So.... after months of work, it's finally here. What did you think? Do you know think there's more than a marginal difference between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen CPU's? Or do you think I still got it wrong?
@tigerhead854 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the effort and work put in. Very useful for budget gamers like myself to make the best price-to-performance decisions. While there's a marginal difference for 3rd and 4th gen in the US, there's a massive increase in price (like $30-40 USD difference for 3rd and 4th gen) in my country. So in my case, it's worth settling on 3rd gen i7 instead of paying a premium for a marginal increase if I go for a 4th gen.

Finally! I love these budget optiplex videos. They just have so much more creativity than buying high end items and mashing them together. I would like to see your opinions on some competition to the optiplex 3020 7020 and 9020 like maybe other optiplexes or hp z200s would be good but the pros and cons as well as like a summary of why you still prefer or would recommend them as alternatives compared to the 3020 7020 and 9020. Additionally you could talk about some of the issues associated with upgrading these optiplexes like when switching to a more modern case there are many issues created like errors and dells unique connectors creating issues with front panel ports. I have found workarounds for those but maybe you would find a better solution than me.

What you are doing is really useful. I'm not part of the Optiplex community. I run an HP Z420 with a Xeon E5-1650 which I now find out from this video is considered desktop gen 3 because it's Ivy Bridge-EP. I'm currently running an RX580 8GB and the takeway I got from this is that probably the best GPU for my machine right now is a GTX 1070ti. Yes, it will happily run a 1080ti but from a budget consideration the 1070ti makes more sense because they're going for around $270 on eBay right now. Thank you for your meticulous effort. It's really appreciated.

Thanks! I really want to pickup a Z series workstation to mess around with since the xx40 series OptiPlex's aren't worth the time. Once I exhaust the OptiPlex, I feel like the Z series is the way to go with the 6th gen CPU's. The 1070 Ti would right at home that 6/12 thread Xeon. I'd say anything between the 1070 and 1080 is a good bet, and for $270 the 1070 Ti is a good deal.
@PaulLemars014 жыл бұрын
@@TheGameBench This is a question that weighs on my buying decision and maybe it's the basis of a new video? What effect does running a GPU that's PCIX v4 (like an RTX2060 or an RX5700) in a machine that's PCIX v3 or even PCIX v2. How much of a real world hit does the slot generation have on the performance of the card. If you tested an RTX2060 vs a GTX1060 in a gen 3 motherboard and then a gen 4 motherboard how much of a real world jump in performance would the RTX2060 really have. Another question is what effect on actual real world performance does single channel memory vs dual channel vs quad channel memory have? Finally, most OEM motherboards don't support overclocking but Intel produces the 'Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (IETU)' for certain Intel CPUs that seem to give you de-facto overclocking regardless. The only reason I know about this is that my machine came with a Xeon E5-1650v2 that has a base clock of 3.5Ghz but I have modified it via the IETU to run all 6 cores at 4.2GHz (it's currently ticking over at 3.76Ghz). Cinebench seems to show a significant improvement but could you test this? I'm just poking around in the dark myself. BTW HP Z420 V2 machines are going for around $200 if you look carefully.

Wow! Great analysis! Have a sub! Came here from Hoosier hardware and glad I did! I would have done a smaller matrix eg budget GPU, mid range and top range. But this encourages me to have my first gen xeons and 2nd gen i7s. As consoles use very low speed 8 cores so hopefully engines will keep using more cores. But yeah.. i5s looking worse than old i7s! GREAT Video!!! Thank you for this video as I am always touting the use of Dell's upgrading to actual PC gaming use and Streaming PC's. I have refurbed 2 Dell's for the use in game streaming and they are working brilliantly!! My point is you really don't need a $2000 PC to game and stream. Those PC's are great if you have the cash for the PC Master Race but in real time usage....NOPE!!! Keep the great refurb video's coming!! I really liked the part when you said to shutoff "Blur" and "Film Grain"...good point!! Thank you

awesome video bro,at about half way through all i could think was ...man this must have took a long time to put together lol,i want to buy a second 9020 just to play around with,and with having two i could easily test parts from one to the other but prices have skyrocketed lately (we all know why). i paid $120 for mine with 16 gigs ,now the best deal ive found was $150 but only with 8 gigs of ram
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
I don't know... I still see deals on them. But yeah, at $150, you could possibly score an i7 system for $50 more, or so.

Awesome work man. I have a Dell precision t1700 with a Xeon e3 1246 v3 (effectively a i7 4770) paired with an RX 480 8gb. I know you dig the Optiplex line, but you should consider looking into the precision models. The price difference from core i to Xeon can be quite amazing while the performance is pretty much the same across the board.

I've actually been keeping my eye out for one. The other upside is that there are models that came with a 365 watt PSU with a 6-pin PCIe connector too.

Great video, tons of work put in, respect! Now, I am not an optiplex person but I like my old Intels in 2020. Here comes the question: The rigs are: 1. i7 4790k@ 4.6GHz, gtx 1080, 32 Gb 1866 ram, 4k 60 Hz screen, game played is excellently optimised World of Tanks (WOT) 2. i7 3770K @ 4.6GHz, gtx 1070, 16Gb 2133 ram, 1080p 60 Hz screen, all new(ish) titles played 3. i5 4570, rx 470 4gb, 8Gb 1866 ram, 1080p 60 Hz screen, mixed playable games 4. i5 2500, gtx 770 2Gb, 8Gb 1600 ram @ 1333 probably, 900p screen (TV), game played is WOT And I really want a 1080Ti strix in rig 1 (4790k) just to make it complete. Do I then trickle the cards down and dispose of the gtx770? Or is it not worth it? Mind you the 1080 already maxes out WOT, the only game I play personally, at 4k all day long.
@TheGameBench4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the 1080 Ti just seems like diminishing returns on the 4th gen to me. I just don't feel like you're getting $150+ more performance over the 1080. It could, the CPU just needs a little more horsepower and some faster RAM. With DDR3, there's not much to be gained past 1600MHz, but it's something I'd like to test. They all sound like pretty balanced setups.

Thanks for the video, I'm not too much of a tech guy and I did find it interesting, though some of it just went over my head. Recently I had to purchase a new PC for working at home, and now I'm starting to enjoy PC gaming. Never been much of a gamer before. I purchased the following a Dell OptiPlex 9020: Report Date: Saturday, October 24, 2020 Report Time [hh:mm:ss]: 7:24:21 PM Driver Version: 20.19.15.4835 Operating System: Windows* 10 Pro (10.0.18362) Default Language: English (United States) Physical Memory: 32676 MB Vendor ID: 8086 Device ID: 0412 Device Revision: 06 Video BIOS: 1025.14 Current Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz Processor Speed: 3592 MHz Processor Graphics in Use: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 Shader Version: 5.0 OpenGL* Version: 4.3 OpenCL* Version: 1.2 * Microsoft DirectX* * Runtime Version: 12.0 Hardware-Supported Version: 11.1 and based on your previous video I have purchased the "EVGA GeForce GTX 1650 SC Ultra Gaming GDDR6, 04G-P4-1257-KR, 4GB GDDR6, Dual Fan, Metal Backplate". This should be arriving today. Outside of upgrading the stock PSU is there anything else I should do? Any thoughts? As for gaming I just play Elite Dangerous for now, probably wont do much more than that.
