You should get two 4 gb sticks so you can run in dual channel, dual channel always runs faster

Yea I did a build similar to this on my channel except I used the GTX 750 ti for those that can't afford a GTX 1050. It did surprisingly well even on Mass Effect Andromeda and Doom, definitely worth doing if you have an older Dell optiplex or a tight budget.

I have the exact same computer (790 MT) and recently installed a GT 1030 video card (nvidia). It only draws 30 watts from the PSU and the computer supports it, but weirdly, whenever I boot it up, it skips the bios and only outputs video at windows login. Even when I press F2 for setup, it just hangs at black screen. It seems the GPU only communicates with the computer until I enter windows. Does this happen to you? (just wanna see, as I think I will buy a new monitor to see if the issue is fixed).

The 1050 ti is blocking access to the expansion PCI E slot. That really sucks because I bought this PC and GPU for VR gaming and without the Interface card I wont be able to LINK with my Oculus Quest 2. This sucks :-(. Thanks for the video.

Ok so I recieved your ram today. I first want to say that I have purchased 16gb ram from 2 other sellers that both said the ram is compatible with a dell optiplex 790. When I installed the ram I purchased from both of those sellers they didn't work so I found yours and have the same results. I'm sure at this point that the issue is not the ram I'm buying. Do you know if there something specific that I need to do to make this ram work because I cannot figure it out. My specific model supports up to (16 gigs) 4 gigs in each dimm slot. I get the 1-3-2 error beeps that indicate it does not detect ram. When I put the original 8gb back into the system it turns on fine. What am I missing here?

Good video and I like your idea of using a common but still powerful Dell as a baseline for modding. My only concern is that NVIDIA's website states that the 1050 TI needs a 300 Watt power supply: www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/geforce-gtx-1050/ However Dell's website says that the power supply for the Optiplex 790 MT is only 265 Watts: i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/optiplex-790-customer-brochure.pdf Have you encountered any problems when stress testing the 1050 Ti?

Dylan Robinson Thx but it isn't my idea :P. So what I've gathered from folks across the net, the stock power supply is indeed enough to power the 1050 ti. It only uses 75w.

Good to hear. However have you ever pushed the card to it's limits? Only in that fashion will you be pushing its power limits. I'm being picky because I'm looking to do the same upgrade and I worried about having to upgrade the power supply based on looking at the specs from the manufacturers.

You can't put a Xeon processor in a normal PC like this because first of the processor is too large second of a dell optiplex 790 mother board only supports one type of processor socket the LGA 1155

Yeah I've herd there have been issues with newer AMD cards and older PC's like this. Only thing I don't like about this PC is the SATA ports and HDD Drive bay are in the way for bigger cards. makes your GPU selection very limited.

Oh I know it works I've turned a bunch of these Optiplexes into gaming PC's and even used a 1050 TI a few times. I'm about to do another one with a I7 2600 and a GTX 1060. Its to bad that they stopped making the 1155 socket boards though. I use to be able to get some nice MSI ones for $50-$60 and move all the parts into a bigger case. Now the boards are hard to find and even used they aren't cheap.

My 790MT has been running an i7 2600 @3.4Ghz on the OEM PSU without a single hiccup. Am very tempted to put a beefier PSU in there and bump up to the 1050 Ti or Titan X video card for running Daz3d better (currently only running a GTX 610...don't laugh...) but have been concerned about that 35W "limit" on the x16 PCIe slot.

I know its an old comment make sure you install drivers for the right OS when I got my 790 I made the mistake of accidentally installing a 32 bit windows 7 one instead of the 64 bit if you need to check that go to the bottom left windows symbol and type dxdiag and that will tell you what os you have

Yesh the non slim version of the cards will fit into this case. I just ordered another one (Dell 790) a day or so ago.

Hm the bottom slot? It can only be installed on the blue pcie slot. U would have to remove 2 brackets.

Just runnin' with the stock psu. It'll power the card just fine (I've learned) as it uses only 75 watts.

don get the core 2 uad version get one with an i5 2400 and once the not too sure about the 960 tho does it need a 6 pin connector to run if nott then you're good to go but do some research before you do anything at all
