The two week notice is so 1970s. I never give one until I see them providing one.

My personal example with Dell: For the last four years I have been watching them try to staff a specialized team in a new business unit. I have been getting contacted by recruiters for years on this. At the begining I heard what they wanted and I told the recruiter it was never going to happen for Dell in that city with the surrounding companies and basically competition based on what was on offer. It took three years until they got to the place where they would staff the team contract and remote. Then they switched gears again, no remote contractors. Meanwhile I have been watching this slowly unfold for four years... My understanding is they are still struggling to find people for that same unit/team but they won't do what it takes. I could go on and it actually gets sillier but you get the gist. Better to hire or contract the right people regardless of location rather than waste years trying to force something to happen without being willing to offer pay that is competitive.

Thanks so much for sharing your personal experience. Completely agree with your conclusion, and I see it reflected in many companies that struggle to embrace outcomes over work location.

Companies do nothing. Dell is not a live being. People at Dell instituted the policy and the ultimatum. That mindset can change as quickly as those people changing. The mass application of distributed work is an opportunity for organizations to redefine how they work. Clearly, there is a vast number of people willing to participate in that opportunity. The only reason to mandate in-office when it is unnecessary is fear and a lack of creativity.

It is a smart way to reduce number of employees without paying compensation

Not quite. Not only will they ultimately pay in overall performance, but most people took the deal. That’s what makes it hilarious. Dell’s stuck now.

Treat people like adults and they will behave like adults.
