel should leave a big room for undervolting these, because they got greedy and made 8-th gen i5-s quad cores with hyper threading instead of 6 core without HT. The least they could do to compensate is providing good silicon for them

Just a heads up: if you turn off battery boost in Nvidia settings, update the graphics card drivers, and change the power plan to best performance as well as turn off v-sync and change fps cap from display based to 300. You can get way better fps on games like overwatch. I get around 140fps on overwatch with epic settings compared to the 60 you get.

Idk why reviewers keep benchmarking at ultra settings especially with a budget gpu like the 1060 max q. The reference point should be targeting 60 fps with a mix of medium to high settings. The graphics differences between ultra and high are quite small meanwhile the performance gap is massive

The P775TM only has a 1080p or 4k screen, not the QHD like mine and can only hold one GTX 1080, mine can run SLI. But its cheaper and slimmer. I see they now come with the i7 8086k CPU..nice !

Ron Abarintos I think fx503vd is better for almost the same price. THE fx553vd only have one cooling fan and that sucks because it will limit your performance bcs of bad temp... The fx503vd has 2 fans with the same specs of fx553vd. :D , hope I helped!

Hey mate, how does your unit not thermal throttle? Mine immediately throttles when I open a game. Is it time to repaste and what paste should i use?

I repasted and still thermal throttles. Use throttle stop and turn off turbo boosting. It’ll limit the CPU to 2.2 ghz which is still plenty fast. Over clock your display panel to 90hz. Makes a huge difference

I have a Dell G3 15 with I5 8300H, 8GB Ram, 1TB Hybrid HDD and a GTX 1050TI from the Microsoft Store. Got it for 650$ USD on sale. Need help with lowering down thermals. Undervolting to -0.150V reduces CPU temps from 100 Degree to 90 Degrees only. Disabling Turbo Boost Drops the temps to 80 Degrees. Disabling Turbo Boost + undervolting reduces CPU Temps to 70-75 Degrees but looses on performance. I dont wish to reapply thermal paste or try liquid cooling as it's a brand new laptop. Turbo Boost on this laptop only throttles at reaching 100 Degree C. I feel 90-100 degrees temps continuous are bad for hardware life. The keyboard gets very hot. Hopefully someone here has the same rig and can help me out. Note: The laptop crashed at -0.170V undervolt.

Have you tried adjusting the multipliers to a level that doesn't limit performance but , combined with your undervolt, attains suitable temps ie. below 90 degrees? I would start at say 3700 Mhz and work downwards. My HP Pavilion 15 had to drop down to 3300 Mhz - same specs as yours.

Great vid man! I live in the PH and sadly certain configurations for the G series arent available. Should I go for the G3 I7 8750H with GTX 1050 TI or the Dell 7577 with 1060 Max Q. Need help deciding for a laptop I can use for college and gaming in the long run.

I would go for the G3 as the i5 8300h is faster than the i7 7700hq and if you get the i7 8750h G3 that's faster still..unless if the 7577 is heavily discounted.

The base clock will be 2.3 Ghz but it will boost up to 4 Ghz (in practice a bit less) , all depending on the work load and the power requirements

I dont see the point of including an external gpu dock in reviews with laptops already having 1050+ graphics. People buying 1050/1060 laptops will not be interested and will not be able to afford an external 1070/1080/1080ti card+box. That is the sole reason them buying these capable budget laptops. Prior to shooting that clip I ran Doom 3 times, measuring min 70, 73 and 82. I shot the clip after my script. Initially it was dipping like crazy, so I checked and R6S was still running in the background, so I restarted and did it again. The thing is , if it reads anything off the hard drive it is slow, I suspect that is what it was doing. You get these things from time to time. It's not like it went to 20 and stayed there...

That is actually a different cable, you will notice that the TB3 port is further to the back, obscured by the gaming box.

Just got the g3 3579 from microcenter for 720$ (tax already included) and it a nice laptop and build but I got a couple of question. Can I have the fans completely off or extremely low at desktop idle. Dont want people hearing my laptop fans while I am in class. Also I saw older g3 have had a slower wifi card is this the case for this model. Not to sure about wifi but if so I dont mind buying an upgraded card. I'm not a laptop person so is there anything you can recommend for getting good performance on this laptop. I am going to look up how to undervolt gpu/cpu and use intel uhd for desktop rather then the 1060. I also went on to dell website and installed the driver listed there but idk what else. The help would be appreciated!

Yes, I do think that is best. I prefer to go with a 500GB one if I go the m.2 route - usually just buy a SATA as its cheaper. That way you get space perhaps for your favourite games and most commonly used programs plus windows updates. You can also go the 2.5" SATA route, they are cheaper now - 1TB for $190 even.

Hi! Is it good a good choice for starcraft 2? Starcraft 2 requirments : Intel core 5 series Nvidia GeForce GTX 60 The game is from 2010, so i think it will run very smooth even tough i play 6 hours per day. I think it would not overheat while playing the game, but maybe i am wrong.

It is an overkill on starcraft 2! It can run it perfectly with no drops. I have a 1050 ti which is 30% slower and I can run it at 60 fps just fine

Hey, I just saw G3's specs and the Wifi card is 802.11ac (1x1) while most of other laptops have 802.11ac (2x2)? And that has something to do with wifi signal strength if I'm not wrong. So what difference will it make on gaming performance and daily usage?

The 1x1 wireless card means it has 1 receive antenna and 1 transmit antenna and can do a theoretical max transmission rate of 72Mbps. A 2x2 has 2 antennas for both receive and transmit and can do a theoretical max of 150Mbps. I believe range is better with the 2x2 as well. I didn't notice much difference when using mine.

Thanks ! Glad you liked it 😀 The i5 does use less power as does the 1050ti so I agree with both options. From a gaming perspective it's best to have a more powerful GPU of course . The i7/ GTX 1060 version of this does run hotter than the G7 but I do think that can be managed using an undervolt and even restricting the max boost clock. What I do like about the one I reviewed is that at $750 you can afford to put in an ssd and still have a very good value gaming laptop at a good price. If I kept this that is what I would have done.
