I'm on a optiplex 5050 sff right now and want to upgrade a better one that supports re-sizeable bar so I can get an intel arc gpu to use with it, you're right - they are super reliable, you can get them refurbished for cheap

Be careful with the ARC since none of the new SFF OptiPlex has the extra power cable for the GPU. If the ARC has a 6 pin or 8 pin power connector but no cable connected, it will not boot :(

@@Scott.The.IT.Guy. thanks for the reply, I think the sff arc GPU doesn't require a power connection from the PSU it pulls from the pcie

@@Wild_Cat This does not :ASRock Intel Arc A380 Low Profile 6GB GDDR6 but I think any other higher model does need a power cable.

Scott, great video! Now let’s pop a low profile single slot GPU in that beast and let’s see what it can do! RX 6400xt would be a good start.

@Scott.The.IT.Guy. 16 күн бұрын
According to the Intel tuning software, this CPU only gets 85w from the motherboard. The 12900k by default needs a 125w but with the turbo boost this spikes up to 240W. The 6400xt peaks at 280W at gaming and we have a 180w power supply with no power cord for the GPU. The largest PSU Dell offers is a 300W PSU also without the 6 pin/8 pin cable. Right now the 12900k only delivers about 60% of its performance in a multi core environment:(

I really enjoy the sff form factor optiplex's due to their reliability. I am always happy when creators are somewhat blund about it not being customizable with a limited upgrade path. Too many videos of people try to make these budget gaming PCs which they just don't really work great for

I think it would be good to inform people that these Dells aren't automatically compatible with every make and model of RAM that seems to match spec. You really have to verify the RAM module's compatibility with the OptiPlex before purchasing, else it may be a crap shoot if it will work. I've been burned a few times before with this.

Correct! Remember when the specs were all correct for the optiplex SFF, but the replacement ram was about 1/8 higher compared to the original? We could not close the top cover :)

You mentioned that it's not a gaming PC, but it is set up perfectly for an A380 or RX 6400, and that would theoretically enable a user to play eSports and some AAA games.

no, get a 3050 lp or if you want to mess around with adapters get a 4060 lp

We have a 180W PSU here which has no power cable for the GPU. Also, this i9 is completely crippled already since the Mobo is only passing 85W to it, but by default the 12900k needs 125W not mentioning when the turbo kicks in and the power consumption goes up to 240W temporally. We dont have a lot of option, as mentioned by unstopable_rob: 3050 LP,GTX 1650 LP, low model Intel Arc, 4060 LP or the A2000 but the last two are expensive and we still need a Dell 300W PSU which also dont come with the power cable :( :( :(

Lol! It kind of did. I wonder if a 300W PSU would yield a better result or just the basic MoBo has its limitations. I have the 2024 OptiPlex 7020 with the 14 Gen i5, also have the i9-14900K. I am about to order a 300W PSU for that so we can find out for sure.

I am a data manager at a distribution company i work with massive excel sheets with all out items (800k skus/ lines in excel) running wild formulas. I just bought an optiplex 7020 small form factor plus i9 64GB ram, didn’t set it up yet. I’m just wondering if should exchange it for the full tower with 500w power supply and possibly better thermals, or not such a difference and should worry??

Hey, I do have a 7020 optiplex with the i9-14900k cpu as well but haven’t had a chance to run benchmarks on it. I am sure that a full tower pc would perform significantly better. The size of the cooler and the size of the power supply is just not enough here . If you watch my Dell XPS 8960 video , even there with the i9-14900k we are leaving about 10-20% performance on the table. I would go with the optiplex full size tower or even with the XPS 8960. XPS can also last 10 years no problem.

Thanks for your quick reply! Just want to clarify some things and wondering if your opinion still stays the same. I got the 14900 not the 14900k. I got it with the 280W power supply. I’m just wondering why dell would offer an i9 In a form factor that would throttle its performance… another thing is i realize i got the "class 35" ssd. will class 40 be a big upgrade since twice read/ write? or both so fast will be marginal...

Dell will sell you anyting as an option but it does not mean that we can`t do better with a different model, In this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnelqJ-tiLWqr5I Pancake style cooler is what we have inside the 7020 SFF with a piece of plastic funnel on the top. In this video you can see at 5:10 that just going with a larger cooler from Dell we are gaining somewhere between 2-15% performance with the same exact CPU. In our case it does not matter if it’s a K or non-K CPU since we cannot overclock the system anyway (if you watch the full video). Yes, we can but it did not result in any performance gain, even the largest Dell cooler is already maxed out, and again, with a custom PC without overclocking, just with a larger cooler will perform about 20% better than this XPS will ever do. Also forgot to mention the speed of the SSD is probably critical for you since you are working with large files, even with a lot of ram, swapping on the SSD will happen no matter what. The SSD in the XPS is about twice as fast as the OptiPlex, unless you are putting a new SSD in this OptiPlex. The 14900 non-K with the turbo boost can draw and would draw 219 W from the PSU, which means you have 60W left for the Mobo, ram, SSD, extra VGA if you have any of that. This will not happen because your system will be throttled before that. Maybe this is already great for what you will do and not an issue. I am just saying a bigger case with a better cooler a 500W+ PSU and a faster SSD is a better option with the XPS and probably also much cheaper as well.
